Review Overview
Differin contains the retinoid adapalene as its active ingredient. It is available in cream, lotion, or gel forms at a strength of 0.1%. A 0.3% strength is available in cream or gel form. Which strength and texture to choose is best determined by consulting your dermatologist and taking your personal preferences into account. As an example of costs, a 45-gram tube of Differin cream costs $132.93; the same size of alcohol-free gel costs $117.28. It is owned by Galderma, the company behind the Cetaphil brand. Adapalene can be used at the same time as benzoyl peroxide, which is something that cannot be said for tretinoin (the active ingredient in all forms of Retin-A). Brand Overview

RETINOIDS AT-A-GLANCE

Strengths: The active ingredient in most retinoids is tretinoin, which has mounds of research establishing its multiple anti-aging benefits for skin (particularly sun-damaged skin). Tazorac contains the active ingredient tazarotene, a retinoid that works similarly to tretinoin.

Weaknesses: Some people cannot tolerate tretinoin therapy; all of these products require a prescription; textures of each are not nearly as elegant as using a well-formulated moisturizer.

Rather than review these products and assign the usual face ratings, we present a list of the various options, along with prices based on figures from www.drugstore.com. Note that your actual price for these prescription products will vary based on your health insurance coverage, if any, and whether or not your physician believes that a generic form of tretinoin is an equally effective (and hence less costly) option.

Caused redness, irritation

Clearly others have had great results with this, but not me. It was far too drying and irritating for my skin, and caused a lot of redness. I couldn't stick with it long enough to see if it worked. For me, tea tree oil applied every 3 days with the DDF 1.5% SA used as a spot treatment work well, and don't cause irritation. I don't want to go from one extreme to the other and end up with premature wrinkles trying to dry out my acne, which I did in my early 20s.

Healed my acne!!

I have been using the Differin 0.1% gel and it has completely healed my acne and started to lighten marks leftover from past breakouts. In the first few weeks of using it my skin got really dry and irritated and burned a lot but knowing that was a normal reaction at first I kept on using it and am so happy that I did. My skin has never been better! It even shrunk my pores on and around my nose.

Differin

I've been using this product for years and prescibed by my dermatologist. He said that of all the otc retinoid products, the prescription cream works best. I use it for anti aging purposes even though it was designed for acne. He said it would make my skin look younger and it does! I switched to the less expensive product of Adapalene, of which it is made. It's less expensive, but you still need a prescription. I get compliments on my skin and I'm 68. Insurance won't cover this.

excellent for acne

I've been using the .01 gel for years for lifelong acne. I discovered that if I mix it with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide (I prefer Paula's Choice) the combination is the best topical I've ever used. I recommend you use it at night followed with a moisturizer. It's counter-intuitive, but I found that using a good moisturizer formulated for combination skin has actually further improved my acne in addition to controlling the dryness and flaking I used to be plagued with. The BP will tend to bleach sheets and clothing so I stick to ivory sheets and don't let it touch my regular clothing. Yes, the Differen is expensive but you only need a very small amount for each use and the tube will last a long time. It does need a prescription. During the day I use a BHA product covered with sunscreen or SPF make-up and this also helps. I like Neutrogena Oil Free Hydrating 3 in 1 Acne Stress Control (I find it on the internet) or one of the Paula's Choice products. It's taken years of experimenting but I finally found the regimen that works for me, maybe it will work for you.
