Used as a propellant in cosmetic products; as nitric oxide, it can generate free-radical damage and cause cell death (Source: Mechanisms of Ageing and Development, April 2002, pages 1007–1019). Topically applied nitrogen in the amounts present in skin-care products has minimal research (and no third-party, substantiated research) establishing its benefit for skin, but it does not appear to be harmful in its pure form.
