wish it worked better for me!
my sister has said many good things about paula's choice, so she told me to try this out. i have eczema and blackheads, and some hyperpigmentation from acne. i've been using it almost 3 weeks and haven't seen much of a difference as far as the blackheads go. it HAS however prevented me from breaking out as often and kept my eczema from flaring up. but i mostly purchased this product hoping it would help with my blackheads and i haven't seen much of a difference. i was probably better off with 2%. it is a good product, just not strong enough for me! :/

Not Gentle Enough for Very Sensitive Skin
I have sensitive but acne-prone skin and have been on the hunt for an exfoliating product that will suit me. I switched to this product from the 2% BHA (Clear Extra Strength Targeted Acne Relief Exfoliating Toner) which caused my skin to dry/flake even though I only used it only once every couple days/only a couple times a week, if that. I let my skin repair and restore fully and then attempted this exfoliant - the gentlest offered by Paula's Choice - only to have the same results in response to regular use (at first 2x a day, then, upon observing dryness/flaking, only in the PM). I'm pretty disappointed that I now need to look elsewhere for an exfoliant gentle enough to be used regularly enough for me to get the benefit of having exfoliation in my skincare regimen.

I heard many good things about Paula's Choice before, so I decided to purchase the 1% BHA Lotion Exfoliant.Unfortunately, it doesn't change anything to my skin at all, it's just a normal lotion to me. Skin Perfecting Perfection
Let me start by saying I had been using the 1% Gel for over a year.
I decided to try this just to add a little moisture to the exfoliation process I have been using this for only a week now and to my surprise WOW the difference in the Gel and this Lotion is remarkable.
The lotion absorbs much more easily, markedly reduces redness and evens out texture beautifully.
This is hands down now my favorite PC product. And I actually like the smell.

I have suffered from acne and rosacea for YEARS and have spent SO much money on cleansers, toners, treatments, prescriptions, etc. that didn't work. Even my dermatologist didn't know what else to try. I was literally almost in tears when I tried the Rosacea system from PC. I kept all of the receipts, thinking I would have to send it back (because nothing else I've tried in YEARS from everywhere else has worked).
WELL, THIS SYSTEM WORKS! I am so amazed. My skin cleared up. The texture is actually SMOOTH! (I have NEVER had smooth skin) and I honestly can't stop looking in the mirror at my skin! I have even avoided having family pictures made because of my skin. Now, I'm booking that appointment!

Smell is awful
I love all of Paula's products and won't use anything else now. I reordered the exfoliant when I ran out and I love the new packaging but couldn't believe how bad the smell was when I used it. I will tolerate it since I love her products and I know there must not be anything wrong with it with if it came from Paula. Want to LOVE!!
I have been using the 1% bha lotion for probably a year and a half now. I ordered a new one before I even came close to running out because I never want to be without it! (my skin looks wonderful!) I recently ran out of my current (old packaging) bottle & started using the new one. LOVE the new packaging...tolerating the smell because I know adding fragrance is a no-no. However, my face turns beet red every time I use it now. =( I stopped & started several times thinking it was weather, hormone or food related. Still no luck. I'm in tears over the fact that I can't use this anymore. Is there something more gentle than the 1% lotion that I can use? Not sure what the "new" ingredient(s) is(are) that I am reacting to. I am still using & loving the skin recovery cleanser, RESIST hydrating cleanser & RESIST barrier repair...but still want to use a bha product. Any recommendations? Please help! Compromise for Combo Skin
This product is awesome! I initially bought the AHA gel to clear my combo skin, but it awakened the sleeping beast and caused me my first breakout in years!
Customer service was gracious enough to send me this to try instead of the AHA and a I couldn't be happier!
The lotion is light and absorbs easily into my skin. Unlike some other skin serums/treatments, this did not leave an oily shine. My skin feels soft and hydrated after using it. Best of all, it really does work; it cleared the breakout I was having in record time.

Keeps skin healthy!

New Formula Reeks
I've been a loyal Paula's Choice customer for years, so when it was time to replace my 1% BHA lotion, I didn't think twice although the packaging was different and some of the reviews were mixed. I received my shipment today, applied the product and realized how badly it smells. I can't seem to wash the gamey smell off of my hands, which makes me think my face smells just as badly. It's disappointing that a product I've happily used for years and recommended to others has become so unpleasant. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review. Love the old formula...new one not so much
I am a long time user of Paula's wonderful products and I hate writing this, but I feel I need to voice my opinion on the new formulation of this product. I have used the previous formulation of the 1% BHA lotion on and off for years. I have normal to dry skin that gets an occasional breakout here and there on my chin area. The previous BHA lotion took care of any breakouts I had effortlessly with no irritation whatsoever. The new packaging looks beautiful, and I like that the product no longer clumps around the lid like it did on the old bottle. Although the formula has changed, I ordered the new product expecting it to behave similarly to the old product. I was wrong. The new formulation just does not agree with my skin way the old version did. although it feels nice on the skin initially, within a few days of use, my chin area started to break out and my forehead developed tiny red bumps where there were none before. The cucumber smell does not bother me, but then again, I never really noticed a smell when I used the previous version. I ended up using a sample that I had of the 2% BHA liquid to spot treat the breakouts on my chin and they cleared right up. I keep trying the new 1% BHA thinking that maybe my skin just needs to get used to it, but the results just have not been good. I would love to see the previous formulation return with the new packaging, then it would be a 5 star product! I still love all my other Paula's Choice products, though and will continue to use those. I am just sad that I can no longer use this product. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review. My skin never felt so soft/silky before!
I first bought the 2% BHA liquid exfoliant and found it wasn't the right product for me. The Customer Rep. suggested me to try this 1% lotion instead, and had sent me samples to try out.
I felt in love with it right away! The change was amazing, instant and visible! I can't believe how much as little as an exfoliant has improved my skin texture like this. I'm absolutely a believer and can't wait to explore more of Paula's products!

Cannot get over the awful smell
I got this as a sample. I was using the gel which seemed to be working fine, but I wanted to try the lotion. Bad decision--the smell is AWFUL! After 5 minutes I couldn't take it anymore so I had to wash my face again. I've read in the feedback that it is fragrance-free, which I think means that no specific scents were added to the product. Horrible smell
I am so sorry to have to write a negative review but this new formula is so disappointing to me that I had to speak up. I have been a loyal fan of Paula's products since the start of her company and this was perhaps one of my favorite (can't live without) products from the line. However, the smell of this new formula is so nasty to me that I washed it off immediately and will never use it again. For now a facial skin brush will be my exfoliant and

Great New Formula!
The new formula is fantastic! I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews on the smell of the product. The Cucumber Extract is what is causing it, and I really like it! I have the old BHA 1% Lotion formulation and a sample of the new one, and being able to compare them like this really highlights how the new formula is superior. The more fluid texture absorbs into my skin better and doesn't harden and clog in the opening of the container. With the addition of (I'm guessing) more anti-irritants into the formula, this new lotion calms my skin far better than the old formula. Returning to the scent, the new formula's scent is much better than the old one. The Cucumber Extract masks the smell of any of the other ingredients and is far more appealing than smelling a mixture of all the raw ingredients, like in the old version. Please keep the new formula!

Didn't work for me
Wanted to love this but no matter what I tried I would always wake up with flaky skin after using this. I gave it a solid month before reviewing because I was hoping my skin would adjust to it but it did not. In retrospect I probably should have started with the 1% lotion. Bring back the old formula, please!
I am disappoined with the new formula.It has a very unplesant smell and a runny texture. It should be clearly stated in the product description that this is a different formulation, not simply repackaged. I will need a different exfoliant because I can't get over the smell! couldn't tolerate the smell

It was recommended by the company that BHA is the best choice as an exfoliant for my ultra sensitive skin. Was afraid to purchase without sampling it first. I am so glad I didn't waste my money on anything but the sample. The smell is so bad I actually almost gagged when I applied on my face. Any recommendations for a gentle exfoliant with a neutral fragrance. I get frustrated trying to find fragrance free, non-irritating products as I have so many allergies to fragrances. Help! Terrible smell
The new formula has the terrible same smell of hydralight infusion moisturizer. I think is the cucumber extract. The old formula was very good, but this one is stinky and you can smell this for hours after putting on the face. Disappointed
I have been buying the 1% BHA Exfoliant for the last few years and have had no complaints. It seems to work just fine on my skin type. I recently ran out and ordered it again and received it in its new, fancy packaging. Like I said, I have never had issues before, but this newest shipment smells horrible! I can't even put it on my face because that means I will have to smell it throughout the day. It smells chemically and plastic-y. All I think of is this new packaging has affected its odor somehow. I am now nervous about spending money on this product again because I don't want to risk getting something that smells this bad again. Usually smells don't bother me, but this is unbearable. I love Paula's products and want to continue buying from her. I hope that this smell issue can be resolved. I was left with no BHA exfoliant
I have recently ordered the new formula. While the old 1% BHA lotion was my cant-live-without product, this one wrecked my skin! Besides the horrible stench, it made my cheeks burn and my forehead blister! Since there are no alternatives in the market, I was left with no BHA. Please bring back the old formula. Cannot tolerate new scent
The texture of this lotion is unchanged, but when I went to apply my new sample, I was overwhelmed with the new fragrance. I know from reading other reviews that it is not perfume, but cucumber extract that is supposed to be soothing. However, I am so sensitive to fragrances that I could not put this lotion all over my face, I just put it on my chin. I have been using the one or two percent BHA lotions for many years, I do not know what I am going to do now. I do not even know if any similar products are even available. Weightless Body Treatment is better
This product wasn't the best for me. I tried it like it -even bought it twice! It does exfoliate but I found it didn't clear my skin as well as I hoped. It goes on smooth but in a few hours it makes my face really shiny and almost oily looking. It does not feel irritating but it does make my nose and cheeks too rosy, which I then cover with more makeup. I've had the same results with other BHA products, except I recently bought the Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA and LOVE it. Definitely give that one a try if this doesn't seem right for you.

Better than the gel for me!
I had been using Paula's 1% BHA gel, but my skin was rough and irritated, so I tried the lotion and it's just fabulous - very soothing and not at all irritating. I ordered the little Moisture Boost kit and my skin has felt so much smoother and hydrated that I decided to order the whole line. It's great for winter when skin is drier.

AMAZING!
I was skeptical about using an exfoliant, as my dry, sensitive skin had been irritated by exfoliants (scrubs and lotions) in the past. This, however, is incredible and unlike any other! My skin used to break out several times a week (with acne and/or rosacea bumps). Since starting to use this product 4 months ago, the breakouts have completely stopped! Different smell
I've used the previous formulation of this wonderful product for years. The new formulation has a significant number of ingredients that are new, and the smell is different. That's the only reason I've given it four instead of five stars. I wish Paula's Choice would provide a more detailed explanation for the addition of these new ingredients and reassure me that the smell is normal. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review. Skin Perfecting 1% BHA Lotion Exfoliant
The 1% BHA Lotion Exfoliant has a new packaging and a new silkier formula which are the pro side to this product. The cons: the old bottle was 4oz vs new bottle 3.3oz. The old formula was fragrance free, new formula has a scent that is unpleasant. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review. The new formula is still fragrance free. Cucumber extract has been added which is a potent antioxidant which is an excellent anti-agent ingredient. The main reasons some of the products have been put in new packaging is usually because we find more suitable containers that are either better at protecting the formula, are easier to use, or are better for the environment. Sometimes it is because the cost of producing the product has gone up significantly. In those cases, rather than raising prices and keeping the same size we have felt it makes more sense to make the container smaller which has the added benefit of helping the active ingredients stay stable. A larger container may last longer but the active ingredients don't remain as potent over time. We wish we could keep the same formula for every product but ingredients are discontinued often times which causes us to reformulate products and with the advances in cosmetic ingredients we try to provide the best state of the art ingredients in every formula. 1%BHA as an exfoliate
I've used this product and had no results as far as getting rid of a few bumps around my mouth and chin area but decided to continue using it to exfoliate. The new packaging (bottle ) looked too cumbersome so I chose to order a lot of sample packets. A packet lasts about three days, after opening it I simply put it in a plastic bag so that it doesn't dry out. With these new packets I've noticed a different odor. I am in my 60's and have been using Paula's products for a few years and am happy with the ones I use. Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review. Not for dry or sensitive skin!
I have dry, sensitive skin. I had been using the 2% body treatment on my face but decided to try this instead since it is for facial use. First off, the smell was horrible!- similar to the smell of vomit. Second, it burned and left my face flakey and tight. I will go back to the body treatment as it was not irritating or drying, nor does it have a horrific smell. I understand the concept of fragrance free, but this was unbearable.

Why didn't I listen a long time ago?
This works so much better than I expected. It didn't dry my face out like a lot of exfoliators do. I usually break out when any new product is introduced to my brief skin care routine, and this one did cause some very small pimples. However, I stuck with it and they subsided within a few days. The payoff is much smoother, more radiant skin. My makeup goes on smoother, and I feel like with continued use of this product my acne scars will begin to fade. My face does feel a little tighter in the mornings so I use the Hydralight Moisture-Infusing lotion in the mornings under my sunscreen and it goes away. This combo has been such a success!! I remember reading a long time ago about Paula's recommendations for BHA exfoliation and I sure wish I had listened then! I am working my way up to the 2% and believe I will see even better results!! Perfect for Daytime
I use this in the morning (2% lotion at night) and it doesn't make me greasy. I have no problems with it under my mineral powder makeup. I've been using benzoyl peroxide for years now and while it's great at keeping acne at bay, it makes my skin flaky...even though I have oily skin. So flaky oily skin is not the look I'm going for. This and the 2% have definitely helped! I hardly ever get flaky, my old acne spots disappear much, much quicker, and my skin feels so much smoother. (I also wear a moisturizer and sunscreen on top of this.) Love it!

Love the new packaging! Very sleek and modern and enjoyable to use. You're probably expecting a deluge of complaints about the smaller amount of product, but I actually appreciate the downsize to 3.3 ounces. I travel a lot, and usually rely on sample packets for my exfoliation routine during trips. This requires a lot of planning ahead. Now that this product is carry-on size, I have one less thing to worry about!

Didn't Work
I love most of Paula's products. I tried the 2% BHA lotion several years ago for about a year and it didn't work. I tried the 1% BHA and again didn't work for me. I have white bumps around the chin area, not whiteheads, don't know what they are. I use RetinA plus Paula's AHA Glycol and still cannot get rid of these white bumps. I'll end up going to a dermatologist in order to get them removed. I don't have a problem other than on either side of the chin below the corners of my mouth. It sounds like you may have milia which do need to be removed by a dermatologist as they are genetic. You may certainly keep using the BHA in order to keep your skin exfoliated. Can't stop touching my face!
I have light, rosacea prone, sensitive skin and I was hesitant to put this on my face but I am so glad I tried it. I have used this product for over two weeks and, despite a little bit dryness (overuse of the product, maybe?) which I cleared up with a moisturizer, I have been so very pleased. No irritation and my skin is so soft. I keep touching my face--I know, I shouldn't but I have smooth, soft skin now! I recommend giving it a try.

Best BHA Out There
I have been using the BHA Lotion for years and would never give it up! I constantly recommend this product to friends as well. Some people experienced breakouts when they start using it, but if they stick it out they swear their skin is in better shape than it's ever been! I love the lightweight texture and that it doesn't dry out or irritate my skin. I can use it at night or during the day under makeup. The blackheads on my nose visably decreased since I started using this. I also love that I use BHA Lotion daily and my bottle lasts foever. Great product and great value!

Change is good!
I have sensitive combination skin and struggle with occasional mild acne and rough texture. My skin was irritated by fragrance and harsh scrubs. This lotion is gentle.It does not irritate my skin or make it break out. It tightened my pores and improved the texture with regular use. My skin is much smoother and I could not be happier.

Paula, where have you been all my life?! this is such a miracle worker for my skin! I wish I found this product 20 years ago! in 3 days, my skin was so smooth. no more flakes or red patches. my pores look smaller. at 49 years of age, I need all the help I can get. it is so nice to use, compared to the typical drug-store grainy, messy scrub. In love with this product
I rarely rave about products, mainly due to the fact that my sensitive skin is highly reactive. However, this product is rave worthy! I have been using it for a week & love it. I've never been able to say that about a product before after such limited use. This product is gentle (please note, it did sting slightly during the initial application) however I have noticed a reduction of redness and a radiant glow since using it. I love it!!

LIFESAVER!!! If I could have and use only one skin care product for the rest of my life, it would be this. I've been using this product for probably around 5 or 6 years now. Great Product!
At 53, with sun damaged skin and periol dermatitis (caused by a harsh AHA product from the dermatologt's office), I can tell you the 1% BHA lotion is a great product. I can use it without irritation (avoiding the derm-prone area) and have noticed a definite improvement in my skin. Very nice product if you want exfoliation and have sensitive skin! Just started using the 2% at night (it's pretty heavy for day time use).

Soothing!
I love this lotion. I can't use the gel too often because my skin is very sensitive and gets dry. So I ordered the lotion in order to alternate between the two but the lotion is my favorite. It's soothing and hydrating, while still effective in diminishing redness and keeping skin glowy. Since Paula recommended it on her radio show, I also use it once a week in my under eye area and it just looks brighter and smoother now.

Fantastic stuff
I recently ordered samples of cleanser, toner and this lotion. All of it is so wonderful I came back to order full size products. I am kicking myself for waiting so long to try this stuff.

I switched to this one from a 2% cause 2% texture was changed for some reason. Please, don't change this one too :( goes on smoothly...I apply this in the am under spf and then aha in the pm....and couple time a week I use antioxidants. Definately saw a lot less pimples once I started using these exfoliants and black heads disappeared. Skin is a lot smoother and color of my skin is a lot more consistant.

Wonderful Product
This lotion works wonders on my skin. I'm in my 40s and my combination skin was starting to look lifeless and feel rough. I also have minor rosacea (but no breakouts from it). After about a week of using this lotion, my skin started feeling so soft and smooth.

My favorite, but is it right for me?
Since I became a PC customer, this has been my all time favorite. It makes my skin feel soft. However, it does not do a thing for my overly abundant blackheads. I have them almost all over my face. I've tried the 2% lotion formula, but that irritated my skin. Am I not using the right BHA or do I need to use a prescription to solve this annoying issue? Any feedback would be appreciated.

BHA cleared milia
A post-menopausal woman shouldn't have to battle pimples and milia, but I do. On the advice of email contact with Paula's Choice, I started using the BHA 1% Lotion about a month ago. No breakouts since then, and, to my complete surprise, a stubborn milia on my lip line (of all places) suddenly just opened up and appeared on my washcloth while cleansing my face. That was after 3 weeks of using the BHA and Paula's Choice Cleanser. (I figured I'd have to have a facial with an extraction to get rid of the little whitehead/milia.) I credit the BHA exfoliation, something I had not been doing on my own. Now a huge fan of this stuff!

I love this product! I am 32yrs. old and I have used the exfoliants that you rub on and rinse off with all sorts of ingredients. I had tried them all. I still had dry, flaky skin around my mouth, forehead and nose. I use moisturizer twice a day and still had flakiness. I ordered Paula's 1%BHA lotion and I am thrilled! It has exfoliated the dry patches of my skin without irritation!! I use her moisturizer after the exfoliator and the results are wonderful. Worked best for me
I'm 35 and really LOVE this 1% BHA lotion. The 2% was too irritating for me and the gel didn't work well under makeup. The lotion is my fav because it almost feels moisturizing and disappears on my skin. I use the 2.5% Blemish Fighting Solution and don't always use a moisturizer except for the Skin Recovery under my eyes (which is a miracle cream for lines). I've always had to battle bouts of acne, but Paula's products have made a real difference. I can walk out to the bus stop without makeup and not be embarrassed. Thank you and DO NOT stop making this!!

nice product, lousy bottle
This seems to be a nice product. Although I have on;y been using it a week I like the results. Sadly the bottle is terrible quality packaging. After three uses it had creases in the thin and brittle plastic sides, it isn't easy to get the lotion out, and the words are wearing off, which is a bummer for the price.

It was the first time I used any exfoliant. As it was very good for my face and I had terrible pimples on my back I tried it there and it healed my back - opened my pores and everything dissapeared. Great! Now I switched to BHA 2% but I still think about this product very well.

Like the product, hate the packaging
Love the product, works well for my combination skin...But the packaging leaves so much to be desired like some of her other products. Sometimes difficult to get out and the printing easily flakes off on my fingertips - sorry don't want to put the ink on the my skin. The previous plastic bottles used by Paula's Choice a few years ago were so much better. This bottle also easily dents.

So far no irritation whatsoever but feel itchy sometime. Mainly around the nose. I still got blackhead around Tzone area. Not as bad as before but at least I don't need to extract it so often like I used to.

This is an amazing product. It absorbs very well, and doesn't leave a sticky/goopy film on my skin (like your 2% gel does). I use it 3 or 4 times a week at night, and my skin looks great the next morning. I also use it on occasional breakouts to tone down the redness. Paula, please don't ever re-formulate this product!

I used a sample and I love it. It absorbs quickly and I've noticed a change in my complexion. *(good way). I would definitely recommend 1% BHA to anyone and I am definitely planning on using this product as part of my daily regime.

I have been using this product as directed as well as the blemish fighting solution and have noticed that my skin is much smoother. As far as getting rid of blackheads on my nose I have noticed no real change and my monthly breakout which is the same spot every month still occurs even while making sure I apply product to that area. I'm going to finish the product because its too expensive to just throw away and maybe my blackheads will clear up by then. We'll see.

I've been using 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel for years, and it has helped with really bad breakouts, but my skin hasn't exactly been clear. After only a few days of using Paula's 1% BHA I can finally leave the house without makeup! My skin tone hasn't been this even since I was 13. The lotion is really silky. I might try the 2%BHA lotion when it's back in stock.

It's Just Okay
My skin still gets embarrassingly flaky with this lotion exfoliant. For such an expensive product, I expected more. Even the packaging is unsatisfactory; I accidentally dropped the tube from a metre high height, and the lid somehow snapped and broke right off. I don't even know how that happened, the lid was snapped shut... the packaging could be better.

I can already see the difference
I am slowly trying to wean myself off of ProActiv and switch to Paula's Choice products. I started using just the 1% BHA lotion about 3 weeks ago to see how my skin could handle it, and it has been great. How should this product be used?

Your AHA (glycolic acid) products have a higher percentage than your BHA (salicylic acid) products. Does this mean AHA is a stronger exfoliant?
AHA products are most effective at a 5% to 10% concentration and BHA at 1% to 2% concentration. Think about it like making bread, the amount of yeast you need is tiny in comparison to the amount of flour you use but equally important to get the results you want. The percentage of effectiveness varies depending on the ingredient. Rest assured that the BHA products are not any less effective due to lower concentrations of the exfoliant.
What strength of BHA should I use? Will a higher concentration provide better and faster results?
Which BHA strength you opt to use should be based on your skin type and the stubbornness (or severity) of your acne or blackheads. The 1% BHA strength is a great starting point to see how using a pH-correct BHA can improve the skin's condition. The 2% concentrations can be a next level to see how that benefits skin.
