This body lotion (which, like any body lotion, can also be used on the hands…after all, hands are part of the body, too!) contains some very good ingredients to smooth and replenish all skin types, especially dry, but it's also loaded with fragrant ingredients that make this a problem and a product we absolutely do not recommend.

Chief among the troublemaking ingredients are lavender and lime oils. The lavender oil is discussed in the More Info section below (it smells great, but what makes your nose happy isn't always going to do the same for your skin). Lime oil is irritating and also capable of causing a phototoxic reaction when skin is exposed to sunlight, which can result in discolorations (Source: www.naturaldatabase.com).

This body moisturizer also contains other fragrant ingredients which pose further risk of irritation. Without all of the problematic fragrant ingredients, this would be worth checking out, especially because of its attractive price and generous size. See our list of Best Body Lotions for our top picks that omit the fragrant irritants.

Pros:
  • Surprisingly inexpensive.
  • Very good emollient ingredients for dry skin.
  • Packaged to keep light- and air-sensitive ingredients stable.
Cons:
  • Contains a high amount of irritating fragrant oils, including prime offenders lavender and lime.
  • Highly fragrant formula, but fragrance isn't skin care (if you want the spa experience at home, light a scented candle instead).
More Info:

Research indicates that components of lavender, specifically linalool, can be cytotoxic, which means that topical application causes skin-cell death (Source: Cell Proliferation, June 2004, pages 221–229). Lavender leaves contain camphor, which is a known skin irritant. Because the fragrance constituents in lavender oil oxidize when exposed to air, lavender oil is a pro-oxidant, and this enhanced oxidation increases its irritancy on skin (Source: Contact Dermatitis, September 2008, pages 143–150). Lavender oil is the most potent form, and even small amounts of it (0.25% or less) are problematic. Although it's fine as an aromatherapy agent for inhalation or relaxation, it is a must to avoid in skin-care products. (Sources: Psychiatry Research, February 2007, pages 89–96; and www.naturaldatabase.com).

Sunflower and lemon, with lavender and oat-derived beta glucan, make this hand & body lotion a gentle, powerful foe of dry skin. It will leave you skin feeling smooth & silky, refreshed and rejuvenated- just like a day at the spa.

California-based specialty grocer chain Trader Joe's isn't the first place you may think of when shopping for skin care, and rightly so: the bulk of this store's inventory is, not surprisingly, foods and beverages. However, they've recently ventured into sun care and offer a couple of worthwhile, inexpensive sunscreens as well as a remarkable facial cleanser. The sunscreens from TJ's we recommend aren't knock-your-socks-off spectacular, but are quite the beauty bargain. If you have a Trader Joe's in your neighborhood, some of the sunscreens are definitely worth a look, especially if you have a family to cover from head to toe during summer months when more of us are outdoors for long periods of time.
