Why Men Need a Daily Skincare Routine
Keeping skin healthy-looking and smooth means you will look handsome and suave in the short and long term! Research has shown how you look can be important for your career and dating opportunities. But there are other benefits, too—including some that might not be on your radar:
- Shaving will be easier, skin won’t look blotchy or red, and you'll experience fewer ingrown hairs, too.
- Having fewer breakouts, bumps, dry spots, and oily areas looks more attractive in person and in photographs.
- Renewed confidence! There’s nothing wrong (or unmanly) with looking better and the change in attitude it brings.
All of those benefits plus smoother, more even-textured and younger-looking skin are possible from using a simple, well formulated skincare routine. And don’t worry, this routine won’t take long at all!
A word on what we mean by "well formulated": It’s unfortunate, but most skincare products aimed at men contain sensitizing, drying ingredients. More men’s products than we care to count contain skin-aggravating fragrance (whether natural or synthetic, fragrance is a problem for everyone’s skin), menthol, peppermint, witch hazel, eucalyptus, denatured alcohol, and other problematic ingredients. It’s enough to put men off skincare for life—and we can’t say we blame you!
The Right Men’s Products for Better Skin Now
Although the general state of men’s skincare is disappointing, a handful of brands, including Paula’s Choice Skincare, offer brilliantly formulated men’s products. These products truly improve a man’s skin, and are simple to use. If you’ve never used gentle, highly effective skincare products, be prepared for an about-face that will definitely turn some heads! Here’s how a Paula’s Choice Skincare routine for men would look:
Step 1: Use PC4MEN Face Wash morning and evening. This clears excess oil and surface gunk so you’ll get a closer, smoother shave and the other products you apply will work even better. This is an essential step for skin that feels fresh and clean, not tight or dry.
Step 2: Shave each morning with fragrance free PC4MEN Shave (or, if you prefer, a foaming gel; there are definitely options out there). These types of formulas help shield skin from razor-related problems and post-shave redness. Cream formulas are usually concentrated, so only a thin layer is needed to achieve a close, ultra-smooth shave that leaves skin looking refreshed, not raw and aggravated. PC4MEN Shave is gentle enough for sensitive skin, even for those with rosacea.
Step 3: With a cotton pad or clean fingers, apply PC4MEN Soothe & Smooth. Think of this product as a soothing after-shave liquid that packs extra benefits. It’s the only product we know of that not only does everything a great after-shave should do but also contains BHA to exfoliate your face and neck without abrasion or dryness. This benefit fights enlarged, clogged pores, diminishes the look of wrinkles, smooths uneven skin tone, hydrates and even helps enhance the appearance of firm skin. You can also apply this to face and neck at night for results that you’ll notice the next morning!
What about scrubs? While most men’s lines offer face scrubs, this type of product doesn’t work in any manner like a BHA exfoliant does—the results aren’t even close! Scrubs also cause micro-tears on skin and from any angle, that’s just bad skincare. This roughness leads to several problems you won’t have to deal with if you use a leave-on BHA exfoliant instead. See this article for more details on the importance of exfoliation.
Step 4, AM: Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater, every day, year-round. Don’t like the feel of sunscreens? Lots of men feel the same way, which is why Paula’s Choice Skincare’s PC4MEN Daytime Protect SPF 30 was formulated to feel weightless and not look shiny on skin. We think you’ll be surprised at how amazingly light this feels, which means you’ll look forward to using it—and that’s the goal!
Sunscreen is the game-changing step to reduce the risk of early signs of skin aging and other visible changes many men commonly associate with "just getting older". We won’t even get into the issues of reducing the risk of skin cancer! Guys, you don’t have to see those changes, and daily use of a sunscreen can help ensure that doesn’t happen!
Step 4, PM: After washing your face and exfoliating with PC4MEN Soothe & Smooth, apply a lightweight moisturizer packed with ingredients that recharge skin’s appearance. PC4Men Nighttime Repair is an ingenious way to stop dry skin in its tracks—including around the eyes—while toughening up skin’s defenses with powerhouse ingredients like retinol and antioxidants. Your significant other will notice how much better your skin looks and feels—score!
A Smarter Shave
No discussion of men’s skincare would be complete without some advice on how to get the best shave. Shaving is the one act that clearly distinguishes a man’s skincare routine from women’s skincare—the rest is mostly marketing to appeal to each gender. This advice will make shaving easier and faster:
- The best time to shave is at the end of, or immediately following your shower (let personal preference be your guide).
- Washing your face before shaving helps soften the hairs which makes your shave smoother.
- Don't use very hot water as that will aggravate skin, leading to redness and a dry, tight feeling.
- Use a clean razor and shave in the direction of your hair growth, using short strokes.
- If you find you need to shave in the opposite direction of hair growth (such as for whiskers on your neck), do so slowly and gently.
- Be sure to rinse your razor often and replace every few shaves.
- Run your hands over your face and neck to ensure that you haven't missed any areas.
- Finish your morning skincare routine by applying a broad spectrum sunscreen, even if you’ll be indoors most of the day. More info on sun-smart behavior here.
