Review Overview

Finding a complementary range of true matte eyeshadows isn't an easy task, but this palette nails it! These 12 pressed-powder eyeshadows come in a range of neutral, universally flattering shades that run the gamut from soft ivory to rich brown and smokey black, offering the versatility to take your look from day to night.

All but one of the shades have a true matte finish (good news if you have wrinkly or crepey eyelids) that enhances the eye design rather than looking dull, muddy, or flat. The sole shimmer shade comes in a soft shell pink color that's ideal for highlighting the brow bone or accentuating the inner corner of the eyes.

These buttery smooth shadows glide on without dragging or flaking and blend easily for a wide variety of looks. The long-wearing formula maintains color intensity with minimal to no signs of fading at the end of the day, and the darker shades double as powder eyeliners (or may be used to fill in brows!).

Every shade can be applied wet for more intensity or used dry for a softer, but still pigmented, look.

Pros:
  • Fragrance-free formula has a buttery-smooth texture that blends easily.
  • Versatile, flattering range of colors, 11 of which offer a true matte finish.
  • The darker shades double as powder eyeliner or for filling in brows.
  • Long-wearing formula resists flaking and fading.
Cons:
  • None.

Disclosure: Paula Begoun is creator of Beautypedia and founder of Paula's Choice Skincare products. Reviewing thousands of skincare and makeup products over the past 30 years, both on this site and in her best-selling books, Paula's mission has always been to help consumers find the best products possible for their skin. The Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains this commitment. In addition, The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same rating standards and criteria, whether it is a Paula's Choice product or another brand.

Paula's Choice Skincare was established in 1995 when best-selling beauty author and consumer advocate Paula Begoun (known as The Cosmetics Cop) decided to develop her own products. Like most of us, she was fed up with products that overpromised results, cost a lot of money, and failed to deliver—or made matters worse!

As a natural evolution of Paula's personal mission to help consumers find the best products for their skin, the line has grown into an extensive range of skincare and makeup products that are formulated to meet the needs of almost every skin type and skin concern imaginable. From acne to wrinkles, oily skin, rosacea, large pores, eczema, redness, sagging, dry skin, and on and on, Paula's Choice offers a solution.

Paula's Choice Skincare stands apart from other cosmetics brands. The formulas contain only ingredients that have substantiated, published research showing they are beneficial and effective—so you get visible results. Stable packaging is another feature of the brand, using innovative, opaque, and air-tight or air-restrictive components that keep antioxidants and other light- and air-sensitive ingredients from breaking down (unlike jar packaging, which compromises what might otherwise be an effective formula). The line is also 100% fragrance-free, which is best for all skin types, especially for those with sensitive skin or rosacea.

From cleansers to broad-spectrum sunscreens to anti-aging serums to specialized treatments, Paula's Choice Skincare has you covered from head to toe with innovative, state-of-the-art products. The brand also offers professional-quality makeup products including concealer, foundation, eyeshadow, lipstick, and more. (Paula started out as a makeup artist so she definitely knows her way around a face!)

Paula's Choice Skincare does not test on animals and also takes an environmentally friendly approach by featuring minimalist, recyclable packaging. Another plus—the Customer Service team is among the best in the industry, offering a "100% satisfaction or your money back" guarantee.

Why are all Paula's Choice Skincare products rated highly? The Paula's Choice Skincare Team would not launch a product unless it was worthy of a high rating from The Beautypedia Team. Paula and The Beautypedia Team were researching and reviewing products long before Paula's Choice Skincare ever existed and consumers were constantly requesting a skincare brand that met all of Beautypedia's criteria. As a result, The Paula's Choice Skincare Team was created and uses the same research and criteria to formulate Paula's Choice products as The Beautypedia Team uses to review products.

About the Experts

The Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains the commitment that Paula Begoun, founder of Beautypedia and Paula's Choice Skincare made over 30 years ago-to help you find the best products possible for your skin. We do this by relentlessly pursuing and relying on published scientific research so you will have unbiased information on what works and what doesn't-and the sneaky ways you could be making your skin worse, not better!

The Beautypedia Team reviews all products using the same research, criteria, and objectivity, whether the product being reviewed is from Paula's Choice or another brand.

Won't use all colors; too bulky to travel with

At 60 -- I'm probably not adventurous enough but find I only use 2 of these shadows. (Maybe they should include a booklet of possible combinations?) Love the grey, which I use both wet and dry. But I'd rather have the option of buying them individually, or in 2-shadow sets. Ideally -- pick your own combination! (Now THAT would be innovative.) It's cheap enough that I MIGHT replace just to get the 2 shadows, but biggest downfall is that it is too bulky to travel with.

awesome sauce

these eye shadows are great for a nude daytime look. They are extremely pigmented and if you dig into them they will seem chalky. If you just tap your brush into the shadows and pat them on the eye they work beautifully.I got this as gift with purchase and I don't think I would have bought it otherwise. On my monitor shadows seemed extremely warmed toned. Considering that I have very pale neutral to cool toned skin I thought these wouldn't work but they really blend and mesh with my skin.

Simply the Best!

I had been searching unsuccessfully to find a palette such as this. There is truly nothing else on the market like these shadows. Matte shadows are notoriously hard to blend, but these are a dream. I'm even able to use colors that normally I wouldn't use because they blend so seamlessly. I can use every shade except maybe for the black color. I'm very fair and blonde, and the black is just too harsh for the look I want to achieve. Please keep these in your product lineup.

Wonderful stuff!

I used to use Paula's eyeshadow all the time. The shades were perfect and so natural that people used to ask me if I was wearing makeup! Since she discontinued them, I have bought I don't know how many shadows and shadow palettes -- all of them costing more than this -- and most of them leaving a lot to be desired. Recently, I bought some $60 Armani shadows that were comparable, but with only four shadows to a compact and all monochromatic. Thanks, Paula! Finally!

Best palette ever!

I've been a loyal user of Urban Decay's Naked palettes. Although I like them, this palette is far superior. The colors are gorgeous (much better on) and buttery, they stay put all day, blend well, and can be used as eyeliner, eyebrow filler, and eyeshadow. Having one shimmery shade is a plus as well. I have been able to create many beautiful looks. Great value!

Best!

Just tried this palette for the first time this morning. Colors are beautiful and went on nicely. I used the darkest color as a liner and it appears to be long lasting...no smearing or smudging, So happy to see Paula come out with some color cosmetics.
