the best oil-absorbing mask IN THE UNIVERSE
Its weightless texture absorbs oil pretty well and cleanses easily. Also, It contains concentrated anti-irritants to reduces redness from acne and to prevent excess oil production caused by irritation. In addition, its various anti-bacterial agents help to prevent acne! I really liked her unique, clever formulation and was impressed by the results on my skin.. I'll purchase it again and again..

Disappointed
I absolutely love doing masks. I have oily skin so they usually leave me feeling refreshed and pampered. I love PC BHA liquid and a lot of her products so I decided to give this a shot and put my old faithful mint julep mask away. Washed my face then put a generous amount on. Stung, not a good sting, but an irritating bad sting. Left it on for the time suggested and washed off. My skin wansn't red or anything but didn't look as refreshed has it has with other masks. Blah. Didn't work
This mask didn't do anything for my skin. Except for the tingling when first applied, my skin felt and looked exactly the same before and after using this mask. It didn't do anything for enlarged pores or blackheads. Well, at least it didn't dry out my skin, the texture was kind of moisturizing actually. Luckily I only bought a sample to try. I Love This Mask!!
What's with all the screaming in the reviews? Its not like its burning a hole in your faces. When it goes on it stings and tightens a little but then I hardly feel it. This is the one product from Paula that I have purchased over and over again. That's not a negative commentary on her products, I just like to try other things she recommends or I just didn't have the funds. But this mask? I make sure to have on hand. My skin feels softer and clean. Pores look smaller and skin not as oily if used regularly.

I was actually quite sad that I didn't like this. With a name like it has, indicating perhaps that the carbon would 'suck' up any bad things left on my face, I was dissapointed that it was so uncomfortable for me to use. For the first 5 minutes or so, it stung like crazy. My skin felt fresh afterward, but nothing spectacular. I am still looking for a good mask to go with the rest of the PC products that I love. This mask is PAINFUL! It began stinging and burning the minute I applied it to the area around my nose and chin! I was so excited to find a mask that wouldn't "clog pores" and would absorb oil but I can't stand to apply it a second time! The only other option from Paula's Choice is a mask for dry skin, which I don't have. What a hassle. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review. I wanted to love this mask. I find the benefits to mud masks are great for my oily/combo skin and this one was suggested in for my skin type. But this mask HURT! Oooh it burns!!!

The reason I am giving this 4 stars because I only used it twice. However I am impressed enough to give a review. Recently I was hit with pimples on my cheeks and forehead. I was using everything to dry the blemishes. To no avail. I ordered this as a sample. I used it once before a night out and to my surprise it really did dry out my bumps. I used the rest and slept in the mask... Woke up this morning and it really smoothed my face and calmed the pimples. I was hesitant to use given what people said about the burning. I have normal/combination sensitive skin. The slight tinge lasted about 30 seconds for me. It was never uncomfortable. I have used other clay maskes and this was far the easiest to put on and take off. I have plenty of Paula products... But this is the first and that impressed me enough to give an immediate review. If you are being plagued with stubborn acne try this.

This really stings at first - then it cools
This mask really stings at first! For the first 2-3 minutes it burns and I want to wash it off! But if you can just get past those first couple minutes then a cooling sensation comes. It doesn't peel or aggravate the skin. But it does leave it red so I only do it at night. I have used lots of masks and this one gives the most noticable results. My skin looks and feels amazing after using this - which is saying a lot because I have very sensitive, fair skin with large pores, ruddiness, and acne. But after using this, my skin has a healthy rosy glow, with invisble pores and a super clean fresh feeling. I LOVE THIS! I got a sample of this from a friend, so I will definitely be buying a full tube. And don't give up on it - because the first time I tried it, I washed it off because off the burning feeling. But now that I know it is followed by a cooling sensation, it's not hard to get through those 2 minutes. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review! Great mask!
This is a great mask! It draws out all of the icky stuff on my face and leaves my skin very soft and smooth. I highly recommend it. You should know that your skin may look worse at first because it is working on drawing out all of the impurities, etc. I use this once a week and have great results!

This mask stung a lot around my cheeks and nose, a lot. It also left a black sheen to my skin even after repeated rinsing. It did leave my skin soft, which is why I gave it 2 stars. LOVE IT!
I got this masks less then a week ago and i have used it three times. I love the way it makes my skin look and fell after i use it. I do fell the sting but i dont care about that because i fell that it really WORKS! thank you! Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review. Stung -- can't use
I really like the idea of a mask, but I can't use this one -- it stung the first time I used it, and I used it twice more to see if that would go away. It didn't. Okay, so admittedly the first time I used it it did sting. However, it disappated after the first few minutes and the second time (and following times) I used the product I didn't experience any stinging sensation at all. The results are amazing. I have awful combination skin- blackheads and huge disgusting pores on my t-zone and dry flaky skin on the sides of my nose. Switching to the Paula's choice regimen has completely cleared up my face. People think that I was blessed with great skin- thank you Paula's choice!!! This mask works wonders on your pores.

Better than a facial!
I've tried many a clay mask in the battle against my blackheads, but they always fall short of their claims. Not this one! Though I will concur that there is an uncomfortable tingly/stinging sensation for the first 5 minutes of wearing the product, similar to a chemical peel, the sensation dissipated once the product started to dry. And let me just say...I've never seen a topical product or pore strip have such amazing effects! Seriously, once I removed the mask you could see that the blackheads littering my nose had dramatically diminished. I don't think painful extractions from a dermatologist could even have results like this! Very impressed and will definitely be purchasing again.

I like all the Paula's Choice products that I have used thus far but I couldn't even tolerate this mask for a minute - it burned so badly I had to wash it off immediately! I have had this mask and ventured out to try the recommended Skinceuticals' Mask. No, no, no, I should have just stuck with Paula's. After one use, the Skinceuticals made me itchy and dry into the next day. I have never experoenced this with Paula's products! They are the best!!

I had high hopes for this mask, since I use every other product in the Skin Balancing line.
It stung my skin when I used it. I've tried it twice, thinking that maybe the first time my skin might have been sensitive that day. Both times, it just did not feel good on my skin, and I don't think it actually did anything to help balance it. In fact, I broke out after using it. I have oily, sensitive and acne-prone skin and wanted a mask to add a special treatment. Let's face it: most masks made for my skin type have menthol or sulfur in them, and who needs that? I purchased this mask despite the bad reviews and prepared for the worst. There was a slight tingling sensation, but not to the point where it warranted washing off. The tingling subsided after a couple of minutes. This mask rinses very well and has a bit of a creamy consistency. My skin was soft afterward, but just a little dry. I followed this up with my Hydralight toner and I'm good to go!

Great for Blackheads
The Carbon Mask makes a noticeable difference in clearing blackheads and reducing the appearance of large pores. I use it only on the t-zone area about once a week. The tingling/burning sensation others have talked about is mild and only temporary for me.

Big fan of most products, can't use this one

Carbon Mask is Awesome
I just used my sample pack of the carbon mask and absolutely loved it!! I understand some people are having burning sensations but I did not experience any of that! I know it must just be differences in skin and just for the record I have light olive skin that tans easily and does not generally get sun burn. It is slightly oily around the t zone but other than that fairly dry. I don't know if that might help in determining who should or should not use this product. If everyone could comment on their skin type in their posts it may help the research department to figure out who should and should NOT be using this particular product. My skin looks fantastic and I love Paula's!!! Thank you

Works For Me
I used the carbon mask for the first time last night. Usually by now (2:30 in the afternoon) my face would be an oil slick, but it looks great today. There is the slightest tingling sensation when the mask is first applied, but it was gone within seconds.

Wonderful
Most masks do very little for me, but this one is the exception: it is great for my oily/breakout-prone skin. It does a fantastic job of calming and softening my skin; I am delighted with it. Yes, it stings at first, but the feeling fades quickly, and I would just conclude it's probably not a good option for those with very sensitive or non-oily skin. One minor quibble: the bottle states the mask "rinses away easily" and this could not be further from the truth! I have to rinse for several minutes to get it all off. Still, I am thrilled with this product and wouldn't change a thing about it; it's definitely the best mask I have ever tried.

i guess the key is to get a sample and see how your own skin reacts. i got a sample, but a very thin mask on and waited 15 min. I was shocked at how smooth and soft my skin is and a blemish I've had for almost a month dried up overnight and completely cleared by the morning. could NOT be happier.

I am in the same boat as many of the other reviewers. Upon application this mask burns intensely. Not just a little stinging but full out burning. I do not have sensitive skin either and I love all of Paula's other products. But this one needs to be reformulated. Extreme burning should not happen.

I am a die-hard Paula devotee, and I adore all her skin balancing products EXCEPT this mask. It STINGS and gave me an awful rash all over my face. I've read a lot of similar reviews about this mask- this product evidently could use reformulating!! However I am giving the product a 2 for making my skin feel very smooth afterward. But the smoothness was not worth the rash!

Great Stuff!
This mask is definitley different from ALL others I have tried in the past. Most masks make my super acne prone skin break out, but this one made my existing acne noticeably smaller and less red and irritated immediately after use. I gave it a 4 because yes, it does sting/burn a big for the first 20 seconds or so, but it fades and that is when you feel the cooling sensation. This product is definitley worth a try...it does wonders for me!

Oh my. I received this as a free sample with my order - tried it tonight for the first time. I do NOT have sensitive skin and have never had issues with products burning - WOW, as soon as I started applying this it began to sting. I thought I'd see if the stinging diminished over time - no chance, after about 30 seconds I was literally running back to the bathroom frantically to get it off. Now my face is bright red and blotchy. What the heck is in this?

Best Kept Secret
Boy do I wish that other customers would not have experienced "burning" when using this product. I feel that this is one of Paula's best kept secrets. It is a core product for me and one I go to when I need to smooth my skin or recover from stress. If I had more time in the morning, I would apply this before m-u application daily. It makes for a great m-u finish.

Burns if you are using retinols
I used this mask twice so far. I noticed that on the areas of my face where I use Rx retinol gel, this mask burns. On the other areas and on my neck, I had no problem. It did help my blackheads be less apparent and my skin felt softer and less oily. So if you use retinols or do a lot of peels, this formula may be a little harsh for you.

Great mask...but it STINGS!
A very unique mask with a great feel. However, it STINGS to high heaven! The goods news is that it only lasts for a few minutes, then it feels very cooling. A few of the reviews make the same claim regarding the singing sensation. Is Paula planning on reformulating this mask?

Cold sores
I know this may not be relevant to everyone, but I wanted to share that if you are prone to cold sores (herpes), I would not recommend this product. After using it, I immediately broke out badly. Not just once but both times I used it. I guess it is drying/irritating in a way that just doesn't work for my skin (which is not otherwise sensitive).

Stings, but Works
It does sting immediately. It just does. BUT if you can tolerate it for just a few seconds, that sensation goes away. I keep it AWAY from the eye area, as the skin close to the eye is extra sensitive. I find it helped my acne, redness and inflamed areas, tremendously. I'm a first-timer with Paula's products and I'm VERY pleased overall.

Not good
I'm with the other unhappy reviewers on this product's poor performance. I have normal skin, which occasionally gets a little oily. At those times, I like a good mask (typically clay) to dry up the excess oil. I trust your product line, so I tried this. BIG mistake. This product burns and stings like the devil. Maybe someone with very thick, oily skin could use this without irritation, but not a normal woman. It does nothing to dry up excess oil, either, so far as I can see. As Paula herself often says, if a product is tingling or burning on the skin- you probably shouldn't be using it! Please, please, please replace this product with a clay mask or something equivalent for normal-to-oily skin.

Sensitive skin
I have sensitive oily skin. Based on a review I read, I only bought a sample. Something in that Skin Balancing Carbon Mask really burned my skin. I had to wash off the product right away.

Amazing Results After One Use
Tried just a sample of this mask and wore it overnight. I was surprised at the noticable reduction in lines in the morning but shocked when the effect lasted 3 weeks!

This is the first product I have tried from Paula's Choice. I have a very sensitive skin and was a bit concerned reading the reviews that many people got burned. So, I ordered a sample. Luckily, I did not experience any burning irritants. Just within the first try, I get such a great feeling on my skin. It's the feeling that you don't get from other masks. Like reviewers below, the second I put on this mask my face screamed in protest. This is the most painful mask I've ever used! Did nothing good and left my already sensitive skin tomato red. Never again!

I love Paula's Choice, but not this one.
I've been using Paula's Choice for 2 years now with wonderful results, and I got this Carbon Mask as a sample. I burned/cooled my skin horribly. Never had that with a mask before. I could hardly bear to leave it on. Please please change this product!!

Skin Balancing System!

Worst experience
If there was an option to give this product a 0 star then I would do that. I have been thinking about using something from paula's choice line for days. Recently when there was a free shipping offer I decided to try this mask. For what ever reason I thought this will be the ultimate mask for me. Thank god I was smart enough to order samples at first. The moment I put the mask on it felt like my face is on fire and I have been using chemical (spa and at home) peels, at home micro-dermabrasion for years, nothing ever made me feel this way. I am 33, have mildly oily skin, use spf 30+ sunscreen whether inside or out and I dont break out ever. At first I thought that the burning sensation will subside but those 12/15 minutes was almost painful. After I washed of my face it kept burning for minutes. I will never buy or recommend this product to anyone.

impressive
i received this as a sample and tried it ten minutes ago. it was a bit tingly/uncomfortable upon application, but that faded away. after 10-15 min, i washed off the product as per instruction, and noticed my skin had less discoloration and was oil free (yay!). definitely not bad :)

Try a sample size!
This mask does wonders for redness in my skin, and it is, for me, the best product to calm minor breakouts. (The Skin Recovery mask, by contrast, makes a great moisturizer.) Paula's skin care line is truly one of the best.

The mask was...just there. I have combination skin/sensitive skin and this product did not do anything for it. It did not irritate, yet did not offer any improvement either.

Stilling looking for a mask
I found this mask uncomfortable to use. It would almost burn and did not feel properly formulated.
I have very oily skin, and not sensitive. Maybe I should return it.

Superb Mask For Oily Skin
This mask is a superb product (if you are not allergic to the clay in it, which I am not). I have skin that tends towards greasiness and blackheads; this mask eliminates all my extra oil for the rest of the day and helps to clear out my blackheads. It leaves my skin feeling very soft and clean and "perfect'. I'm glad that the clay ingredient doesn't irritate my skin - I notice I have zero problems with all the highest concentrations of BHA/AHA exfoliants, etc., so if you have "tough" skin and lots of blackheads/oil, this mask will likely be wonderful for you.

I have tried many of Paula's products. Most of them have been good but this is not one of them. It made me break out the first time i used it, and the second, and the third. I have stopped using it since.

Very uncomfortable
This mask was very uncomfortable. There was an odd cooling/burning sensation that was unbearable. I did not return it in the 60-day timeframe simply because of the costs to do so. But I probably should have.

Love this!
I have combination/oily skin, and I've been using masks for years. This mask, unlike nearly every other I've used, doesn't have fragrance, doesn't burn my face, doesn't dry it out, and doesn't make it break out. When I wash it off my skin is softer, the oil is sopped up, blemishes are less inflamed, and any red areas are calmer. Best mask ever!

This product is okay. I don't love it or hate it. If I feel like haveing a "spa night" I will put it on for a little extra pampering. I think it is as good a mud mask as any. I suspect it makes me break out a little afterwards- it may be a coincidence, nothing awful, but I don't feel the need to use this product very often.

I don't have sensitive skin. I have never had a bad reaction to any skin care product...until this one. This mask had a very uncomfortable burning sensation. I'll never try this product again!

Wonderful
I ordered a few samples of this mask when I bought my usual BHA lotion. At first my face turned very red and burned... I have very sensitive skin... but then it calmed down and I was able to wait the 15 minutes. When I rinsed my skin glowed, but wasn't red and irritated... just soft. I use this mask twice a week and love it!

Not up to Paula's standards
Paula, your reviews and advice make my skin look so amazing that I was absolutely shocked at how bad this was! For someone who discusses the research on skin irritation and how "cooling sensations" are a sign of skin irritation, I can't understand why you would provide a product that does exactly that. Everything else you recommend for sensitive skin helps keep my skin looking great, but this product is a terrible thumbs down. Paula, please fix this product, because I really want to love it!

Good & Bad...
I have to preface this review with the statement that I use and LOVE most Paula's Choice products. I had to settle on a rating of 3 because although this mask works fairly well and makes my blackheads look much better, it DOES cause a definite burning sensation! It is disappointing on the back of the bottle it claims that it will cool without irritation!

I wish I could use this product !
For me this was not of the best experiences. I had an immediate burning sensation. I thought maybe give it a chance and it might go away. Boy was I WRONG. Within a couple minutes I had wash it off, I must be allergic to something in the product. I get a bit concerned when it comes to extracts in products. Thank god for the samples. It's too bad because I haven't had any trouble with any of the other products I have purchased.

Burns!
I usually love Pauls'a products and use her line religiously. This makes my face burn like crazy. I have tried using over 6 dozen times now over the past year and I finally give up. I have to rinse it off after just 10 seconds it burns so bad.

I've been using this in conjunction with the 2% BHA liquid and I see and feel a dramatic difference in my skin; my stubborn blackheads are gone, and I really feel that this mask pulls out the oil and the bacteria that sits in there with it. All this without stinging or that tight feeling after.

I have to say that I use and LOVE most of Paula's products, but this mask makes my skin burn and break out like crazy afterwards! Perhaps I am allergic to something in it. I wish there was another mask offered to normal to slightly oily skin!

Skin Balancing Carbon Mask
This mask stings upon application. The third ingredient in this mask, bentonite, is listed on page 21 of your 7th edition Don't Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me as an "irritating ingredient to avoid". It is disheartening to find a known irritant in your products. :( Please reevaluate this formulation.
Bentonite is a drying clay that can be irritating to those with dry or sensitive skin. It is used in Skin Balancing Carbon Mask for its excellent oil-absorbing properties. Awesome mask
Best mask I have ever used! I have oily skin and yet I am not into mask so much. This is because I found most of them don't necessarily help my oily skin. Most make my skin feel too tight after masking and eventually my skin make more oil. Not this mask. I was pleasantly surprised the first time I used it. My skin look and feel smooth. Skin Balancing Carbon Mask strikes a balance between oil-absorbing properties and hydration, which allows this mask to absorb excess oil without drying the skin or making it feel tight.
