I keep coming back to this product!
Living in the south, I am surrounded by tanned people. I have used this product since its inception. I am medium-toned, so the color is perfect. It does take a long time to dry (1+ hours), but it lasts and lasts and the color deepens in Day 2. I have had this tan last for almost a week, so I'm not sure why one reviewer said that it doesn't last. It does!
Please please please make a spray version that truly does dry in 5-10 minutes.

Good Stuff!
I have tried expensive French tanners, top-reviewed drugstore tanners, you name it. This one has the best price and results. It is not perfumed and does not have that gross smell, however it does have a bit of tanner scent after a few hours, which I believe is simply the active ingredient in all self-tanners. As a very fair-skinned person I was happy with the colour on my face and body after one application. I will wait for a few more applications over the next couple of weeks before giving it five stars, but at this point I have no complaints and would recommend it to my friends.

I just applied my self tanner for the first time and had to go online and take the time to send in a review. I am not sensitive to product by HIGHLY sensitive to fragrance and masking fragrance. I am impressed that this tanner has no smell or fragrance at all. Please DO NOT discontinue, I will be a customer for life. Just Right
I first purchased a sample of Almost the Real Thing because I've had so many disasters with other self tanners, I appreciated being able to sample it first. I am half Caucasian and half Asian so most tanners turn me a weird orange. This didn't. I put it on before bed and woke up with a nice not-too-brown face and neck with no lines. I perspire a lot so I don't use tanners in the daytime to avoid streaking. I also liked the fact that it doesn't have a 'funny' odor like so many of the other tanners do. I put it on two days in a row to get just the right amount of tan. It lasts about four days and makes gives me that healthy glow without the sun damage.

Love It!
I have used numerous self-tanning lotions in the past and all have caused skin irritation. I have used this a few times w/ no rash and great color results. It has a very light/mild smell to it, and is not overpowering like some other self-tanning products. I have not had any orange color as some people claim. In following the directions fully, I have a nice bronze glow.

Love it!
This is the best self-tanner I have tried & I've tried lots of them! I love that it has no smell and that the first application comes out very lightly...but it's buildable. After a few days, I have a beautiful "tan." I applied it with latex gloves and had no issues with blotchiness. Be careful if you are using products to lighten melasma/age spots...this (and ANY self-tanner) will bring them out. Other than that, I LOVE this product.

I have been using Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel for two years now and I love it. I use to love sun bathing but with all the bad things that come with that now, I decided to check out some self-tanning products. And check out I did! There are so many bad products out there that claim to give you the best tan. When I tried Paula's, I wasn't sure at first what I thought. Then people started to compliment me and how nice my tan was...I mean a lot of people! Everybody is different and with this product you also have to experiment. I know now how much to put on my face and how much for my legs, also how often to apply it. Have fun with it and be patient because the end results are amazing!

Great and subtle!
I purchased this because it was on sale and I love Paula's choice, but I am not an avid fake tanner. I live in MN and it's acceptable to be pale half the year! I have used this on my face now 3 times and I love the very subtle golden tan it gives me. I like that it isn't too intense because I hardly have to worry about it turning out splotchy. I have had no issues with sensitivity or breakouts, which is great. The formula is nice, but the caramel color in the gel isn't very opaque, so it would be hard to apply to the whole body an know where it is (thus the 4/5 stars). But I would definitely recommend it!

So I want to start by saying I gave this product 2 stars only because it does tan your skin like a self tanner is supposed to. Other than that, I am not impressed with this product. I am disappointed because I love so many of Paula's products. I followed the directions word for word and turned out looking like an orange blotchy mess. Also I gently exfoliated exactly how it said and everything. Waited 8 hrs before rinsing it off and it still only lasted 2 days on me, which I was happy with because it looked terrible. I have tried other tanners that lasted almost 2 weeks and looked much better. It says fragrance free, which it may be, but it still has somewhat of that self tanner yucky smell. Now that I have talked about why I don't like the product, I will vent about my next issue/complaint. I purchased not 1, but 2 bottles of this product that I can't stand. Liking every Paula product I've ever tried, I thought I'd for sure like this product as well, so I bought 2 bottles (intending on using them the next few months so I could have a nice tan by summer). Well of course I contacted customer service via email and told them everything... They said I could ship the bottles back for a return. Really? They want me to pay more money to ship the bottles back, wait for them to recieve them, then wait for them to send my refund, then purchase products I know I like, pay more shipping for those, and then wait days for those? Ughh I work everyday of the week and do not wish to go through that hassle. Looks like I'm stuck with these tanners that I'll never use and I'm short money that I could have used on other Paula's products that I may have loved. This makes me nervous to purchase other products from her line that I may not like, I don't want to take a chance of not liking another product and being stuck with it and out the money. Fabulous Self-Tanner
This is simply the best self-tanner I have ever used. It goes on very smoothly and evenly, does't have a strong odor, and results in an attractive, believable tan. I like to apply it with a foam tanner mitt from Ulta, which helps the product go on evenly and doesn't leave a residue on the palms of your hands. Have received many compliments when using this tanner.

The Best Self Tanner for me!
I have tried absolutely EVERY self tanning product out there, some being better than others of course but never completely satisfied. Either they wouldn't tan me enough, or it would streak, or I looked orange. However, on the very first try of using Paula's self tanning lotion, I noticed the very next day a beautiful extremely natural tan. I had absolutely no streaking! I recommend using gloves to apply to your body just to avoid getting your palms of your hands really dark, and then just using some regular lotion to help blend your arms with your hands. I truly can't believe how natural this product looks and it lasted for a least a week on my body if not a few days longer. Of course my face faded quicker because I use an exfoliant, but if you want to avoid quicker fading, just don't use your exfoliant the night you apply your self tanner. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT! Also, the price cannot be beaten for the amount of product you get. I've spend as much as 60 dollars for a tanner with less ounces and did not work. Paula's product is definitely the best bang for your buck!!

Excellent results!
Since my natural skincolor is pasty/pink I have become a self-tanner addict. I have tried numerous products over the years but this is by far the best. It leaves my skin nicely tanned (even my hard-to-tan face) very soft and silky-smooth. I love it!! (Thx for the samples-they got me hooked).

BRONZED FACE!
I was just testing this product on my face (which is as pale as paper)to match the rest of my slightly tanned body. Within a couple hours...my face was darker than the rest of my body!! It has a nice tanned glow look. I'm very impressed and just ordered more to see how it looks on my body! No adverse reactions, no fake baking flesh smell, and for the price? There's no need to waste anymore dollars on all that drug store crap. Say goodbye to cheap self-tanning formulas and hello to quality.

The best! I've been using it for years. I've tried about every option on the market, both department store and drug store. I've also spent quite a bit on spray tans. I have to say this one's a winner. The color is good, it has a cream/gel texture which smooths on evenly. Another that I like is Lancome's flash bronzer, which has a liquidy gel texture. It dries down quickly, but is loaded with alcohol and can sting a bit. I feel like I get the same result from Paula's, but for a much more reasonable price, no stinging, and the benefit of the antioxidants. Great stuff!

No Stink

The pigment needs to be reformulated. It is too red, orange. Take a look at Fake Bake. You may not like it, but the color is perfect. It comes out very chocolate, but not to worry, it is very shear and buildable. I will order again when the color is corrected and it has anti-aging ingredients. Thank you.

This stuff works GREAT and the best part is that it is fragrance free (for perfume allergy sufferers like myself.) One thing I would suggest to new users: apply lightly--I applied too much the first time and it was too dark.

Very surprising
I haven't used a self-tanner for years and only tried this because I rec'd a free sample. I was surprised how great it worked for me and I'm ordering a full-size bottle. I am 62 with all the requisite sun-damaged skin (age spots/spider veins, etc.) and to my eye everything looked better. I am very fair, but did not get the orange color mentioned in previous reviews. I agree about the smell not being objectionable as some are. One application lasted for days for me. I guess the bottom line is to order it in sample size to see how your skin will react.

I am fairly pale and the product turned my skin very orange after about 6 hours. It was also streaky in spots; although I followed the directions, that could have been my application. I am terribly disappointed. The first thing I look for in a self tanner is that it has an instant bronzer, so I can see where I have applied product as I go. This product advertises a caramel color for this very purpose, however, it goes on crystal clear. I don't know how anyone can achieve an even application with zero guide to what has been done and what has been missed. I have a rather strange body chemistry which has caused all the self-tanning products I've tried, and I've tried a lot, to turn orange on me. So I bought samples of this one. As a very fair-skinned gal, I was hopeful about this product and followed the directions to a "T." The color seems like it may be too dark for me, and there was streaking the first time I applied it. After the product drys on your skin, it has no smell. There are people who say this product has a funky smell; however, they should notice that the smell goes away within minutes. With every other self-tanner I have ever used, the smell stays on my skin for days -- in fact, with other self-tanning lotions, the smell lasts just as long as the color. I will never use another self-tanner again other than Paula's Choice!

I think it's important to say what self tanners I have used to compare. While I've tried many, the ones I have used more frequently in the past have included Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel, Tan Towels, St Tropez Moussse, Jergens gradual tanning lotion and Sevin Nyne. This is by far, my favorite. It is comparable to Clarins Self Tanning Instant gel in terms of application, but I find it to be an even better natural cover. I do use fairly liberally to prevent streaks and I find I still get a great, even, natural tan. There is minimal scent. To note, I naturally have fair skin, light brown hair and a pinkish undertone. This is the best for your skin and money, hands down.

Blown Away... In a Good Way
I've never used a self-tanner on my face... partially because I was never that impressed with how they worked on my body, the smell is usually vile, and I have the type of facial skin that barely needs an excuse to break out. After carefully reading the reviews for this product and having excellent results with several of Paula's other products, I decided to give it a try. All I can say is... I can't believe I waited so long! The light, scentless formula is easy to use and it has never stained my hands or clothes. Best of all it evens out the blotchiness of my skin and masks the different skin tones on my chest, neck and face. Basically, I just have a subtle healthy glow. The bonus? It has never irritated my skin. Big fan!!

Not for me
I am very fair, freckly, red haired, and I cannot tan to save my life. I tried the self-tanning gel a few times, according to directions, but it came out looking like I rubbed orange clay on my legs - very orange, very streaky. I've gone back to the L'Oreal self-tanner that goes on much more evenly. But I still love you Paula!

White Chick Club!!! YES!
I'm a member of the White Chic Club. We either don't tan or barely achieve any color under the best circumstances. We typically just burn. Our skin is fine grained and very white--Scotts-Irish, myself. If we use self-tanners we typically appear sunburned or suspiciously in search of a job as a pole dancer. BUT, enter Paula's Choice Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel. VIOLA! If you're a member of the White Chick Club look no further. I've tried a lot of self-tanners, based on reviews. No go. They sucked. The Loreal towelettes were the last of the lot I tried. My neighbor though I had a sunburn with a light application. The stink never left and it turned me orange. 'Almost' looks unbelievably natural, not orange (I applied sparingly the first time). There is no lingering smell after it cures for 12-hours or so. Even before the complete curing the smell was light. You can make yourself darker in increments to achieve the White Chick color of your choice. I really look like I have a natural light tan. Not overdone at all. The product is easy to put on and doesn't streak like others. FOLLOW the DIRECTIONS, don't just slap it on. Scrub and moisturize beforehand, of course. There are no dark areas around my knees, elbows and heels. I'm sold. White Chicks with tans unite!

I have light to medium skin and this tanning gel rocks! Gives me a natural look without turning orange. I use it 1-2x a week on my face and body. No breakouts (thank goodness). From my experience, all self-tanners have a strange smell, but I find this one to be mild. I always have one bottle I am using and one under the sink. I don't ever want to be without it. Strange at First
I followed the directions exactly, and it was a nice light golden color and within 3 hours, it was a reddish orange tan. It did darken a LOT over night, too- at first, I was appalled because it didn't look natural at all, but after I showered the next morning it turned to a lovely natural glow. It is a great self tanner! Overall a good product.

Great color, not so great smell
Really, this tanning gel is wonderful except for the strong chemical smell that is pretty typical of nearly all sunless tanning products. The consistency is so easy to smooth into the skin, no orange hands, and the color is very natural! I'm all for unscented products, but if a little scent could help this one out I'd be ecstatic because I really like the product otherwise. I will probably continue to use it, though, because I haven't found anything that goes on so well!

Amazing! Best Self-Tanner I've Tried
This gel has a great consistency, so it's easy to apply and easy to use. The color is VERY natural on my skin (I'm Caucasian, light skinned, with golden undertones). Overall, I like this product best of all the self-tanners I've used, & I've tried sprays, gels, and lotions from all sorts of brands. Also, I think the price & quantity is fair. Satisfactory(?)
I have been using a personal favorite spray tan for a few years now. Since my spray tanner was tucked away and I had a sample of Paula's, I decided to try it. The good news is that once it was all over a done with, a day later, the color looked fine. The bad news was that it took 5 hours plus, for the greasiness to go away (I usually put my self tanner on in the day and my skin was very dry so I wouldn't have expected greasiness from anything at this dry winter time) and the smell was terrible. I didn't realize what a find I had made with the other tanning spray until I tried this one. Perhaps Paula and her team can improve this in the future.

Better than a Mystic Tan...
I applied this self tanner last year for our annual trip to Aruba and got a Mystic this year. Comparing the pictures from last yeat, I looked so much more tan and even. Others looking at the pitcures even noticed. Way to go Paula! Great color and it lasts.

Amazing!
I have Snow White-fair skin, but have never been able to bring myself to use self-tanners because of the smell associated with all of them. Although I could still smell a faint smell in this gel, it was not strong enough to bother me. The color is beautiful, too. I am hooked!

I apologize but this was a complete waste of my own money to not even seen any "tan" results from this bottle. I have used it already several times and not notice any significant different in the tone of my skin. No tanned skin at all here that I received. I love how this goes on and the end color. Like all DHA self tanners, it has a horrible after smell and turns my age spots even darker. I love Paula and use her products, but I guess even she can't find a solution to the stink and dark spots.

Not that great
I consider myself to be an expert self-tanner. I have always had fair skin and use self tanning products in the summer. I just could not get this come out even and I found the color to be a little too dramatic for me. I felt orange. I will probably continue to use it on my face but will go back to a drugstore brand for the rest of my body.

Nice even color
I recently tried the Neutrogena line of sunless tanning products. Well, I look orange (not tan) esp on my legs. I thought I will give this one a try. Ordered some samples. Very nice even color but it does fade rather quickly. I like it a lot. Will be placing a order for some soon!

As others have mentioned, this self tanner truly does not streak. The gel texture of this formula makes it a breeze to apply, and while I would guess that the active chemical that creates the "tan" is minimal in this formula---and that's probably why this self tanner is so good. The effect is minimal, which is also a good thing, and if you really want to look tan, I'd recommend putting it on two days in a row for maximum effect. In any case, this formula is much better than some of the one's that Paula herself recommends---i.e. the self tanners from Clinique, which are much more prone to streaking. As usual, this understated and underrated product is economical, elegant and all around excellent.

May cause a rash
A subset of the population is apparently allergic to the main ingredient in self tanners, Dihydroxyacetone. Discovered I was one of them when I got a rash after the second application of the 'Almost the real thing' self tanner, the first self tanner I have used in years. Good news is the Antioxident Serum seems to be helping the contact dermatitis.

By far the most realistic self-tanner I have ever used. Having fair skin, every self-tanning product I have used looked unnatural and obvious on my legs. How should this product be used?

Use a body shampoo or shower gel to prevent soap film.

Towel dry completely.

Apply the self-tanner evenly and smoothly, one area at a time.

How long does the color last?
That depends on how well it "takes" on your skin. Results often vary widely with the same self-tanner. On some the color may last a week or more, while others find it lasts 2 days or fewer.
How does using an AHA or BHA affect the results I get from using Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel?
There are pros and cons to combining any exfoliant (AHA or BHA exfoliant or topical scrub) with a self-tanner. Our self-tanner contains dihydroxyacetone (a derivative of sugar that turns skin cells a shade of brown), which affects only the uppermost layers of skin. Exfoliants affect these same layers and, as a result, the exfoliant sloughs off the skin cells affected by the self-tanner, thus reducing how long your "tan" lasts. That's the negative. The positive is that when the skin is smoother (the benefit of using a well-formulated exfoliant) you get much more even-toned results from the self-tanner. Unless you're willing to avoid using an AHA or BHA product or a topical scrub when trying to obtain and maintain a self-tan, the only solution is to compromise. That may involve using the BHA or AHA lotion less often (such as two or three times per week rather than daily) or applying Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel more often to maintain the level of color you like.
