Review Overview

Josie Maran is spring boarding off the success of her Argan Infinity Intensive Creamy Oil skincare product with this color version, and the results are mixed. Argan Infinity Lip and Cheek Creamy Oil is meant to be a multitasking product for use on cheeks and lips; as it turns out it's good for one, but not so much for the other. Ultimately, this is a good emollient cream blush for those with normal to dry skin, not one we would suggest for the oily or acne prone. It does contain a small amount of fragrance and thus, isn't recommended for those with sensitivity concerns.

Packaged in a color-coded aluminum squeeze tube with a screw top, the consistency of the product is creamy, with a bit of oiliness that's true to its "Creamy Oil" name. The colors are pretty, and sheer enough that you can start with just a wash of color and build easily for a more dramatic look.

On cheeks, this creates a healthy flush effect that lasts several hours. We don't recommend it for those whose skin is oily or acne-prone, though, as it is too moisturizing, which can make oily skin oilier while potentially worsening clogged pores and breakouts due to the amount of beeswax it contains.

As a lip product, this provides strong color with a glossy finish that's attractive. Unlike results when applied to cheeks, this lasts a short amount of time on lips (about an hour without eating), so you'll have to reapply this frequently all day long to keep the color strong. Despite the number of oils it contains, this doesn't moisturize lips all that well because it doesn't cling well to lips. A bit of a disappointment there, as we had high hopes for its performance as a lip color.

Argan Infinity Lip and Cheek Creamy Oil contains a small amount of two citrus oils (sweet orange and tangerine) that pose a risk of irritation. We suspect the amounts are low enough to not be a big problem but even so they should be in there at all, as they don't have skincare benefit. Either way, this isn't a makeup product someone with extra-sensitive skin should consider. Overall, this adds up to mixed results that make it an option for cheeks alone, and for those with normal to dry skin who aren't dealing with sensitivity concerns. Check out Josie Maran's Cheek Gelee for a similar and much better product in the same line that works well for most skin types, including the oily or acne prone.

Pros:
  • Good selection of colors.
  • Sheer coverage that's easily buildable for a natural-looking flush.
  • Lasts several hours on cheeks.
Cons:
  • Color only lasts about an hour on lips without eating.
  • Isn't moisturizing as a lip product.
  • The fragrant citrus oils pose a slight risk of irritation.

Brand Overview

Josie Maran At-A-Glance

Strengths: The sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection; well-formulated daytime moisturizer with sunscreen; excellent tinted moisturizer for dry skin; uniquely effective gel blush.

Weaknesses: Expensive; some products are potently fragranced.

The Josie Maran brand was founded by supermodel and former Maybelline spokesperson Josie Maran. Almost every Josie Maran product is centered on the ingredient argan oil, which the brand attributes many beneficial qualities—some of which are true, and some claims made stretch the facts a bit. According to the brand, this non-fragrant plant oil is said to do everything from reduce wrinkles to heal acne, while giving you younger-looking skin.

Argan oil does contain beneficial lipids and fatty acids for skin, as well as vitamin E and other antioxidants—but we should note that it isn't the only oil with such properties. Even more to the point, no single ingredient does it all for skin. It's just like your diet: if you eat only one type of food, you'd soon be malnourished. Skin is the body's largest organ, and it requires a variety of useful ingredients to look and function at its best.

Fortunately, the Josie Maran brand does include many beneficial ingredient’s in some of its best products, and does have some unique offerings to consider. It's worth pointing out also that although argan oil does have benefit for skin, it’s less beneficial to include it in products like eyeshadow and mascara. It does add a unique quality to some makeup, however, especially in a few of the brands lip formulas.

We should note that while the brand relies heavily on the natural theme in its marketing—and there isn’t anything wrong with that—it doesn’t talk about the beneficial ingredients used that aren’t so natural. There isn’t anything wrong with using naturally-derived ingredients, but it strikes us as disingenuous to not tout the benefits of synthetic ingredients such as silicones, preservatives, coloring agents and film formers that also appear in many of Josie Maran products.

As is the case with many brands that use predominantly natural ingredients, there are some fragrant oils to be wary of, as these can be problematic for any skin type (but especially so for those with sensitivity concerns). However, there are a few products here that are absolutely worth considering and unique—see our individual reviews on the brand for more details.
