Spring Skin Care & Makeup

After a long, cold winter, spring weather is literally a breath of fresh air. Spring's new beginnings tend to focus on sprucing up the home, but your makeup and skin- care routine probably need some sprucing up, too!

A change in season is the perfect time to weed through those beauty products, toss the bad, and bring in the best! Taking the concept of spring cleaning to your beauty routine is a reminder to get rid of what's gotten old and then find the newest, highest quality products for your skin. With that in mind, our team of beauty experts has come up with five smart, easy tips anyone can use to look and feel beautiful this spring!

  • Consider switching moisturizers. Live in an area where winter's cold, dry air gives way to warm spring breezes and rising humidity? Swap that heavy, emollient face cream for a lightweight lotion or gel moisturizer. Pick one that's loaded with antioxidants and repairing ingredients for younger, healthy skin. We like Mary Kay Timewise Night Restore & Recover Complex and Paula's Choice Resist Anti-Aging Clear Skin Hydrator.
  • Bump up that SPF! As long, gray, and dark winter days give way to brighter, sunnier days with more time spent outdoors, it's wise to step up daily sun protection. SPF 25 may be fine for winter's short, cloudy days but not when the sun shines for hours on end. Look for a daytime moisturizer rated SPF 30 or greater. Top picks include philosophy help me spf broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 retinol day treatment lotion, Coola Face SPF 30 Cucumber Matte Finish, and Olay Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion SPF 50.
  • Spring's easy makeup mantra: More color, fewer products! Toss lipsticks, pencils, liners, blush, foundations, or eyeshadow colors that have sat around unused for more than a year. Chances are they'll never be worn again because they have dried up and won't apply evenly or smoothly anymore! Pitch any opened mascaras older than three months, too!

Now, get ready to do more with less: Switch to a tinted moisturizer or BB cream for color plus coverage; liven up cheeks with a soft yet "there" coral blush, dust on a bit of soft shimmer powder on eyelids and tops of cheekbones, and, right on trend, finish with a swipe of deep emerald green eyeliner and two coats of mascara. • Check the ingredient labels on skin care! The goal is to use the best products with best ingredients proven to benefit, not harm, skin. That means checking each product for irritating ingredients like SD- or denatured alcohol, menthol, fragrant oils such as lavender or eucalyptus, potent fragrances, and sodium lauryl sulfate. All of those can cause problem skin that won't look or feel its best, and they show up in lots of products—even those for sensitive skin! Learn more about how irritation hurts skin here.
  • Toss the jars and clear bottles. Any skin-care product with beneficial (read: anti-aging) ingredients that's packaged in a jar or clear bottle is a problem. Why? Most of the best ingredients for skin are also light- and air-sensitive, so clear or jar packaging causes these delicate ingredients to break down with each use. Plus, dipping fingers in a jar each day isn't hygienic. Look for products in opaque package designed to eliminate (or at least minimize) routine exposure to light and air. Find out more about why packaging matters here.

With these tips "spring cleaning" becomes a lot more fun; after all, who wouldn't want to shop for new makeup or skin care instead of scrubbing the floors or washing windows?
