    Better than prescription retinoids adapalene!
    • I have been using Differin 0.1% for years and can tolerate using adaplene everyday. So I decided to replace it with this product every day for a week. I just could not believe how much smoother, softer, radiant my skin is in just one week! Wrinkle and dark spot is fading. Now I really wonder if I should discontinue my differin or layer them on top? Obviously this is better than Differin and I would not hesitate to stick with this product for years to come.

    Flawless skin in a bottle
    • I'm 18. Being an eighteen year old, you would think that I would be happy with how my skin is, but I'm not crazy about it. I started using this product through samples, which I bought three of (each lasting around a month of daily use) until I decided to take a leap and buy the full size. This product does everything. My face is clearer, smooth and even. My pores are shrinking by the day. This honestly is one of the best products I've ever bought. Try it, it's amazing!

    Great product!
    • After reading many positive reviews on this product, I decided to give it a try. I do suffer from acne, redness, hyper-pigmentation, and acne scars, and this product seemed like it could tackle a few of my concerns. After using a few times (every other night), I can definitely say that it has made the appearance of my skin look a lot smoother, clearer, and breakouts are at a minimum. I will repurchase after I'm done with my sample.

    great product
    • I was so excited when Paula's released this product and have been using for approx 3 months now. This stuff is comparable to prescription retin A at a smaller price tag whilst being far more tolerable. Follow the instructions to avoid adverse reactions such as dandruff like skin from overuse and there will be no issues. I apply every 3rd night alternating between 2% BHA, Resist Antioxidant treatments and follow with mousturizer. I wake up with glowing skin!

    Face demons beware
    • I got my first zit when I was nine, and have dealt with moderate acne since then. PC products helped, but I still wasn't satisfied with my skin. I have been using this for two months and my face is clear. CLEAR I SAY! Paula is my fairy godmother, and she has given me my magic fairy dust...in a pump dispenser. PLEASE never get rid of this product.

    • Surprisingly, I am able to use a pea sized amount of this spread all over my face once a day without any irritation. I even use it under my eyes with no visible redness and no flaking. I was concerned because I was not able to use PCs other retinol too close to my eyes without swelling and redness, that may be due to another ingredient though. I always follow with the Clear Skin Hydrator. I've just finished the trial size and I do believe that my wrinkles are fading!

    great retinol
    • This product is wonderful as most higher retinol concentrations are in a time release formulation. Perhaps adding hyaluronic acid or propanediol could deliver the product deeper to the skin? But other than that I would not touch this special formula! I only wish it had a daytime partner with SPF so I could use it 24/7. Results way exceeded my expectations!

    Just Okay
    • I was using a retinol 0.9 for a year, but was still breaking out. I bought this 1.0 in hoping it might work better, but it hasn't yet (it's been over a month, maybe I have to wait longer?) I still break out, more so than I was before (no redness or dryness though). Sadly I'm at the point where I may have run out of options for treating my acne as I'm already using so many different PC products! Maybe it works better if your skin isn't as used to it? It wasn't as good as I was hoping.

    not for me
    • I wanted to love this product but unfortunately my skin reacted badly. It is just to strong for my sensative skin. I followed the directions explicitly but alas I had to stop using it. I will stick with the Resist Retinol Serum which my skin loves and gives great results.

    great product and price
    • This retinol is a great product. Stronger and much better priced than previous brand I was using. I use this twice a day with no problems. It works great has already reduced fine lines and I've only used 1 bottle as of yet. The key to not having flaking skin is a very good moisturizer.

    Alternate with Resist Retinol Treatment
    • I love this. I have very sensitive skin, so I was weary to use it. I started off slowly using it just once or twice a week for the first month. I now alternate it (use it M-W-F) and use the regular strength Resist Retinol (use T-T-S) and on Sunday I do a copper mask and then use only Argan oil for night treatment and moisturizer. This works perfect for me. I use it in conjunction with a couple other PC and Michael Todd True Organics. Just be sure to introduce slowly.

    • Not even kidding... THIS IS AMAZING. Hands down worth the money - as soon as I start to see a breakout forming, I put this on at night and I wake up the next morning and my skin looks 100% better. I can go on and on about this product because nothing else will ever come close to it. if your debating on whether to put this in your shopping cart or not... DO IT. you will not be disappointed.

    Disappointed too agressive!
    • I am a PC fan for years and although I have a sensitive skin I can use without problems the AHA, BHA and retinol Resist line. I tried a pea sizes from this retinol treatment with my serum - just in case - and tipped it onto my face and cleavage... What a diseaster! The next morning I woke up with itchy red face and cleavage. Now 6 days later, my skin is still red and flaking! What is this? I couldn't try the sample size, it was not available then. I would like to have a refund of this one.

    OMG
    • This has completely transformed my skin. I have had mild to moderate acne, blackheads and very oily skin since I was 13, now 24. I use the Skin Balancing Cleanser, Toner and Moisturizer (PM), BHA 2% Liquid, Resist Ultra Light SPF Moisturizer (AM) and recently the Super Light Antioxidant Serum. I added this at night and the results have been AMAZING! After less than a month of using this my acne is essentially gone, fewer black heads, baby soft skin and much more even skin tone. THANK YOU PAULA!

    Wow!
    • Let me just start by saying that this stuff is amazing. I have been struggling with severe breakouts on my chin and cheek area for about 2 yrs. I tried every Rx topical medication. Nothing seemed to work. After using this product for about 2 months and making lifestyle adjustments (no coffee!) I am now almost acne free. Recently I have seen a dramatic reduction in my hyper pigmentation after continuing to use this product and my skin is doing much better. Awesome!

    Seeing a difference
    • For someone with sensitive skin, who has tried lots of products over the years, I'm surprised. My skin loves this. After a month of use (starting every 3rd day and now using every other day), I am starting to see the benefits described in Product Details above, and with very little flaking. I use Resist C15 & Skin Recovery Serum, with Barrier Repair Moisturizer in evening & Paula's SPF hand cream on face in the morning. 1% retinol has taken this regimen to the next level, no doubt about it.

    Great for acne!
    • This product is great for acne! I use this with Skin Perfecting 2% BHA, and this combination has worked very well for me! I used to use Retin-a, but this seems to work better for my skin. My acne is nearly gone, blackheads have improved significantly, and hyperpigmentation from previous breakouts has faded quite a lot. If your skin can tolerate this, I definitely recommend it! Just make sure you follow the directions!

    Not for super sensitive skin.
    • I really wanted this to work for my aging skin.(53 yrs.) However, each time I've used it, my face breaks out and is really irritated. I'm so sad. I had such high hopes. I love Paula's products 99% of the time. I guess my skin is just too sensitive for this particular product. I used it exactly as directed and even tried using less than directed but to no avail, my skin was just too sensitive. :( However, if you have skin that isn't ridiculously sensitive and showing signs of aging...try it!

    Update
    • Initially I thought I was smarter than the PC Team and ignored the instructions with disastrous results. After healing I started again SLOWLY. I mixed a small amount of this with my PC moisturizer and gradually increased. I have an oily T zone and dry cheeks, enlarged pores and blackhead prone skin. All issues have improved significantly. I'm asked frequently what I use on my skin and I'm thrilled to turn others on to Paula's Choice! I request TSA sizes of everything so we can take when we fly.

    Noticeable difference in brown spots
    • Have been using this for a few weeks and am seeing a noticeable difference in skin tone and texture. I'm 52 and have been considering laser treatment for remaining dark spots. Started with the trial on a nightly basis on the main problem areas (less frequently over the whole face). Got a peel in some areas after a few days, which dissipated. The brown spots are lighter and smaller wrinkles are invisible. Spots from previous breakouts are gone. No new breakouts which is a bonus. A keeper!

Maybe my skin didn't need it
    • I understand this is not a prescription strength retinol, however I was expecting to see some positive change, as I do with nearly all Paula's Choice products. My skin is young and almost wrinkle-free as it is, however it is combination-oily and I am breakout prone, so I thought this would be good (since retinols were originally used as acne treatment.) I used this every other night for about a month, and I didn't see a change in my skin. I ended up giving it to my mom, who seems to enjoy it.

    Not for me
    • This was not for me. I used a pea sized amount to start with this at just once per week. I did not apply around or near my eyes or lips. 1st two weeks, no problem. 3rd week, my eyes were swollen and the skin around them bright red & itchy. Rosacea flare up on my cheeks. I did have to see my doctor for a prescription to deal with all of this. She said it was an eczema flare up, something I have never had before. This was so unexpected. I use the Resist products with retinol with no problem.

What makes this product unique?
Combined with potent antioxidants, Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment is specially formulated to smooth and firm skin by helping to boost cell regeneration and stimulate collagen production. Its light, silky texture absorbs quickly and goes to work immediately to refine pore size, reduce deep wrinkles, fine lines, brown spots—it can even help breakouts, too! Licorice, oat extract and other anti-irritants help to minimize the irritation some people may get from products containing high amounts of retinol. You’ll be amazed at how much younger and radiant your skin will look and feel.

A consumer panel test showed that 92% of users preferred this retinol product over other, similar products they've used.

Who is this product for?
Those looking for a more potent product designed to preserve young skin and repair more advanced signs of aging, including: deep wrinkles, fine lines, and brown spots. In addition, Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment will help prevent blemishes and correct red marks from past breakouts.

DIRECTIONS: Apply a pea-sized amount after cleansing and toning, and then follow with your Paula's Choice serum and/or nighttime moisturizer. When first using the Clinical 1% Retinol, start with no more than three evenings per week, then gradually increase frequency to every other night and, finally, every evening as tolerated (measure how your skin responds). Avoid the lips, direct contact with the eye, and corners of the eyes. You may apply up to the orbital bone of the eye area.

May be applied at the same time as your AHA or BHA exfoliant, but pay attention to how your skin responds. If you notice signs of sensitivity, apply your AHA or BHA exfoliant in the morning and this treatment at night or reduce frequency of application of Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment.

Note: Some people may experience a delayed sensitized reaction to 1% retinol. Do not assume that if no reaction is seen after a few applications that you can apply this treatment more frequently. Pay close attention to how your skin responds and adjust usage accordingly.

If sensitization occurs (redness, flaking, tenderness, or drying of skin), reduce frequency of use or mix one pump of the Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment with your favorite Paula’s Choice serum or PM moisturizer. If sensitization persists, discontinue use. Protect skin daily with sunscreen rated SPF 25 or greater, or layer sunscreens (moisturizer, foundation with sunscreen, and pressed powder with sunscreen) if they are all rated SPF 15 or greater (and greater is better).

Do not apply this treatment on the same day as facial waxing or sugaring. Doing so may increase the risk of an irritant response.

TIPS AND TROUBLESHOOTING:

  • Can be worn under or over your PM moisturizer.
  • May be combined with any prescription retinoid product, including Renova, Retin-A, Refissa, Differin, Tazorac, or Avita. Discontinue or reduce frequency of use if irritation develops or persists.
  • Despite the many benefits retinol has, there is no single “best” anti-aging ingredient for skin. The retinol in this product is combined with other anti-aging ingredients for optimal results. The antioxidants and skin-repairing ingredients in this formula were chosen for their well-researched track records and history of being able to improve multiple signs of aging. We’ve also included potent anti-irritants to ensure compatibility with sensitive skin.
  • Remember, not everyone’s skin will be able to tolerate a high percentage of retinol, especially if you’re already using a prescription retinoid or other skincare products that contain retinol.

Detailed instructions on how/when to apply your Paula's Choice products can be found in our How to Put Together Your Own Skincare Routine article.

At what point in my skincare routine would I use Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment?

This nighttime treatment is best applied after cleansing and toning. If you use an AHA or BHA exfoliant, apply that first, then follow with Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment. If you use a skin-lightening product that would be applied next, followed by your serum and nighttime moisturizer.

If you are planning to use Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment with a prescription retinoid, apply the prescription retinoid after cleansing, toning, and exfoliating. Follow with Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment and the rest of your skincare routine. Note that combining this product with a prescription retinoid increases the risk of side effects such as dryness, flaking, and sensitivity.

How does Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment differ from the other retinol products Paula’s Choice offers?

The most notable difference is that Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment contains a higher amount of retinol than our other products with retinol. It is formulated for those whose skin can tolerate prescription-strength retinol but want an over-the-counter alternative or whose skin has more advanced signs of sun damage, including deep wrinkles.

The percentage of retinol needed for efficacy is generally between 0.01%–1%, which is quite a range, but further proof of just how powerful retinol is! For more on percentages of retinol in Paula’s Choice products, see our article Which Strength of Retinol Do I Need?

All of these products may be used with Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment or on their own, as each treats skin to a beneficial range of anti-aging ingredients.

Can I use Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment if I am using other Paula’s Choice products that contain retinol?

Yes, though you may wish to alternate rather than layer—this will depend on how your skin responds. You can also apply your usual retinol product (serum or moisturizer) all over your face and neck, then apply Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment to areas showing more advanced signs of aging: Crow’s feet around the eyes, laugh lines, expression lines, and dark spots.

Is Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes, although of course it always depends on how skin reacts. Our fragrance-free formula contains several anti-irritants designed to minimize any discomfort those with sensitive skin may experience from using a stronger retinol treatment; however, if skin is very sensitive it’s best to apply this treatment less often, perhaps twice per week rather than every night.

Is Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment suitable for rosacea-affected skin?

Yes, although of course it always depends on how skin reacts. There’s research showing retinol can help reduce the inflammation that’s an underlying factor in rosacea.

Can I use Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment if I have oily skin and breakouts?

Yes; in fact, the amount of retinol is akin to prescription-strength retinoids which are often prescribed by dermatologists to manage all types of acne. The silky-smooth finish won’t make oily skin look or feel greasy.

How does Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment compare to prescription retinoids?

This product contains retinol, which is weaker than prescription retinoids but, over time, produces comparable anti-aging and anti-acne results. A prescription retinoid may produce faster results, but it does so with the added risk of side effects like redness, flaking, and increased sensitivity.

A product with 1% retinol is more comparable to a prescription retinoid with 0.02 tretinoin (the active ingredient in Renova and Retin-A).

As with most well formulated anti-aging products, consistent use and daily sun protection will produce the best results.

Is it OK to use Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment with a product that contains hydroquinone, such as Resist Dark Spot Eraser?

Yes, this is fine. Apply the Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment first, and follow with the skin-lightening product, either applied to areas of concern or all over the face.

Is it OK to use Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment with an anti-acne product that contains benzoyl peroxide?

Yes. For best results, apply the benzoyl peroxide product to breakout-prone areas, allow to dry, then follow with Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment.

You may have read or heard that retinol and benzoyl peroxide cannot be used together for fear they will adversely affect each other’s stability.  However, what is often missing from these claims is any cited corroborative studies, and with good reason, because the scientific and medical research actually says the two ingredients can complement each other—which is good to know, whether you’re dealing with acne alone or the unwelcome mix of wrinkles plus breakouts! (Cutis 2009 & 2012, Journal of Drugs and Dermatology 2013).

Are there any products I shouldn’t combine with Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment?

No, it can be used with any other skincare products. However, if you’re combining it with more “active” products such as AHAs, BHA, skin-lightening products, anti-acne products, other retinol or prescription retinoid or prescription anti-acne products, it’s important to pay attention to how your skin responds and adjust usage accordingly. You don’t want to tip the scale in favor of irritation!

How soon will I see results?

From the first use, you will see improved skin texture and radiance. Over the next few weeks, these improvements will continue and you will begin to see a reduction in breakouts, red marks from past breakouts, brown spots, deeper wrinkles, and loss of firmness. After three to four months of consistent use along with daily sun protection (every day, no exceptions) you will see dramatically younger-looking skin with a smooth texture and remarkably even skin tone.

Why should I use Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment instead of one of your other retinol products—and why should I use one of those other retinol products instead of Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment?

You should use Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment if you feel your current retinol product isn’t giving you the results you hoped for after several weeks to months of consistent use (along with daily sun protection, a key component of any anti-aging routine). Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment is a more potent product designed to repair more advanced signs of aging.

You should consider using one of our other retinol products if you suspect your skin may react negatively to a stronger retinol product because attempts to use more potent retinol products (including prescription retinoids) haven’t been successful. Even then, you may still want to consider using Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment once or twice weekly, combined with your regular retinol product or used alone.

Is this the strongest retinol product I can buy over-the-counter?

No, there are a few companies selling over-the-counter products with higher amounts of retinol. Although those may seem intriguing, our in-house and external panel testing revealed that amounts of retinol above 1% came with a much higher likelihood of unwanted side effects such as redness, persistent flaking or peeling, and a sunburn-like sensation. Retinol is an active ingredient, and with any such ingredient you never want to tip the scale from benefits to irritation.

Is Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment safe for me to use while pregnant or nursing?

Due to the higher amount of retinol being closer to the strength of prescription retinoids (which are contraindicated for use while pregnant or breast feeding), we advise against such use unless OK’ed by your physician. If your physician does not provide a clear answer, it’s generally best to be cautious and refrain from use until you are no longer pregnant or breast feeding.

If I see great results after the first or second use, is it OK to begin applying Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment every night?

Because potential side effects from a high-strength retinol product may be delayed, we advise you to not apply this product nightly or every other night until you have been using it for 2–4 weeks with no signs of sensitivity (such as flaking, dryness, or redness). This is very important for those who’ve never used a high-strength or prescription retinoid product, as not everyone’s skin can tolerate stronger retinoids—and you never want to tip the scales in favor of irritation.

Remember: Only a pea-sized amount is needed for the entire face and neck. Using more than this per application will not provide better or faster results.
