This rose-scented primer (the rose scent comes from the fragrance ingredient phenethyl alcohol) has a silky texture that makes an ideal "priming" base to enable a smooth application of foundation. You don't need to use a primer in order to get your makeup on better or have it last longer (a well-formulated serum or non-greasy daytime moisturizer with sunscreen can work just as well) but if you choose to use one, this is worth a look.

Although broad-spectrum sun protection is provided, we're concerned that if you rely on this as your sole source of sun protection you may not apply enough. Sunscreen needs to be applied liberally to get the stated level of protection, but slathering this primer on can make skin feel too slippery, which can interfere with rather than enhance makeup application. So, we're recommending this primer with sunscreen as an adjunct to another SPF-rated product in your routine, perhaps your foundation with SPF 15.

Other than the sunscreen, the only other notable ingredients this primer contains are two peptides, but their presence in this formula is minor and unlikely to provide much anti-aging benefit—though to the company's credit, Victoria's Secret isn't making such claims.

VS Pro Airbrush FX Oil-Free Primer SPF 14 (we surmise that for whatever reason the formula just didn't make it to the benchmark SPF 15 minimum) is best for normal to oily skin; it's fragrant ingredient and mix of sunscreen actives make it an iffy choice for those with sensitive skin.

Pros:
  • Silky, lightweight texture leaves skin prepped for makeup.
  • Provides broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Creates a smooth, airbrushed-like finish on skin.
Cons:
  • Shouldn't be relied on as your sole source of sun protection (both due to the SPF 14 rating and the unlikely chance you'll apply this liberally).
  • Contains a rose-scented alcohol that can pose a risk of irritation, especially when applied near the eyes.

The weightless, oil-free formula creates an exceptionally smooth, velvety surface, and ensures a flawless foundation application.

Active: Avobenzone 1%, Octisalate 2%, Octocrylene 2%, Oxybenzone 2% Inactive Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Water (Aqua, Eau), Dimethicone Crosspolymer, HDI/PPG/Polycaprolactone Crosspolymer, Idododecane, Stearyl Dimethicone, Cetyl Dimethicone, Cetyl Dimethicone Copolyol, Dimethicone, Phenethyl Alcohol, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Hexyl Laurate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Glycerin, Propylene Carbonate, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Stearate, Silica, Disodium EDTA, Carbomer, Polysorbate 20, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7.

Victoria's Secret makeup clearly tries to play up the same sleek, coy sexuality the rest of the Victoria's Secret merchandise is known for. And what could be a better environment for offering makeup! Victoria's Secret stores are all about a woman feeling sexy and beautiful, head to toe. If you're donning a silky teddy or lacy corset, the complete look almost begs for full, glossed, pouty lips and softly blushed cheeks, and this cosmetics line supplies that, albeit with shine and glitter to spare.

In the fall of 2006, the former Victoria's Secret makeup line blossomed with a whole new look and more enticing branding. Dubbed Very Sexy Makeup (to complement the company's popular fragrance of the same name), the line benefited from a streamlined product selection, while the packaging was updated from polished silver to lacquered black with metallic fuchsia stripes. The image update is sleek and mostly impressive, and kudos are due for to the well-designed tester units, which allow customers to experiment with every shade and offer plenty of tissues, cotton balls, mirrors, and makeup remover. Although I could argue that it doesn't take loads of shimmer and glitter to create very sexy makeup, I'll keep my comments focused on the products themselves, a surprising number of which are quite good and moderately priced.

Items worth checking out include the Liquid eyeliner, Face Illuminator and the impressive Long Wear Lip Shine. The lack of foundation options and a disregard for sufficient UVA protection in every product sporting an SPF rating is disappointing. If you happen to be visiting Victoria's Secret for their annual bra sale you might want to check out some of their makeup items just for the fun of it.
