Great for acne prone
About Me Beauty Conscious
Comments about CLEAR Extra Strength Acne Kit - Complete Kit:
This product is great for acne prone skin. You need to do serious research before selecting products. Paulaschoice has taught me a lot about skin care. You need to be careful with using the benzoyl peroxide, use a tiny amount on only blemishes to avoid drying out or irritating. Sometimes it's not the product your using it but how you're using. Must have a balance
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Working for my 16 year old when prescription failed

About Me Minimalist
I ordered this for my 16 year old daughter after prescription retinol severely irritated her sensitive skin. Paula's Choice has helped tremendously. After a disaster with the prescription retinol we searched and searched for something that would treat her acne without the extreme irritation to her skin and Paula's Choice Extra Strength Acne kit. I was concerned that it might be too strong for her but we were desperate for a system to control her acne so went for the extra strength. It has worked well for her. Not all of her acne is gone, but it has minimized her breakouts, her blemishes are fewer and smaller and she has much less redness. I previously bought Neutrogena, Oxy, Clean and Clear, Derma Doctor... We are both glad we found Paula's Choice!

Not my Miracle Product
By Glad I Found Paula's
from Glendale Heights, IL
This may work well for others, but it didn't wasn't as effective for me. I used Proactiv for years and turned to this when it gradually ceased to be effective. I now know this is likely because of hereditary and now hormonal acne.I don't think this is a bad product; by contrast I think it's more effective and kinder to the skin than Proactiv was for me, only without the marketing machine (and annoying automated shipments) of Proactiv. I just don't think it worked for me, and now that I'm over 30 I wonder if there will ever be a cure for hereditary acne. It's a question of finding the most effective product or combination of products. To those who said it dried out their skin or caused more breakouts, with most strong formulations it's recommended to ease into using the products, starting by using them every other day or twice a week for the first two weeks and then tapering up. Or possibly sandwiching the benzoyl peroxide between layers of a moisturizer so it's not as irritating. Plus, salicylic acid is known to sometimes cause more breakouts by bringing up the pore-clogging materials to the surface of the skin. Sadly (hence the soapbox, because I want to try to share my experience in case it might help others), I have too much experience with acne treatments and every dermatologist will tell you it takes about 12 weeks to really judge the impact. =/ And if it doesn't help...and if you have ok insurance...from my experience, I'm really, really glad I did see a dermatologist. I honestly probably waited too long because I was scared and scared of the cost, but with prescription generic, I've found it to be equal in price to a kit and I can combine elements of over-the-counter and prescription-strength treatments to make more of a dent in my problems.I'll concede that if I had used it longer for the 6 weeks I gave it, it might have been more effective for me, at least on the non-cystic acne. Still, I was super-impressed with the cleanser (which I'm still using) and happy with the texture and price point of the benzoyl peroxide. I'd probably still be using it, if I hadn't switched to prescription-strength creams. I was less impressed with the salicylic acid liquid--I found it to be oily. Even though the extra product notes (don't remember where I read it on the website) state the texture makes it MORE effective for oily skin, I didn't appreciate the effect during the day. I also felt I was wasting a lot of product because it would seem to get over-absorbed into the cotton ball, causing me to use more product to get it onto my skin. It just didn't suit me.I still believe in the product though--so much so that I passed it on to my cousin (I said it was hereditary acne...) in hopes it'll help him.

I've been having breakouts for 2-3 years and there were barely any days that I remembered where my face was all cleared up. There was always a zit somewhere on my face. I started using this product about a month now and it is super great. After the first two weeks of using it, I started to notice my face became smooth and most of the redness from the zits I tried to get rid of are slowly disappearing. Also before my forehead had numerous clogged pores which build up tiny comedones. But after using this product daily for two weeks straight it became better. Now my face is smooth though it gets dry sometimes after using it but aveeno lotion keeps it moistraize. Overall I'm really glad I came across this and found Paula's Choice. I highly recommend this.

Be Careful at First!
from Anaheim, CA
I've been using this kit for about two months now, and I have to say, I am definitely seeing results that are far better than anything else I've tried! My skin is visibly smoother, clearer, and calmer. To everyone trying this out for the first time though, BE CAREFUL! I got a little too excited at first and ignored the instructions to ease into the treatments gradually, and oh man... my skin was so, so bad. My face was so irritated and dry that it hurt to touch, would peel away in layers as I tried to put makeup on, breakouts would flake constantly throughout the day, and my neck was so red and dry I had to cake on Aquafor to ease the burning. Definitely make sure you don't overdo it at first. If your skin isn't used to this much salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, start out by applying the two treatments one every other day, then once the dryness goes away, up your dose to once a day, then twice a day if necessary. Believe me, you will thank yourself when you realize how strong this stuff really is.

Made my skin worse
from Boulder, CO
I, like some of the other recent comments have been super disappointed with this kit. I wanted to try to 2-week trial before committing to the full kit but every time I ordered it, it was back ordered for months and then ultimately cancelled.I decided to bite the bullet and order the full kit because of all the raving reviews. I too have tried all the usuals: Proactiv, Aczone, OTC, Retin A, etc and thought this might be it. Well, sad to report that after almost 2 months of using it per the instructions my face is worse than before I used it. I've gotten breakout where I didn't even get them before, my usual break out zones are even worse and inflamed and won't heal, my skin is flaking so bad and the marks from my old break outs are even more red and noticeable. And to top it off my husband who is fairly oblivious to my skin woes commented "Wow, this is the worst I've ever seen your face."So I am officially stopping this product as it's had more than enough time to begin working. Disappointed in the results and that I bought the full size.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Not What I'd Hoped For
from Rhode Island
I had high hopes for this product based on the reviews. I bought the trial size and liked it enough, but still noticed some breakouts after the two weeks were up. However, I decided to give this product the benefit of the doubt and buy the full size. At first, I was happy with my purchase. My skin tone has actually improved dramatically, and I think my pores have gotten smaller, both thanks to the toner. Even my acne scars have seemed to go away. While I really tried to like this product, I couldn't get past the fact that my acne never went away. In fact, I think it may have gotten worse. One serious downside I found with this product is with the exfoliator and the spot cream--if you use it in one spot, you forever have to use it there. In other words, I accidentally went too far down my neck, and the next day after not using them both again, I had a zit there. I've never, ever broken out on my neck before! I can only assume my skin gets "addicted" to the product, which I've seen mentioned by other reviewers. My whole face is only on the mend now because I have decided to switch back to my Tea Tree cleanser. I wish I could return this product, but it's been longer than 30 days. I should have returned it after a few weeks of not seeing a difference in my skin. I really wish this product would have worked, especially since I'm now out a big hunk of cash.
The Only Product That Has Worked For Me
from Lakeland, FL
I've been using the Extra Strength kit for about 8 months and it's really made a difference in my skin. However when I initially started using the kit it severely dried the skin around lips/chin/jaw. This was surprising considering I have very oily skin. If you have dry skin be prepared to moisturize and tough it out for a few weeks!! Eventually my skin acclimated and I saw results. Beware of the exfoliating solution if you travel often. Without fail it will drip. Also, instead of using my hands and cotton pads I find it's best to cut up a paper towel and use that to apply the exfoliating solution.
The only stuff that works on my acne
By micellar water
from LA, CA
To preface, I've used everything on the market for my stubborn acne including "natural" remedies like black soap, castor oil and tree-tea oil. I even went on a birth control prescribed for acne. I tried everything short of Isotretinoin, which I have reservations about. These are the only products that work. I still have acne, redness and scars but it'd be a lot worse without them. The cleanser is amazing. Some may think you need a strong cleanser with bha but a gentle cleanser is better for your acne. It's good at removing oil and dirt but it's not good for makeup, even a tiny trace of makeup. I've tested this by wiping away 90% of my makeup and then washing my face and wiping my face with a white cotton pad with remover to see if there was any residual make up and there was. So wipe away all your makeup and sunscreen with a makeup remover first. The BHA is my favorite product in the kit. It really works on my type of acne. I have to say that I still have enlarged pores with blackheads. It's been years since I started using this product and I think they've actually gotten bigger but I'm not sure if that's due to age or one of the products I'm using. The bottle sometimes leaks so be careful about that. I use it on a cotton pad and swipe over my face. The Benzoyl Peroxide is my least favorite product in the kit. It works slowly on whiteheads but it's completely ineffective against cysts or hormonal acne. And my pores are larger than when I started so I don't know if this is a contributing factor. It also leaves my face irritated and red. The product tends to gunk up near the cap and dry which leaves a white, crusty residue.
