  • 5% concentration of benzoyl peroxide, considered to be the best over-the-counter ingredient for combating and killing acne-causing bacteria in the pore
  • Lightweight lotion texture contains no irritating inactive ingredients (such as alcohol and menthol) found in many acne-products
  • Effective on blemishes but still gentle on the skin
  • May be used all over the face (or blemish-prone areas of the body) or as a spot treatment
  • Contains a blend of soothing anti-irritants
  • 100% fragrance- and colorant-free
  • Active Ingredient: Benzoyl Peroxide 5% (topical disinfectant/antibacterial agent). Other Ingredients: Water, Propylene Glycol (water-binding/slip agent), Bisabolol, Allantoin (anti-irritants), Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer (film-forming/suspending agent), Hydroxyethylcellulose (thickening agent), Sodium Citrate (pH adjuster), Laureth-4 (emulsifier), Caprylyl Glycol (skin conditioning agent), Hexylene Glycol (solvent), Triethanolamine (pH adjuster), Disodium EDTA (chelating agent), Phenoxyethanol (preservative).
Directions: Apply to cleansed skin. Cover the affected area with a thin layer of Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution 1–3 times per day. Because excessive drying of the skin may occur, start with one application daily then gradually increase frequency of application if needed or as directed by a doctor. If bothersome dryness or peeling occurs, reduce application to once per day or once every other day. If going outside, wear sunscreen rated SPF 15 or greater. If sensitivity develops, discontinue use.

What is the difference between the two Blemish Fighting Solutions?
The major difference is the amount of benzoyl peroxide each contains. The regular Blemish Fighting Solution contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, a good amount to start with for treating mild breakouts or for those with sensitive, blemish-prone skin. Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution contains 5% benzoyl peroxide, a more potent amount best for stubborn blemishes that have not responded favorably to lower strength disinfectants. Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution can be alternated with the regular Blemish Fighting Solution depending on your skin's needs and the severity of your blemishes.

Both Blemish Fighting Solutions are designed to feel light and fresh on the skin, leaving no residue. Each contains skin-soothing agents and dries down to a soft matte finish that will not interfere with makeup application.

How often should I use either Blemish Fighting Solution?
As often as needed. Some people use it two or three times a week and some use it twice a day. It really depends on your skin and how it responds to the product.

How long will it take to see a difference?
Once again, it really is different for everyone, but give it one month (or one menstrual cycle for women).

If I use the Blemish Fighting Solution more often will my acne go away faster?
Everyone has different skin, so results can differ from person to person. What will happen is that the benzoyl peroxide will help disinfect the area, killing the bacteria that cause pimples.

I use the Blemish Fighting Solution every day. Why do I still break out?
Not everyone responds the same to acne treatments. It often takes experimenting to find what works best for your skin type. While many people have great success with my blemish-fighting products, you might need to try prescription-only medications (please see our Skin Care Solution for Blemishes for more specifics).

After I apply the Beta Hydroxy Lotion or Liquid, do I immediately apply the Blemish Fighting Solution? Or do I wait a few minutes for the BHA to be absorbed and then apply the Blemish Fighting Solution to my dry (rather than moist) skin?
You can apply either Blemish Fighting Solution immediately after the BHA. Salicylic acid (BHA) has been found to start working quite quickly and may actually help the penetration of the benzoyl peroxide product.

I have been using (or previously used) Paula's Choice Blemish Fighting Solutions with Benzoyle Peroxide. How are those products different from the new CLEAR Benzoyle Peroxide Acne Fighting Treatments?
Other than the name, CLEAR Acne Fighting Treatments are identical to our Blemish Fighting Treatments which are being phased out. The same formula that's worked so well for thousands of Paula's Choice customers struggling with acne has been repackaged, renamed, and added to our CLEAR line. Paula wanted to reposition this product as part of her streamlined, 3-step approach for achieving clear skin. You'll get the same great results, now organized into a proven system for managing acne.

If oxygen can cause free-radical damage to the skin, and benzoyl (and hydrogen) peroxide work by releasing an oxygen molecule to the skin, do benzoyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide cause free-radical damage?
While they are both peroxides, current research indicates that benzoyl peroxide probably doesn't create the same (if any) oxidative issues as hydrogen peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is also highly effective in reducing acne lesions. I do not recommend the use of hydrogen peroxide for acne because research shows it has cumulative damaging effects on the skin.

Are the Blemish Fighting Solutions only a spot treatment or for all over?
You can use it as either a spot treatment over breakouts and problem areas or all over.

Can my child or teenager use the Blemish Fighting Solutions?
Paula's Choice Blemish Fighting Solutions are excellent for teens because they are much gentler than almost any other topical antibacterial product on the market. Neither product contains alcohol, menthol, or other irritating ingredients. Instead, they contain anti-irritants that calm the redness and inflammation associated with breakouts. They should also be fine to use on children, but if your child is under 10 years old, we recommend that you consult your child's physician prior to use.

We recommend starting with the regular strength Blemish Fighting Solution that contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and is best for treating mild breakouts or for those with sensitive, blemish-prone skin. Stubborn blemishes that have not responded to lower strength disinfectants can be treated with Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution with 5% benzoyl peroxide.

However, as can happen with any skin care product, if irritation or a rash occurs, discontinue use immediately.

I use one of your Blemish Fighting Solutions and have noticed some of my towels and/or pillowcases have become stained, almost as if they were bleached. Why does this happen?
Because these products contain peroxide they may bleach hair or dyed fabrics. Apply carefully around hairline and eyebrows and allow product to absorb and dry completely before coming in contact with dyed fabrics.

Rave about three of your products tried and LOVED! 1. Super Antioxidant Concentrate, 2. Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Lotion, and 3. Exfoliating Treatment. They all perform beautifully and as promised. Keep up the wonderful work with your reviews as well. I read them faithfully! Thanks, Paula.

    Extra strength blemish fighting solution
I have mild acne on my chin. The dermo. prescribed clindoxyl gel but, months & months went by with barely any improvement. I stopped using it & purchsed the extra strength blemish fighting solution & saw great results right away! Thanks
    —Rose-Ann

    Great for Persistent Acne
I had to work up to this strength from the 2.5%, but it is really better for existing breakouts. I still use the lower strength all over my face at night for maintenance.
    —Kristen

    No thank you
I bought this product to use with Paula's 2%Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel and was very unimpressed. I saw little to no results even after using the products consistently for over three months. Huge waste of money.
    —Ashley

    This Works
This dries my blemishes within a few days; sometimes even overnight. I am sensitive to the Proactive lotion smell and can not tolerate it. Paula's Blemish lotion has no smell and is non-irritating. It's worth spending the extra money and lasts a long time. God Bless you and your great team Paula : )

    Worked. Period.
This is THE step in Paula's choice (and every brand ever) that delivered results in terms of eliminating acne. I use PC cleanser, BHA, and moisturizer and love them all, but THIS step finished the acne once and for all. In three days, I was about half clear. In about a month I was 95% clear.

    Finely milled
This happens to be the best benzoyl peroxide lotion out there! I have tried at least 20 different kinds in the past 20 years! I am 38 years old and have suffered with moderate acne my whole life! Layering the 5% blemish fighting solution over the 2% beta hydroxide gel has made my complexion clear and smooth for the first time in my life!! Trust me, like with all acne sufferers, I have tried everything in the past!!!! This is so finely milled, it feels wonderful on the skin.

    A Good Product, but...
I'd actually give this a 3.5 as it's one of the very few benzoyl peroxide products I can use without getting a red, swollen rash. However, the packaging leaves a bit to be desired. The product is quite thin and it takes some finesse to get the lid back on the tube without spilling what you've dispensed (how about using that nifty tube with a pump!). Also, I notice that the last bit (about 1/4 of the tube) separates and becomes less effective.

    WHAT A WASTE!
It did absolutely nothing for my moderate acne! I've tried numerous products from prescription (Tazorac, Benzoyl Peroxide, etc.) to Proactiv. None of the products worked and sadly, I have to add Paula's Choice to that list. My acne is still as bad as it was prior to using it. Great
I have never written a review for a skin product, mostly because nothing worked for me and I thought I was the one exception to all of the other great reviews of so many other products. I also was hesitant because I started using PC's toner, 2% Beta hydroxy gel and the 5% extra strength blemish fighting solution at the same time (I know; not smart). My face broke out horribly in clusters of deep underneath the skin, cystic-looking acne. I discontinued all of her products and once my face had cleared some, I began by adding just the 2% beta gel...and my face broke out horribly again. Needless to say, I definitely do not use that (and others please be cautious about the 2% beta gel product), but I did try the BP extra strength solution again and it has done wonders for my moderate-severe acne. It is so light in texture and I agree that maybe it is because it is so finely milled that it is very effective. I have been a 2.5% BP user for years (proactiv's solution) but it was no longer effective. I have moderate to severe acne and PC's BP's 5% solution clears whatever bump may arise within 1-2 days. Prior to finding PC, I tried another 5% BP solution by another brand and it wasn't nearly as effective as PC. Though Paula doesn't necessarily recommend some natural products or ingredients, I tend to use them. I use a very gentle cleanser (2% salicylic acid), a natural, alcohol free witch hazel based toner and the BP extra strength solution (followed with a natural sunscreen). My skin hasn't looked this clear since before the birth of my son. Paula please do not discontinue or alter the formulation of your BP extra strength solution. It is wonderful! Thanks!

    zit zappin!
The zit first appeared two days ago, since then I applied the creamy gel, once a night. By today, it has gone down tremendously! This actually worked, unlike the Neutrogena one I usually use.

    So-So
I ordered samples of this product, and don't feel like I noticed extraordinary results. I am sure consistantcy is key though, and I have only used it for a week.
    —Mindy

    it burns, geez
i use the whole skin balancing system, cleanser, toner, 2% BHA liquid, moiturizer and the extra blemish control, then my face starts to burn, and the customer service told me that's not normal, so i wash it off, but my face is still all red, and it burns still for a few hours, i don't know it's because i applied too much BHA or what, it burns, geez Customer Care: Please call our Customer Service for assistance with finding a product that will work for you. Also, please note that we have a 60-day 100% Satisfaction Guarantee return policy.
    —christophe

    well, false alarm
sorry, the blemish fight get doesn't burn, it's the BHA 2% liquid which burns, because i used too much. this gel works, i think, but it leaves some marks on the skin, which i have to treat later.
    —christophe

    Bleaching
This product does work - BUT it has ruined several hundred dollars worth of items in my house (sheets, new towels, and some clothing). It bleaches everything it touches! Even after figuring out what was causing all the bleach marks and trying to be VERY careful with it, there are still new bleach marks showing up. I've had to have my son discontinue using this as the fabric damage was getting too expensive! Wonderful Product
I bought this Paula's Choice item a little while ago. F.Y.I. I have combination skin, it's oily around the t-zone, with some dry patches, prone to minimal acne and sensitive also. Sucks to be me right! Anyways, this is an amazing product!! It has worked wonders. It keeps my acne at bay or at least on the small side. It doesn't have any harsh side effects on my sensitive skin. Do keep in mind that a little goes a long way. If you apply too much it does cause some peeling. Did I mention that it was a woderful product? Yeah!
