    Lightweight armor against the sun
    • I just started using this a few days ago and love the no-fuss mineral formulation. It's lightweight, non-greasy, and dries to a soft matte finish that seems to lock in moisture on my face without making it feel greasy. I pair this with a pressed powder foundation with sunscreen and it feels like I've got the best UVA and UVB armor to face the day. I have finicky skin, often using moisturizers and serums for dry skin and makeup and sunscreen for oily skin. This is a keeper in my routine.

    Lovely sunscreen!
    • Great sunscreen! I have fair skin that is really sensitive and tends to be red on the cheeks. I am guy and I don't wear makeup, but this sunscreen really was like a nice "finishing touch" to my skin since it hid my redness (cheeks and even red breakout marks) and evened out my skin tone! It wasn't moisturizing enough for me though so I switched to the Skin Recovery SPF 30 which is better for me, but this product is still a winner!

    Stays in place
    • This is my favorite sunscreen because it stays in place. Others start to irritate my eyes. This product I don't have to wash off my face any earlier than I otherwise would.

    Not really shine-free
    • This is a fine formula, but I bought this specifically for its claim of being shine-free sun protection. It doesn't all sink it, and the shiny layer it leaves is exacerbated by my own oily skin throughout the day, leaving me really, really shiny. The greasy film also isn't great if you wear makeup, as it thins out your base a little and makes things streak easily. If you're a low-maintenance girl in real need of moisture, this might be right for you. If not, there are better options.

    Good mineral sunscreen
    • This doesn't break me out which is nice and doesn't leave the dreadful white cast on my deep skin tone but I find it does leave a slight grayish cast. It feel light on the skin and isn't heavy. I don't like the way it looks under makeup and it leave a flat dull finish.

    Coming back to this :)
    • I had this lotion for last summer, but was looking for something more moisturizing for the winter. I like the skin recovery for a nice moisture surge. Tried the resist super-light but was WAY too light. Usually use the cetaphil pm lotion for a non-spf, and coming back to get this again for day time use. Just the right amount of moisture with sunscreen. Although the lotion is very white, ir rubs in completely for my medium tone skin, and used through the summer when I was a few shades darker too.

    Worked for me
    • I first tried the resist spf 30 and that broke me out so switched to this one. At first it made my combination skin very dry so I started using a moisturizer underneath and now I like the feel and finish. Good under makeup as well. It definitely make my face shine free

Too matte for my combo skin
    • This product wound up being too matte for my combination skin (slightly oily t-zone with normal/dry cheeks). I'll be returning this one. The Skin Recovery SPF actually wound up being a great match for me. If you have a similar skin type, I highly recommend trying Skin Recovery - the mineral actives give a nice, neutral finish that managed to make all areas of my face happy. Get samples of a wide range of the PC SPF products, you never know what will be your perfect match!

    Good sunscreen
    • This doesn't break me out and is a good sunscreen that doesn't sting, either. (I've found some other sunscreen ingredients sting my face.) I also like that the texture isn't too thin like some other formulas for oily skin.

    doesn't moisturize, don't buy!!
    • After reading all the great reviews for this, I had high hopes for this moisturizer. What a disappointment :( This is one of the worst moisturizers I've ever used....it simply just doesn't moisturize!!! In fact, I think it may have even made my skin dryer? It was difficult to apply and didn't glide on like most moisturizers. After putting it on, my face looked white and then a few minutes later, I had white flakes of dry skin all over my face!! I really don't recommend this. waste of money

    Best SPF I've Ever Used
    • I have never found an SPF that hits all the things I've been looking for: it doesn't stink, it doesn't break me out and it doesn't leave a white cast on my face (and I'm pretty liberal with the application). An absolute bonus is the fact that it primes my makeup beautifully. I've always had a problem with my makeup slipping, even with a foundation primer, and this does the trick! I use it on top of another moisturizer, as it's not quite hydrating enough. My new favorite!

Finally, a sunscreen that doesn't break me out!
    • I've bought about 14 samples of this to be sure it wouldn't clog my pores and I'm so happy it doesn't! I've tried numerous sunscreens for the face and every single one has broken me out. This leaves my skin feeling nice & hydrated but not greasy, it doesn't feel heavy and doesn't make my skin super shiny. The only drawback is it leaves a white cast, but that's not a big deal to me since I usually put a thin layer of foundation on anyway. Definitely buying the full size!

    Love it.
    • I switched to this sunscreen because the resist super light sunscreen was breaking me out (and the tint was too much). I love this stuff. It feels so soft and light. It works very nicely as a light moisturizer and sunscreen. I have sensitive skin and this has not broken me out in the slightest. I can't see myself switching sunscreens any time soon. I will say that it leaves a white cast. I'm pale, so it rubs in and is hard to tell on me. However, it might be more noticeable on darker skin.

    • My skin is super acne-prone, but also gets very dry and sensitive in the winter. This moisturizer keeps the worst of the dryness at bay during the worst months, isn't greasy, and most importantly to me, does NOT cause acne.

    Lightweight and non-greasy SPF
    • This is my second time purchasing this item. I tried other Paula's choice sunscreen, but this was the only one that didn't feel like a typical SPF. It's easier to use than the new water light SPF and it doesn't leave a white film like her tinted ones, so I came back to this one. If you like Neutrogena sunscreen like I did, this one is better because it's not tested on animals.

    life changer
    • I'm not even exaggerating. This product has simplified my life and my routine SO MUCH. I have blemish-prone, semi-sensitive skin, and I used to own five different sunscreens that I would alternate based on what kind of day I was expecting. Now I just use this one. It works for ANY kind of day. It feels fresh and wonderful– never heavy or yuck. The best part: I can wear it EVERY DAY without ever breaking out. This is amazing.

    Love this product
    • I had 3 samples and just ordered a full size. My skin is oily, but at the same time I feel always dehydrated. I also have mild rosacea on my T-zone. I live in a sunny, dry climate. I use this moisturizer as a "base" after splashing my face with water in the morning and toning with the Hydralight Toner. It provides me with just enough moisture to feel comfortable, not too shiny nor too dry. Then I follow with a mineral sunscreen stick SPF 50 just on my reddened areas, then BB-Cream. Perfect!

    Good but not amazing
    • I've been looking for a moisturizer with sunscreen and I'm going to have to keep looking. It's not good, but it's not that bad. It feels heavy when putting it on but it dries to a matte finish. I don't bother putting on a primer after b/c it's winter where I live and it's cold and very drying on the skin already. I'm just going to use it for the sake of not wasting it but hopefully if I order again I can find products that cater to my asian, acne-prone, combo skin.

lovely but gets in my "creases" ~ ~ ~
    • And by "gets in my creases" I mean makes my makeup gather there! Which is horrid, just in case you are young and haven't experienced this. (Kinda more shocking than HAVING wrinkles is the dread of the makeup that can gather in there -- actually highlighting your creases aka wrinkles.) Alas the only good sunscreen that doesn't do this (at least on my skin) so far is CeraVu AM spf which no longer gets Paula's BEST award. I guess there's just a lack of antioxidants. Sigh.

    My Favorite Sunscreen
    • Hydralight SPF 30 is the best moisturizer with sunscreen I have used. And I have used other sunscreens from Clinique, Shiseido, Yes to Carrots, L'Occitane, and Paula's Choice. Those were decent to exceptional sunscreens, but Hydralight SPF 30 slightly edges out Yes to Carrots SPF 15 and Shiseido SPF 55, which were two of my favorites. The consistency is neither pasty nor thin, almost like a slightly thicker ranch salad dressing. Skin is matte and white streak-free.

    My favorite!
    • This is the best physical sunscreen I've ever used! As someone who can let chemical sunscreens near my face for fear of irritation and break outs, this moisturizer/sunscreen provides me with enough moisture while protecting me from the sun every day! It has a silky, creamy texture that sinks in well and doesn't leave me looking like an oil slick. It does leave a bit of a white cast, as most physical sunscreens do, but that doesn't make much of a difference for pale ol' me. Give this a try!

    Second ingredient: Ethylhexyl Palmitate!
    • My god, don't market this for those with acne-prone or oily skin! The SECOND ingredient is Ethylhexyl Palmitate! Super comedogenic!

    Customer Service Response
Replied on: Monday, January 05, 2015

Hello, and thanks for your comments! The answer isn't quite as simple as good or bad ingredients in regards to their ability to clog pores. Comedogenic is a marketing term that really took off in popularity—but it is meaningless as there are no standardized tests to determine the degree of “comedogenicity” of an ingredient.  Some ingredients are seemingly senselessly labeled “comedogenic,” as they are far too large (molecular weight, i.e. size standpoint) like the much maligned mineral oil, to fit into pores (like pushing a beach ball into a keyhole.)

However, the other side of this is the amount used of the ingredient in question. "Oil-free" or “non-comedogenic” has made many frightened of any ingredient that appears on a “comedogenic scale,” when in fact, how much is used is critical. If a product has a small amount of oil or an ingredient like ethylhexyl palmitate then there should be no concern, as the probability that this would "clog pores" would be very unlikely, like worrying about tripping over a blade of grass on the sidewalk.

These types of websites also ignore that many ingredients have more than one use, depending on the amount used.  Ethylhexyl palmitate, when used in small amounts, is an excellent ingredient to improve aesthetics of a product.  It can get complicated, and it's not as clear-cut as "comedogenic or non-comedogenic," which is repeated endlessly on the internet. There are more variables, but these are too numerous to go into here.

Needless to say, Paula’s Choice, more than any skin care company, would never use an ingredient that was a problem for the very skin type for which we have designed a product!  Any skin care product you purchase from Paula’s Choice that is recommended for your skin, you can be assured we have thoroughly considered each single ingredient and its effect on your skin type.

    My Holy Grail Sunscreen!
    • I've tried many sunscreens over the years, and overall, I have been very impressed with PC's sunscreens. I love how they offer all different types, because everyone has different skin types and preferences. This ended up being my HG sunscreen, because it is just perfect for my combination/ sensitive skin. It is not too matte for me, but also not too greasy. It offers a light amount of moisture, doesn't break me out or clog pores, and is soothing to my sensitive skin which is key for me. LOVE it!

How does Hydralight Shine-Free Daily Mineral Complex SPF 30 differ from Skin Balancing Ultra Sheer Daily Defense Broad-Spectrum SPF 30?

These two daytime moisturizers with sunscreen have different active ingredients. Hydralight Shine-Free Daily Mineral Complex SPF 30 contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, while Skin Balancing Ultra Sheer Daily Defense Broad-Spectrum SPF 30 contains a blend of avobenzone with other non-mineral sunscreen actives. The Hydralight SPF 30 is a light cream with sheer moisture, whereas the Skin Balancing SPF 30 is more like a liquid/fluid lotion. BOTH of these daytime moisturizers provide excellent broad-spectrum sun protection and treat skin to the beneficial antioxidants it needs to look and act younger. Also, both formulas were designed to work well under makeup (they won’t cause it to slip off or make oily areas look shiny).

Should I reapply Hydralight Shine-Free Daily Mineral Complex during the day?

For casual wear, meaning less than four hours total time out in the sun, it is not necessary to reapply sunscreen as you will be protected all day. If you are perspiring or just spending a longer period of time outdoors, this daytime moisturizer with sunscreen should be reapplied. You also have the option of touching up with a pressed powder rated SPF 15 or greater, such as Healthy Finish Pressed Powder SPF 15.
