Beautypedia's 10 Best Products of 2013

In This Article:

With 2013 winding down, the Beautypedia Research Team thought it would be the perfect time to take a look back at some of the products we've reviewed over the year. We test out and research hundreds of skin care and makeup products, and many of them get our highest "BEST" rating. But there are some that truly set themselves apart, even from the others we've rated "BEST" – great products that bring something new to the table and do so beautifully. Without further ado, here are Beautypedia's 10 very best products of 2013!

Best Skin Care Products

Those of you who are familiar with the mission of Paula's Choice and Beautypedia know we have high standards when it comes to skin care! For a product to rate "BEST" it has to have a combination of great ingredients and great packaging to make sure those ingredients actually work. That said, there are six products that made the grade – and exceeded it – when we looked over them in 2013:

  • Paula's Choice Resist C15 Super Booster ($48 for .67 fl. oz.) – This new addition to our product line is a unique does-it-all skin care item for several reasons. It's effective against brown spots and wrinkles, and can be added to other anti-aging products to boost their effectiveness. Fortified with 15% pure Vitamin C, C15 also includes vitamin E, ferulic acid, and sodium hyaluronate – all in a bottle designed to make sure those ingredients last as long as possible!
  • Dermend Moisturizing Bruise Formula ($30 for 4.5 fl. oz.) – It's rare in the world of skin care that we see a truly one-of-a-kind product come along, but that's exactly how we qualify DerMend. This cream helps improve the appearance of bruised skin with an impressive blend of ceramides, retinol, arnica oil (which can help reduce inflammation), and glycolic acid. If you suffer from frequent bruising, this is one product you definitely need to try out.
  • ProActiv+ Eye Brightening Serum ($42 for 2 fl. oz.) – It's true you don't need a special product for your eye area (any good fragrance-free moisturizer will do), but this is a standout because of its effective formula. It's loaded with cell-communicating ingredients, antioxidants, and soothing agents like oatmeal and licorice derivative. This serum feels silky smooth without being greasy, and best of all –it doesn't have added fragrance!
  • Bioderma White Objective H2O ($19.20 for 200 ml) – This cleanser claims to help lighten skin, and while it contains an ingredient that can help, the benefit is probably slim. What does make this a standout product is that it's a gentle and effective cleanser that you don't have to rinse off. Just put it on with cotton pads and swipe, and you're good to go – making this an excellent option for cleaning skin on the fly (or just when there isn't clean water around).
  • Anthony Logistics Advanced Formula Lip Balm SPF 25 Mint and White Tea ($7.50 for .24 fl. oz.) – "Wait," you're thinking, "Isn't mint bad in skin care products?" It is – but the mint referred to in the name of this balm refers to a subtle flavor added to it (it goes away very quickly), and actual mint is NOT included in the ingredients. That aside, this is a moisturizing balm with a soft, glossy finish that includes true broad spectrum sun protection (which is harder than you may think to find in a lip product!). It also comes in a squeeze tube for easy application.
  • Black Opal Even True Tri-Complex Tonecorrect Fade Gel ($12.95 for 1 fl. oz.) – This gel designed to fade dark spots contains the gold standard in skin lightening ingredients, hydroquinone. Not only is that a great thing; the hydroquinone is boosted with plant extracts that have some potentially exciting research indicating they can lighten discolorations, too.

Best Makeup Products

So many makeup products come our way in a year's time that sometimes it's hard to keep track of how many we've reviewed! But there are some that impress us so much that we can't help but remember them. These are the standouts of 2013:

  • Victoria's Secret VS Pro Magic FX Radiant Flash Brightening Cream ($16 for 1.4 fl. oz.) – This is a highlighter that does more than just make skin look good – it contains ingredients that are good for skin, too! This lotion (it's not quite a cream as described) has a pearlescent finish that makes skin glow without unwanted shine or glitter. Add to that a mix of skin-beneficial emollients and some antioxidants, and that makes this product the best of both worlds! Note: As of 2014, this product is no longer made. See our list of Best Highlighters for current options.
  • NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder ($34) – This is an intriguing and excellent fragrance-free option if you're in the market for a pressed power. The look might be scary at first (this powder is a very pale white with a pearlescent sheen), but all those fears melt away when you put it on. It's truly translucent and sets makeup beautifully without looking powdery. Even better, it helps smooth out lines and pores for the ultimate in polished skin.
  • IT Cosmetics Hello Lashes 5-in-1 Treatment Mascara ($24) – If you've been disappointed in the past about mascaras claiming to make regular lashes look like falsies, then this mascara will change your mind. Hello Lashes doesn't flake or smudge and is water-Resistant, with an innovative brush that can reach all lashes (even those baby lashes on the lower lash line!). The end result is a mascara that exceeds expectations in volume, length, and separation.
  • Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro ($32) – Love the idea of a matte lip look but don't want dried-out lips? This is the product for you. This is essentially a cream lipstick in a lipgloss tube. You don't need much of it for full, opaque color. It feels light and stays creamy, even after it's dried to its true matte finish. Hours after you apply it, it still feels comfortable, a rarity for this kind of lipstick!

So there they are: the cream of the crop for 2013. Of course, you can check out all the products we've rated "BEST" any time at www.beautypedia.com!
