Other than smelling and feeling a little odd immediately out of the tube (the smell goes away quickly), this leaves my skin matte for hours, and minimizes the appearance of the pores on my cheeks and nose. I'll wear this both under foundation, or by itself with sunscreen. It wears well in all the of weather, humidity and temperature conditions I've worn it in so far.

Put off by the texture
I tried a sample of this serum, and if it weren't for the texture, I would consider buying the full size product. In theory this should be the perfect serum for me as I have oily, acne-prone skin. This serum did not cause any breakouts nor more oilyness, but the texture was just too strange (I know, I'm picky). As other reviewers have said, the oily liquid part separates from the clumpy solid part. Is there any chance that this product will be reformulated?? Doesn't mattify well
I bought this because I wanted to use a serum in the day (I use the Resist one at night). This one is much lighter than the Resist one and the ingredients are great. The reason I rated it 3 is because it made me look and feel oily, which is not good. Even though the product states that it will mattify and help control oil, unfortunately, it did not for me. I've read a lot of reviews and it appears as most people get a mattifying effect, but for some reason, I don't, and my skin isn't that oily. It's a pity. Even though it is full of good stuff, if it doesn't feel or look good, it's hard to use. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review. Wow!!!
I suffer from extreme oily skin with severe breakout due to a medication I have to take. Getting off the meds is not an option, so I have been using Paula's Choice to topically counteract the devestating skin reactions of this medication. This serum is one of the best and most powerful weapons in my arsenal. I have tried to use prescription vitamin A derivatives, only to discontinue use because of severe irratiation. This serum is gentle enough to use twice a day and helps my makeup stay pretty and matte. The oil absorbing ingredients have made a huge difference in the amount of surface oil break-through I have by mid-afternoon. Outstanding product!!! Try it!!!

This serum has changed my skin in a matter of days. I have very pale creamy skin, but HUGE pores that drive me insane. They constantly fill and have acne, and the pores are easily visible even through makeup, its awful. A few days of this and they simply SHRUNK to almost invisible. Even where my sunglasses sit is clear and creamy. I'm so happy I bought it, I'm a believer and I will be buying this FOREVER!

Love this stuff...but the consistency not so much
I love this stuff. It's reasonably priced and has quality ingredients. I feel like I'm putting vitamins on my skin and it smells kind of like vitamins too! It's light, has a silky feel and doesn't clog my oily skin. I would prefer if this would come in a pump or dropper container. I also wish the consistency wasn't so "jelly" like. Sometimes I squeeze a bit onto my finger, and it's so slick it has fallen off onto the sink or my clothes, and then it's wasted. I also have to be careful to squeeze the tube slowly, otherwise air comes out and it splatters. Other than that, great product. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review! Using the Mattifying Concentrate Serum after moisturizing provides a perfect finish. It removes all traces of shine and and leaves a translucent matte finish and it's a perfect base for foundation. It makes my skin feel smooth as a baby's!

i use the balancing cleanser and toner. the gel bha exfoliant, this serum and the matifying moisturizer. this regimen has not only helped with my breakouts but also made my skin the softest and brightest it has ever been. i use this serum mainly around my eyes and at 41 i have no wrinkles. i have NEVER had such amazing skin. not ever in my 20's

Can't do without it
This product does exactly what it says. I've been using it for a little over 3 months now and the few small worry lines I had on my forhead are amost completely gone. I apply it both day and night right before my moisturizer. When I use it in the morning it is a great primer for my makeup. Everything just goes on smoother after this. Plus side is that it does not make my sensative/combination skin act up or break out. The only downside is the packaging. I make sure to shake it right before applying to mix everying back together because it will seperate. But if you squeeze to hard on the tube it will shoot out and you end up wasting product. Packaging aside, I'll still repurchase this when I run out.

Lightweight and effective
It feels like nothing at all, I often have to check if I missed anywhere. I was hesitant at first, particulalry considering it's feather-light, silky texture, but now it is a staple in my routine. You do have to smooth it on quickly, but it's great. Silky and mattifying. Thanks Paula's Choice team!

Had this product for a couple of months now and despite all my shaking has separated. The smell doesn't bother me - I think it smells like a vitamin tablet, full of antioxidants! Smell dissipates quickly anyway. The previous reviewer must have ordered the resist antioxidant last time. I have both and use the retinol product at bedtime and the vit c resist before my sunscreen in the day.

Awesome Feel!
I came upon this site after reading an article that mentioned Paula's Choice, specifically the Hydra Lite facial cleanser. Ordered it, arrived within TWO days of shipping and has been a fantastic product! The "non-lather" has been awesome for my skin. I also paid the $1 for a sample of the Skin Balancing SAMC Serum and loved that as well! Have already ordered the full size product for that AND also received that in TWO shipping days!The scent for the serum is so fresh & clean and the matte finish does so well under my mineral foundation. Have been using these products for almost 2 weeks and love them (along with the Skin Balancing Moisture Gel & 1% BHA Gel samples)and my skin has never looked and felt better! Really works
I wasn't sure about trying this serum due to the mixed reviews, but I decided to find out for myself. After 3 days of use, my skin looks clearer, the redness is reduced, it's smoother-I really see a difference in texture, tone and clarity. However, I don't feel it does anything to reduce oiliness. I still had to blot and use powder a few times a day just as I normally do. And I feel that the serum does come out of the tube liquidy and somewhat separated unless you shake it first. It takes a few tries to get used to applying it and if you rub it too much it will start to form little balls. None of that bothers me, though, because I didn't buy it for mattifying and once you learn how to apply it, it's not a problem. The facts are, it really helps my skin look its best and thats all that matters to me. The Olay Regenerist serum made me break out in little whiteheads so I was afrais to try another serum but so far so good. No breakouts and no irritation, just beautiful, smooth, clear skin.

Silky, nearly weightless, soothing, and clarifying
My skin has recently become more prone to breakouts (perhaps due to a warmer climate in my locale) so I decided to incorporate a few of the Skin Balancing products into my regimen, namely the cleanser, serum, and sunscreen. My skin is afflicted with redness and sensitivity, and I find the Skin Balancing Serum to be particularly soothing. Its weightless texture seems to calm my skin and prevent dryness without feeling heavy. The first time I applied this was at bedtime and I could have sworn my face looked clearer in the morning (which was confirmed by compliments I received from family the next day) and the appearance of my skin seems to improve each day. I find the tube packaging has a tendency to dispense the product unevenly (sometimes too much, sometimes too little) but I try to remedy this by gently shaking the tube before removing the cap, then dispensing it slowly to avoid waste. I then carefully distribute/rub the product between my fingertips and pat it over my face starting with the eye area and places I shave (I am a male) before patting the remaining product over my cheeks and t-zone. Overall I am very impressed with Skin Balancing Serum and will recommend it to anyone seeking ultra-lightweight moisture with skin-boosting ingredients.

I like the other antioxidants better
What I like about this one is that it is not shiny on the face as other antioxidants that paula sells but it doesn't keep it's consistency....it becomes liquid in the bottle over time. I guess it's an ok option if you want to use it during the day under sunscreen...then you don't have to worry about shine.

This is really lightweight, and it does mattify, but at first the color had a light gold/orangey tint to it, which to me was the antioxidants in the product, but after a couple weeks it is completely clear! I shook the product before every use, but now feel it is just a mattifier. won't purchase again. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review! The plant extracts can change color over time but please be assured that Paula and her team have tested the product at various stages and they confirm the ingredients are still just as effective when the product goes clear and separates a bit as you have mentioned, and they contain natural extracts, their color can vary from batch to batch and fade at different rates. Unfortunately, this is exactly why most other companies use synthetic coloring agents to cover up the variations. We choose not to do this.

It Works Wonderfully for Me
I am useing this product every nite when I get out of the shower and finish toning with the extra Strength Acne toning liquid. It does smooth and matify my oily, porous skin, I like the retinol and antioxidants it has in it. I am 50 yrs old and also use the Resist Super Antioxidant serum also, but have stuck with this one because of the smoothing and matifying properties. I feel it is also reducing my acne, and sun spots on my cheeks when I use it.

Terrific product! I used up my sample and have to say this serum really helped my skin look its best. I noticed my skin healed faster and it really relieved some readness around a couple acne marks that are still healing. The serum has the texture of a light souffle gel, goes on silky smooth and it helped my skin stay matte for longer than usual (although not in the worst heat or humidity, but nothing could beat that except maybe being on Accutane). The ingredients are just fabulous and the price point for this quality is remarkable-it's more than the best drugstore products like Olay but considerably less than most anything else you can get outside the drugstore.

After two weeks of daily use, my skin looks healthy and less tired. True, the texture is a bit off-putting. It can slip off your fingers, and I always end up using about twice as much as I intend to. But the fresh, weightless feeling is unbeatable, and worth any initial uncertainty about the texture. No problems with break-outs (and I have very finicky skin; unexpected products like the Skin Balancing Toner make me break out). This serum is also great for accelerating the fading time of post-acne marks. Overall, very impressed!

Great mattifier, if you apply it right
VERY good mattifier, but the texture is a bit strange, like a chalky gel. I must pat it into my skin, because if I rub it a circular motion, it balls up and I must brush it off with a towel. Other than that, I'm happy with it.

Love this product! It goes on like a dream and dries to a matte finish fairly quickly. I have combination skin and do not have a problem with it later in the day with extra oiliness. In defense of the packaging, I think the tube it comes in is just fine. The hole is quite small and the ingredients have very little chance of escaping. Even if it came in a pump it has to come out somewhere. Also, I must comment on the fragrance. They are raw ingredients. Everything in nature has a smell to it. A lot of companies will put heavy fragrance or essential oils in their products to mask the smell. Which is bad. This product does not smell offensive at all!! I want to thank Paula for doing the right thing for our skin.

Lightweight, Silky Serum
I just returned to this product after using a heavier serum during the winter months, and I forgot what a huge difference it makes for my skin. I originally bought it as a primer for foundation, and it far out-performs pricier department store primers and offers a superior blend of antioxidants at the same time. It preps skin for a smoother makeup application and helps it wear better on the skin, which I love, but that's nothing compared to what it does at night. It smooths like silk over my skin and when I wake up, my skin (especially around the eye area) is smooth and soft. It dramatically erases fine lines around my eyes. In every way, this is an exceptional product for an extremely reasonable price. I'm granting it a place as a permanent fixture in my skin care kit.

Dont believe the haters! This is the BOMB
I am very very breakout prone, and have oily skin. I was really worried this would break me out, but I've been using it for almost two months, and have nothing but better skin to show for it! Paula please don't change this formula a bit, nothing makes my makeup go on better, and my skin looks FABULOUS! Don't listen to the haters, they can go back to Clinique! More antioxidant serum for the rest of us!

Enjoying this product
I've been using this for almost two weeks and my face texture has gotten much smoother and even complected. I have been using it twice daily, but have developed a few painful cysts on my cheeks so I am going to reduce to every night only and try Paula's new Shine Control product during the day instead and see if that clears up the problem.

A great product!
The only reason I'm not giving this a 5 is because the smell is a bit unpleasant and the texture was a little strange feeling. Aside from that, this has a great amount of retinol and really helped to control oil and breakouts for me.

Overpriced & Not Worth It...
There are plenty of other products that can be used instead of this serum, have tried & sued it on myself, did not work well for my already oily skin. It exacerbated my oily skin even more under also a Paula's Choice moisturizer, have tried to like these products but they just don't work for me. Plus, the serums can be at a tad cheaper price.

Finally found it!
This is what I use for moisturizer. I have oily skin that also tends to get dry patches. This smooths everything over without making me break out. I also use it as a primer under Loreal's Infallible foundation. While Infallible is the only foundation I've found that doesn't turn my face into an oil slick, it's also very dry and hard to blend. This serum helps it glide on without looking cakey. For me, this is a triple threat product - serum, moisturizer, and primer.

Great moisturizer, doesn't mattify
I love using this on my face, it is silky and goes on super smooth, and it doesn't make me break out anywhere when I use it. Not sure where the mattifying comes from. I noticed no mattifying at all. Great moisturizer though!

Bedtime and morning
Now that I'm nearing menopause, my super-oily skin is becoming combination skin and this product is all the moisturizer I need for my face and neck after BHA at night or before sunscreen in the morning, and it's never shiny on my nose. Very soothing, so it decreases redness.

Great Product!
I really like this product. I have combination skin. I find it provides enough moisturizing that I don't need to apply any additional moisturizer except around my eyes and other drier areas. When used with the 8% glycolic acid, sometimes it balls up and rolls off my skin. That is why I am taking off one star. If you can improve on the "balling" issue, that would be appreciated. Otherwise, great product. The mattifying properties are appreciated, too!

I am a true believer in retinol, but I have found many retinol products contain really heavy moisturizers or are prohibitively expensive.
This product replaced my foundation primer, and works wonderfully to smooth the skin under my makeup. My skin is improving daily.

I was very disappointed with the product. At first the product was extremely runny and most of the product ran off my hands when trying to apply it. It now has become gel like and has an unpleasant, rancid odor. I have stopped using the product and will no purchase it again.

One of the best Serums on the market!
Being in the cosmetic world for over ten years and a Licensed Esthetician, I have seen everything! Paula's products really do work, they deliver because the contain great ingredients at the right levels. Mattifying serum is great, nice results, make sure you shake well before using it, or you'll think its oily(its not). Also, just use a tiny amount of the serum. This is a great product at a great price!!!

Oily and Heavy
I got a sample of this and I finally got around to using it after several months. When I opened the package the serum had turned clumpy. I managed to put it on my skin. It had a strange, old odor to it and it left my skin feeling oily and heavy later in the day. I must have really oily skin because all of Paula's mattifying products still feel oil on my skin. Like her mattifying spf 15 moisturizer and sunscreens for oily skin are not matte on my skin at all. The antioxidant serum is another one that does not work on my oily skin.

Directions state this product can be used under the eyes. I ordered a packet, used it once on my face and under eyes, the next day the skin under my eyes was red and puffy.

Used to love it - now not so sure
Initially I loved this product but not any more. The ingredients seem to separate out and if I do not vigorously shake and squeeze the tube before application I either get an oily liquid in the early days or a viscose gel near the end of the tube. Some tubes have been worse than others. I also notice a difference in colour and smell of the product between batches. Not so certain of the quality control of this product.

Great for oily skin
Thanks, Paula! This product actually WORKS on oily T zone and is the product so many people are asking for. It seems to provides moisture for oily skin while calming out of control oil production, and is the ONLY thing I have found that doesn't cause breakouts while doing so!
Using it on very oily places actually lessens the oil and makes pores appear smaller. Using it religiously gets results!

I have completely fallen in love with paulas choice. Although I do believe that skincare is trial and error and finding what works best for you. I have been using this serum for about a month and it has been great. My skin feels like soft healthy skin. I like the way my skin looks to the point I do not wear foundation quite as much as I used to. I feel like with this product my skin is getting the things it needs to look healthy. I love paulas choice products. It is all about finding what works best for your skin. This one works well for my oily combination skin.

Silky & Wonderful!
I have been reading Paula's books for many years, and am a wiser consumer becaue of her. After years of putting it off, I finally ordered the Skin Balancing sample kit. Her products are wonderful! I especially love the Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate. The texture is absolutely weightless and silky, and it keeps my skin matte (but not dry) for hours. This is a great base for foundation as well. The texture can be a bit inconsistent, so just squeeze the tube carefully. I also use the Resist Antioxidant Concentrate when my skin is feeling dry; the texture is thicker than the mattifying but another excellent product. I love that Paula's products use straightforward ingredients, are fragerance free, and are full-disclosure. I am using the serums along with the 2% BHA Liquid, the Mositure Balaning Gel, and the Carbon Mask. Even my husband and father noticed my clear, even-toned skin. I have quickly become a devoted customer. Thank you Paula!

Disappointing
This slides off of my fingers and is difficult to apply. It then flakes off in little pieces when I apply my sunscreen. I don't know if I need to mix it or somthing, but this just doesn't work for me. I am a big fan of many of your products though, Paula, and appreciate the opportunity to write a candid review!

I am a fan of the super antioxidant concentrate but feel I can only use around the eye and too oily for all over my face so I gave this Mattifying formula a try. It is the BEST all over face produce I have ever used. It feels slick to the touch but goes on so matte. It's like it has some magic ingred.

Bad Choice
The only credit I can give this serum is for its antioxidant properties. Otherwise- it is just awful. The texture makes it diffficult to apply smoothly; I kept having to use "a little more." Then, when I applied mu makeup, I had to fight with little loose pieces that appeared as I used my foundation sponge. I actually threw this product out- I really disliked it.
I had and have been using the Super Anti Oxidant Concentrate. My skin is so oily, and I was hoping for an improvement.
I use all of the other Paula's line skin care products that are recommended for oily-prone skin. They are all great. But this one- well, at least try the sample first (currently N/A!).

Not for me
I love most of Paula's products, and so I was intrigued to try this product when saw many good review about this. I bought the sample size. I have oily & combination skin. My T-zone is more oily and has more whiteheads (cyst acne) and blackheads than the rest of my face, and would occasionally breakouts during that period of the month.
I found that this product gives immediate smooth feeling on my skin (notably on my neck and cheeks) but gave more oily look, feel and oil production on my T-zone! I am glad I only bought the sample size. I threw the remaining of the sample after testing it twice with only a sample dab each time. I could not stand the oily face and shiny look.

Love the Vitamin A & Retinol in it
Been using PC products for 1 1/2 now. My skin looks great and I can go out without makeup. This one product kept separating in the tube each time half of it got used up. So I would squeeze out something that looked yellowish along with something that looked clear even after shaking the tube. I stopped buying it after about 3 tubes and switched to the Resist Anti Aging Serum which does not separate in tube when half used. But now I miss the Vitamin A and Retinol. Please recreate this product with all the ingredients from Resist Anti Aging Serum and throw in the Vitamin A and Retinol. Paula knows her stuff,but this product needs some twitching.The product comes out and literally just slides off your fingers,then goes on feeling so oily,and really the matte finish is short lived.Please make something like Cosmedicines Medi Matte SPF 20 without the sunscreen,it keeps me matte all day and goes on silky as well.

Nice texture, but a bit messy
I can't believe how non-greasy this product is - when you first get it out of the tube, you'll think it's going to grease you up. But it doesn't! It sinks in quickly and leaves your skin feeling satiny, not slippery. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that you really need to shake the tube a lot before using it - otherwise you'll end up squirting out a watery liquid before the product comes out, which can be messy. (I guess that would be the water separating from the product???) But, as long as you give it a good shake, all is well. :) I have to confess that I don't use this product as often as I should, so I can't really comment on whether I notice any beneficial changes to my skin.

GREAT AS A PRIMER
This product has great ingredients for your skin and it's priced at a point that allows me to use it generously. I used the Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate (normal to dry) before bed because my skin is on the dry side. Then, by mistake I was sent the Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate (normal to oily). Paula's Choice corrected my order and I put the Mattifying Concentrate in the drawer for months. I ran out of my antioxidant so I tried the mattifying and it made my skin feel like silk. Not dewy like my first choice, but really smooth and soft. My makeup just glides over it. It's the best "good for your skin" makeup primer out there today. As long as your skin doesn't react negatively to silicone, it's definitely a keeper.

Breaking out
I have tried this product twice now and I seem to be getting the same results - more breakouts. Every time I stop using it my face clears up. Unfortunately something in this product does not agree with my skin. I will continue using the Balancing Cleanser, Balancing Toner, 2% BHA liquid and Extra Strenght Blemish Fighting Solution as I have a very good results with these products.

It kind of burns around the eyes but the wierder part was when I started using it I started breaking out on my face in little pimples all over (not normal). Retinol Free?
I've been using Paula's Choice skincare products for a couple weeks now, and wow my skin is starting to look amazing! I was hesitant at first and had low expectations, but have finally found products that deliver. I'd love to try this product but am not able to. Hopefully this range will soon come out with an antioxidant concentrate that is suitable for oily skin but retinol free for those who are either pregnant or sensitive to this ingredient.

This is really great! Leaves my skin really soft, soaks right in after about five minutes, is really moisturizing so I do not need an extra moisturizer. You have to shake the tube before applying or it will get runny though.

Horrible - Why is this labeled as Mattifying?
Firstly this product has an oily consistency and goes on your skin oily It makes my combination skin alot more oily than it is I used a tiny amount as indicated on the labeling however there is no getting over just how incredible inadequate this product is I have never submitted a review on any products in the past whether good or bad But I had to about this purchase because it is horrible and does not live up to it's claim by far I only gave it a one since it was the lowest score available In my opinion it does not even deserve that

This product is absolutely incredible. The texture is like nothing I've ever seen before. It's definitely not a heavy, creamy formulation. It goes on DRY!! Thought this was the best formulation for my oily skin but it is unpleasantly thick and and I cannot use it anywhere close to my eyes (contact lens wearers beware. Disappointed!
Loced this product initially, but after a few days it broke me out in cysts. I've since discovered that my skin reacts this way to any "cyclo" silicone ingredient, which unfortunately prevents me from using many Paula's Choice products. I would love to see some alternative formulations for those of us who cannot tolerate these ingredients.

What is the difference between Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate and the other Super Antioxidant Concentrates?
Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate contains special dry-finish and absorbent ingredients that make it ideal for normal to very oily skin. Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate contains several plant oils and a greater variety of antioxidants known to be especially beneficial for normal to very dry skin. Our original Super Antioxidant Concentrate is an "all skin types" option that supplies skin with several antioxidants, primarily stabilized vitamin C.
Is the texture of Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate similar to Paula's Choice Skin Balancing Moisture Gel?
No. Skin Balancing Moisture Gel is a silicone-in-water emulsion and has a light, water-based gel texture while the Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate is a non-aqueous serum that has a completely different feel.
Does Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate decrease the appearance of pores?
The silicone polymers in this product float over skin and minimally "fill in" pores, creating a smoother surface. The effect (as with all such products) is temporary and how long it lasts depends on your pore size and skin's oil output, as well as other products used at the same time. Overall, this product is not capable of reducing pore size, but it's conceivable this effect will be noticed and can be prolonged by pairing it with a matte finish foundation and powder.
I use a prescription product with tretinoin (i.e. Retina-A, Renova, Tazorac). Since Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate and Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate contain retinol, is it OK to combine them?
We are not aware of any contraindications surrounding the use of tretinoin and retinol and believe this combination is beneficial to skin. Because this question concerns a prescription drug, we recommend consulting your physician and following his or her advice.
