This is a good daytime moisturizer with sunscreen for normal to oily skin, but it doesn't contain anything to "renew" skin's barrier other than the sun protection it offers, and between the synthetic active sunscreen ingredients and fragrance ingredient farnesol, it's misleading to claim this is calming; those ingredients may aggravate, not calm, sensitive skin.

Broad-spectrum protection is supplied and avobenzone is on hand for critical UVA (think anti-aging) screening, though we're concerned about the second inactive ingredient, methylpropanediol. This ingredient is a penetration enhancer, and while that can be great for certain formulas, having this much of it in a product that contains sunscreen actives isn't the wisest formulary move for a product that's supposed to calm sensitive skin.

Of course, not everyone will have a problem with the combination mentioned above but we wanted to point it out, if for no other reason than it's a strange formulary choice.

Otherwise, this earns high marks for its mix of antioxidants, including the cell-communicating ingredient retinol. The "Active Repairing Complex" is no doubt made up of these ingredients plus some of the moisturizing agents this contains. The price is more than fair, too.

Pros:
  • Provides broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Lightweight lotion texture hydrates without feeling thick.
  • Contains a good mix of antioxidants (including retinol).
Cons:
  • Contains fragrant ingredient farnesol, which can pose a risk of irritation.
  • The formula isn't ideal for calming or soothing sensitive skin.

Lightweight cream improves skin comfort and calms. Active Repair Complex helps to enhance the skin barrier function to increase moisture, decrease the appearance of wrinkles and improve skin clarity.

Active Ingredients: Avobenzone 2.0%, Homosalate 8.0%, Octinoxate 5.0%, Octisalate 3.5%, Oxybenzone 4.0%. Inactive Ingredients: Water, Methylpropanediol, VP/Eicosene Copolymer, Arabidopsis Thaliana Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Cake, Hordeum Vulgare (Barley) Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Glycerin, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Tocopherol, Retinol, Polysorbate 20, Pentylene Glycol, Lecithin, Bisabolol, Farnesol, Sorbitan Isostearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Isostearic Acid, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Propylene Glycol Dicaprate, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol.

Since Ulta was founded in 1990, the company has continued to carve out a unique position as a specialty beauty store by offering a large selection of upscale and drugstore cosmetics in all price ranges, all under one roof. There are currently over 675 Ulta locations across the United States, and, like Sephora, Ulta sells its own product line right alongside more familiar brands such as Revlon, Murad, and philosophy.

The Ulta Collection offers a variety of basic makeup products, from foundation to eye shadow to lip gloss. Nearly all items in the Ulta Collection are inexpensive, and its lower price point is a major draw.

As with most cosmetics lines, Ulta has its share of good and bad products; however, it seems for every good to great makeup product the line has two average-to-poor options. Testers may or may not be available, so choose wisely.

Among the safer categories of Ulta makeup are the eyeshadows, many of the mascaras, brow products, and most of the foundations, particularly the cream-to-powder and powder formulas.

Despite our enthusiasm for Ulta's large selection of eyeshadow, the quality is inconsistent, especially when it comes to texture and how they apply, even among different shades in the same category. The best way to shop this line is to pay attention to which products we've reviewed favorably and to take extra time to play with the products in-store (assuming the Ulta you frequent keeps testers available).

In recent years, Ulta has branched out from makeup to skin care. Their namesake skin care has the same affordable price point as the makeup, and some of the products are actually quite good. Skip the cleansers, ignore the moisturizers in jar packaging, and forget about the pore-tightening products...the rest is worth exploring, but again, this is not a brand to shop without some knowledge of what you're buying and how it performs.
