Directions: Apply a thin layer twice daily over areas with brown pigment discolorations. During the day, follow with sunscreen rated SPF 15 or greater (essential to prevent discoloration from recurring). At night, follow with a Paula's Choice moisturizer or specialty product as needed. Results should appear after 8–12 weeks of consistent use.
Important note: We wanted to share with you some information about why our Skin Lighteners can change color and reassure you that this is perfectly natural and that the active ingredient is still stable and effective.
My Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion and Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel contain hydroquinone. This ingredient is extremely sensitive to light and air, which is why it is packaged in an opaque tube with a strong barrier layer. Once hydroquinone begins to oxidize, even a little, it turns a light tannish to slightly brown color. As the oxidation continues, the hydroquinone can turn a deeper shade of brown. I have heard conflicting information about what this discoloration means in terms of the product's stability.
To be sure both my skin lightening products, particularly the sample packets, were still stable we sent several to an independent lab to test for the level of active hydroquinone. I am pleased to report that the results showed that these products, including the sample packets, contained an effective amount of hydroquinone. The labs results showed that the level of hydroquinone fell by a fractional, insignificant amount: from 2% to 1.85%.
As for the regular size of these products: you may notice your skin lightener is turning color only toward the top of the tube, where some air exposure occurs with each use. The opaque tube packaging reduces the amount of light and air that comes in contact with the products but is not 100% airtight, which explains why these products may still change color over time. Important note: for maximum effectiveness, we recommend using your Paula's Choice skin lightening product within six months after opening. Also, be sure to recap tightly after each use and store in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct light.
What is the difference between the Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion and Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel?
The main differences are texture (gel vs. lotion) and the type of exfoliant included in the formula. Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel was designed with normal to oily skin in mind, so it contains salicylic acid (BHA) which is preferred over AHAs for that skin type. Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion contains glycolic acid and is ideal for someone with normal to dry skin.
Can I use an AHA or BHA in combination with either one of the skin lighteners?
Using an additional exfoliant may not be necessary with either skin-lightening product, because both already contain them. However, if you prefer, you can alternate use of one of our AHA or BHA products with either skin lightener.
I have heard/read from sources that hydroquinone is carcinogenic (cancer-causing) and the FDA wants to ban it. What does Paula think of that?
Paula has written about this topic on her Web site and in her books, but the summation is that the negative research about hydroquinone and the frightening assertions being levied in the media are not related to how this effective ingredient is used in skin-care products sold in the United States. It works!!
I am 35 and have been dealing with melasma patches on both cheeks for at least the past 3 years. I have had IPL treatments (at $100 each) every 3-6 months for the past two years, but the little result didn't last. Not working
After reading the reviews on this product I was hopeful that I might actually find a product that worked for the hyperpigmentation on my forehead. I have been using as directed twice per day for over 2 months now and have seen no improvement. I also seem to have a constantly recurring blemish now on the area where I am using the product. I use a 30 spf sunscreen on my face everday. Although I like some of the other products I have tried, this is a no go for me although I will continue trying until the recommended 3 months is up hoping for a miracle. -Sheryl C Customer Care Response: Hydroquinone and glycolic acid are considered the most effective ingredients for reducing and potentially eliminating brown skin discolorations (not red spots from breakouts). Your sunscreen must be formulated to block not only UVB, but also include the UVA-protecting ingredients of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or avobenzone. Allergic Reaction
I wasn't able to use long enough to rate, but did want to mention the reaction I had to this product. I have never had a skin reaction in my thirty-five years of using lotions and cosmetics. My face developed red splotches with swelling and some itching in spots. I do have allergies to weeds and grass pollen and a mild case of rosacea. I can't think of anything else that might explain this. I am able to use the Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel with no problems.

Wow!
I had tried DDF's version, but it didn't do anything for my freckles. I have now been using Paula's lotion for four months, and the progress is quite noticable. I can only use it once/every other day or I get too red in the cheeks, but I like how it feels, and I love the results. Also, it is very moisturizing. On nights I use this, followed by a serum or not, I do not need an additional moisturizer.

It stings!
I've just got this product in the mail and have only been using it for only 3 days. It seem that on the 3rd day, it stung like crazy after a few minutes. And my face was red. I washed it off immediately.
I am disappointed since I've read so much good reviews here and decided to buy the full size tube. I suggest you try a sample before making a commitment on your orders.
I would like to continue using if it didn't sting like it does. I just don't think that's a good sign. I have olive skin tone and normal skin. I am in my early 30's and my face is showing some freckles and brown spots (near cheek bones, chin),etc. So I wanted to use it to help fade it away. I think I will stick to more botanical ingredients or brands. I do better with those.

Brown and smelly
Didn't care for it. It was brown and smelly. It was too much trouble to send it back. The BHA based gel is less brown and less smelly...

Quite effective
I find this product to be quite effective at reducing hyperpigmentation spots. I'm half way through the tube and, alternating it with Tretitoin, the darker areas are almost gone completely. Great product!

still waiting for results
After a few years, I'm still waiting for results. The backs of my hands look better (but I also use Paula's exfoliant on them), but there's no change on my face/neck area. I have small areas (about 3/4" diameter) of darker pigmentation plus large dark freckles that won't respond, even with two times daily application and Paula's sunscreen. Also, I agree with a previous review that it does have a particularly unpleasant smell!

Great Cream But Keep Expectations Realistic!
I'm 54 and just this year noticed that the brown sun spots on my face got quite dark - same for my forearms - almost overnight. I used this produce twice a day in both areas and started noticing the lightning effect after 2 months. It is now month 4 and I have noticed a substantial reduction in the brown spots on both my face and forearms. The effect was significant enough that I will only require 1 or 2 light laser treatments instead of the normal 4 to 6 to totally banish the spots on my face. This product won't totally eradicate your brown spots but will substantially lighten them, so keep your expectations realistic! (I just wish this product was available in Canada so the exchange and shipping wasn't an extra cost...)

Really wanted to like this.
I'm sure this helps for some people, but I am unfortunately not one of them. Over the past month of using this product my pigmented areas have darkened significantly, despite extremely careful use of high spf sunscreen and wearing a hat, etc. I have had a similar reaction to hydroquinone in the past, but I was hoping it would be different this time. To be fair, if hydroquinone works for you, this is probably a nicely formulated product (thus the 2 stars).

Irritates skin
This lotion made my skin burn and become itchy. I am able to use the skin lightening gel without a problem. I wonder what the difference is between the two products? I would like to return the skin lightening cream.

Completely Ineffective
Well, if I could give this zero stars I would. I found it to be completely useless and a waste of my time and money. It did absolutely nothing for my skin and it is still has blotchy and freckly as ever...even after using for 3+ months. The rest of the tube will be going in the circular file as I feel prolonging the use of this product any longer is a waste of time.

Splotchy reaction
I am an avid PC user and can't live without the one-step cleanser, 1% bha and antioxidant serum. This is the only product that I don't like from PC. After applying it on the brown spots on my face, I developed swelling red splotches, like hives. I have never had this reaction in all 30 years of my life. So I thought maybe I'd try it in a month when things have calmed down. I tried it again on my face and a couple spots on my arms and the same thing happened, with even redness and itchiness on my arms where I applied it. I guess I am allergic to this product.

WHEW!
I think this stuff is working but for this item maybe a little added fragrance is in order. It smells like squashed bugs when you put it on. the smell dies down in a fe minutes but I won't use this on my face. The gel formulation isn't smelly at all. What gives?

save your money
This product is a complete dud. I bought both the lotion and the gel and used as directed. Nothing in over a 2 1/2 month time. Since it's over the 60 day return policy & I can't get any money back, I've began to use it for the age spots on the back of my hands since it's done NOTHING for my face and neck.
Paula has some absolutely wonderful products and I'm a huge fan of those........this one doesn't cut it for me.
