    Awesome product, poorly functioning container
    • Fantastic product! I can really notice a difference after using it. Takes time to absorb into the skin, but I would still buy it again. I really Hate the tube though, it wastes product by pumping out too much and its a difficult pump. For how much it costs, the ease of the tube is an aspect that would keep me from using it everyday and even buying it again.

Thanks for your feedback! We are in the process of seeking new, easier-to-use packaging for this product. There's definitely a bit of a learning curve with the pump!

    • I love this product. It has reduced my milia. Only concern I have about this product is can it be used during pregnancy?

    Hello,

Thank you for your feedback. BHA 9 would not be reccomended to use during pregnancy. You can read more details about this and other products you can and cannot use during pregnancy here.

    I think it's working!
    • It's hard to know for sure after a couple of weeks using the sample, but I think I'm seeing a reduction in the size of a raised red spot in my inner arm. Stubborn blackheads around my nose also seem to be improving a bit. Using it on a couple of flesh-colored bumps, but not seeing any change with those... The consistency of the product makes it easy to target tiny spots; I dot it on with a fingertip and it clings, spreads just a little before it dries and disappears.

can i give it 10 stars?
    • Goes well beyond HG status! No way I can rave enough about this. My skin has (expletive verb, past tense) since my 20s. I'm now approaching 66, and between this beauty + the 2% salicylic, it's much, much better. I'm allergic to benzoyl peroxide + have tried every high end salicylic known to man (or Sephora!) Paula won me over with the info about the necessary pH for SA to work. Topical ATBX did NOTHING. This works! Goes deep. PC has THE BEST topical face care in the industry!

    saved my skin!
    • I had a frustrating breakout under my chin that consisted of whiteheads and cystic acne that seemed to come out of nowhere and lasted a year. I tried several different spot treatments, (in addition to other things) and nothing worked. I bought this, and after the first few days freaked out because all the whiteheads turned to larger pimples but I decided to ride it out - So glad I did! Within a week my breakout was noticeably calmer, and by two weeks it was COMPLETELY gone. So thankful for this!

    really works!
    • This is the first product that I have used that I have had a dramatic result with. I recently had a facial and filled out a skin questioner that asked what products I used. I put down Paula's Choice. The esthetician had also used her products and suggested this for sebaceous hyperplasia. I had a small bump that wasn't going away, but didn't know what it was called. I ordered this and within weeks of using this product, I can barely see it!

    Hummm????
    • I bought the entire kit: I do not like this , the packaging is a waste of my money, as I love love PC products and have spent tons of $$ of it , all worth it , this small product did not work for me, as well as I lot tons and tone of product trying to get just a tad out to use but with the design there was no way to do it , so all my $$ went pat on the face and part all over the place, allot of money down the drain on this one.. On a lighter note i am addicted to almost all of the other PC!

    Sebaceous Hyperplasia, yer outta here!
    • LOVE this stuff! I have a few spots of sebaceous hyperplasia (which I thought were just acne scars until I read about it on this site!) and after 3 consecutive nights of treatment they are already noticeably diminished! I used the BHA 9 as a spot treatment on top of the 2% BHA. So happy I got this product. Will absolutely buy gain!

Works on the hyperplsia & other ickies
    • I've waited 4 mos to review this product because I wanted to be sure. I have been using it plus 1% BHA gel, Resist 4% and the serum & the skin balancing cleanser, toner & Resist moisturizer diligently but this stuff, this miracle along with the Resist serum, is making the SH disappear. The flat ones are almost all gone (make-up completely hides them) and the chunkier ones are getting smaller and clearly breaking down in structure. I just ordered my second tube. *New users, stick with it*

    Works on small stuff
    • It's an investment but so far it's paid off. My trouble spots are my chin and around my mouth. Breakouts have been greatly minimized from using PC exfoliants routinely (BHA in AM and AHA in PM), but when I get the occasional blemish or clogged pore, a quick extraction followed by BHA9 has it cleared up by morning. I've also been using weekly all over my face in lieu of the 4% resurfacing product since that has been out of stock for a while. Love the state of my skin - thanks Paula's Choice!

Perfect for sebaceous hyperplasia & milia
    • Just a dab on milia makes them disappear. A dot on tiny, yet noticeable to me, sebaceous hyperlasia along with a touch of PC Clinical Retinol on top every few nights keeps these in check, too. Another great product to normalize extreme combo skin! Thanks!

Was super excited to try this!
    • I recently received this in the mail. Unfortunately, one of the samples came out of the little package they arrive in & there were grease/oily stains on the shipping box. I tried my other sample and it seems to work well. But unless I can buy it in a store, it's too expensive to risk losing some product during shipping for me. I'd give it a 5/5. It certainly does what it claims. Shipping is my 3/5 determining factor.

Impulse purchase, but glad I got it.
    • I have been using this stuff on a few troublesome spots that pop up at night, and by morning it has reduced in size and the swelling has went down a LOT. There will still be a small bump, but nothing like it was before. It's a small tube, so you only need the smallest drop for your spots. I do wish the pump was made a little better, because sometimes I feel like I waste product when you push all the way down. It dispenses too much! I would love to see them fix this, especially for the price.

    Ok product
    • I love Paula's products, though not a huge fan of this one. I really wanted it to work, and I have tried it a bunch of times, but I do not find that it reduces cysts (perhaps it is not meant to). I'm not sure that it affects smaller blemishes either, on me at least. It is too irritating if I use it more than 2 nights in a row, and my skin is pretty tough. Also the packaging is not ideal, too much comes out with each pump so it is wasteful. I probably would not purchase this one again.

    • This is interesting stuff. I don't think it really helps with a a big cyst or pimple on the face, but if you have those annyoing millia near your eyes it seems to gently do the trick. It also cleared up plantar warts on both my kids. I think I applied it once or twice on them. Toes were a peely mess, but then the warts miraculously disappeared.

Best thing EVER for my milia!
    • Recent convert, & learning how much & often to use, BUT, I've had a bad case of milia many years & this is the only product I've found that brings them to the surface! They almost want to jump out! A miracle! I still extract some, but so so easy now. Agreed, the pump is wasteful, but I have a perfume decant kit & transfer a bit to a tiny spray bottle & it works great! I keep it cool & in the dark too so problem solved! Think I'm on my way to being milia free : ) Yippee!

    Great Formula
    • I received this initially as a sample in my Birchbox. It got rid of the blackheads and milia on my nose in 4 days. Amazing! So I ordered the full size recently and I, too, am dismayed by the packaging. I did find a solution, however. I pump it into the sample vial I got in my Birchbox. No waste! I'm glad a repackaging is happening but it's upsetting to find out after you've already made the investment. I wish I had known in advance, I would've waited to order.

    Too liquide
    • Great product although too much liquid is coming out of the container each time and you can not control the amount. Therefore lots of product is wasted. Also since it is so liquid it cause dripping of the product and does not stay on spot. Over-whole it does the work but I had to already order another one because so much is coming out even if not needed and it is expensive.

Works well, but price and packaging keep me from repurchasing.
    • This does what it claims and I love how smooth it makes my skin feel and look. However, the fancy little dispenser makes it difficult to control how much product comes out. Also, at $40 for about 1/3 of an ounce (so $120 per ounce!) it's not as affordable as the other PC products I use. I've had success with a few products from other brands that cost more per bottle, but I actually get more product per dollar when I buy them. Let's put this stuff in less fancy packaging and lower the cost!

Thanks for your comments! We are working on securing new packaging for this product and are considering offering a larger size, as well. As this is a very concentrated treatment that does not require much product to be effective, we will be keeping the size less than one ounce.

    Pain & Gain
    • I use the 2% Liquid BHA & 8% AHA Gel for my closed comedones. It's been a few months & things have improved, but I have some very old deep clogs which didn't budge. I tried this product because I would definitely classify them as "stubborn." This stuff is amazing. The worst clogs are on my chin and forehead, and BHA9 is causing them to come to a head one at a time. It's bittersweet because the clogs end in painful breakouts, but I'd rather have them out than in & deal with the scars w/ C15.

    Clears blackheads
    • I don't usually write reviews, but I know how important they are for people with troubled skin. Let me just say that BHA 9 is the ONLY product I use for blackheads. I use it as a spot treatment each night, and my blackheads are pushed to the surface in a matter of weeks. Some take longer than others, but if you are patient and consistent, even the pesky ones will surface. The only downside is the price of this item. Nonetheless, this is my all-time favorite skin product, no question.

BHA 9 can do all of the following:

  2. Diminish white bumps
  3. Minimize enlarged pores
  4. Refine and smooth skin's texture
  5. Minimize sebaceous hyperplasia
  6. Smooth and soften dry, rough patches
  7. Help balance oily skin

Who is this product for?
Resist BHA 9 is designed for anyone who has struggled with stubborn skin imperfections who wants enhanced results over and above the treatments they've been using.

Key Ingredients: Boerhavia diffusa root extract, Avena sativa, glycerin, arginine, sea whip extract, salicylic acid

Product Ingredients:

Propylene Glycol (solvent/penetration enhancer), PEG-75, PEG-8 (thickeners), Water, Salicylic Acid (beta hydroxy acid/time-released exfoliant, 9%), Glycerin (skin-repairing ingredient), Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract (anti-irritant), Butylene Glycol (slip agent), Boerhavia Diffusa Root Extract (antioxidant plant extract), Sea Whip Extract (soothing plant extract), Arginine (amino acid/skin-conditioning agent), Polysorbate 20 (stabilizer), Disodium EDTA (chelating agent).

DIRECTIONS: At night, apply as a leave-on spot treatment for stubborn imperfections. Dispense a very small amount of Resist BHA 9 onto a clean fingertip, and massage a thin layer over affected areas. Suitable for use around the eyes, but avoid contact with eyelids and do not apply along the lower lashline. For best results, use after cleansing and toning, but it can also be used as the last step in your skincare routine. Experiment to see which method works best for your skin concerns. May be applied on its own or over a Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting exfoliant. May be applied over larger areas if needed. Reduce frequency of usage if irritation or flaking occurs.

PRECAUTIONS:

This product contains 9% salicylic acid. Please note:

  • Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin
  • If you experience irritation, rinse from skin and discontinue use
  • Avoid direct contact with eyes
  • Protect skin with sunscreen daily
  • Ask your doctor before using on children
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before use

Detailed instructions on how/when to apply your Paula's Choice products can be found in our How to Put Together Your Own Skincare Routine article.

What is the strength of BHA 9?

BHA 9 contains 9% salicylic acid in a unique formula, time-released to prevent irritation without sacrificing the result of its 9% strength. This allows even those with sensitive skin (perhaps even those who cannot tolerate our 2% BHA formulas) to reap the incredible results possible with BHA 9.

Is BHA 9 just a spot treatment or can I use it all over my face?

A thin layer of BHA 9 may be applied all over your face if needed, but you would want to use it first over smaller areas where stubborn imperfections (for example, blackheads that have not responded to a BHA exfoliant with 2% salicylic acid) are an issue to see how your skin responds.

How often can I use BHA 9?

We recommend applying BHA 9 once a day preferably in the evening, after cleansing and toning. Many will find that their imperfections respond favorably with less frequent usage, such as 2-3 times per week. For best results, experiment to determine the frequency of application that works best for you.

Is it OK to use BHA 9 if I am also using a skin lightening product that contains hydroquinone?

Yes. Apply the BHA 9 to affected areas first and follow with the skin lightening product where needed. Finish with your Paula's Choice serum and moisturizer. During the day, follow with a product rated SPF 15 or greater.

Can BHA 9 be applied at the same time as my retinol or prescription tretinoin product?

Yes, but for use with prescription retinoids, check with your doctor first. If you decide to try the BHA 9 use it as part of your evening skincare routine. Apply a thin layer of BHA 9 first, as either a spot treatment or all over your face and then follow with your retinol or prescription retinoid product, and finish with serum and/or moisturizer. Pay close attention to how your skin responds.

Can I use the BHA 9 at the same time as one of Paula's Choice BHA or AHA products?

Yes, though for some skin types applying two exfoliants at the same time increases the risk of irritation and that is never the goal. It is also fine to apply any of our BHA or AHA products to areas of your face where you are not applying the BHA 9 exfoliant, or you can alternate by applying your regular exfoliant in the morning and BHA 9 at night. BHA 9 was designed to be a spot treatment though lots of people are having great success using it all over their face and chest.

Is BHA 9 recommended for use around the eyes?

Yes, but only up to the orbital bone area (the bony ridge that stops just before the immediate undereye area). Do not apply BHA 9 to the eyelid or underbrow area.

Can BHA 9 be used on the body?

Yes. BHA 9 is excellent for treating stubborn imperfections on the body, too, especially white bumps, breakouts, and stubborn blackheads or patches of persistent keratosis pilaris. It is slippery so you would want to be careful what you wore to go to bed.

Will BHA 9 help fade acne scars?

Regular use of BHA 9 will help fade pink, red, or brown marks (known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) from acne breakouts, but will not affect deep or pitted scars such as those that can occur from cystic acne.

I have eczema. Can I use BHA 9?

Yes, but to start, apply this treatment to stubborn imperfections only, once daily or a few times per week, morning or evening. If applying over patches of eczema, pay close attention to how your skin responds. If signs of flaking or dryness occur, do not continue applying BHA 9 to these areas or reduce frequency of application. Follow with an emollient moisturizer.

I have rosacea and/or sensitive skin. Can I use BHA 9?

Yes, but to start, apply this treatment to stubborn imperfections only, once daily or a few times per week, in the evening. Pay close attention to how your skin responds. If signs of flaking or dryness occur, do not continue to apply BHA 9 to these areas or reduce frequency of application.

Is BHA 9 better than the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid exfoliant?

Not necessarily better, but it is stronger and designed to be a targeted treatment. BHA 9 is designed for stubborn imperfections (blackheads, white bumps, red marks from acne, sebaceous hyperplasia) that have not responded well (or at all) to one of our Skin Perfecting BHA exfoliants with 2% salicylic acid. BHA 9 is a potent treatment that for most will work best when applied to problem areas. For routine, daily exfoliation, continue to use one of our other BHA exfoliants on other parts of your face, neck, and chest.

How come BHA 9 is not part of the Clear line of anti-acne products?

Paula feels strongly that the benefits of BHA 9 are great enough to extend it beyond keeping acne breakouts under control. It is an excellent spot treatment for many types of skin issues such as sebaceous hyperplasia which primarily affects women over 40 who have oily skin and that wouldn't fall under the category of acne. Without question, BHA 9 can benefit acne-prone skin and can be used as part of a Clear routine if a stronger exfoliant to treat areas with stubborn imperfections, including Resistant blackheads and white bumps (milia) is needed.

What is the strength of BHA 9?

BHA 9 contains 9% salicylic acid in a unique formula, time-released to prevent irritation without sacrificing the result of its 9% strength. This allows even those with sensitive skin (perhaps who even cannot tolerate our 2% BHA formulas) to reap the incredible results possible with BHA 9.

What is the pH of BHA 9?

Resist BHA 9 has a pH range of 3.1-3.6, just like most of our other BHA exfoliants.

What's the difference between BHA 9 and your skin-lightening products?

The salicylic acid in BHA9 fades discoloration by increasing skin cell turnover rate, while key ingredients in Resist Pure Radiance Skin Brightening Treatment and our hydroquinone-based skin lighteners work to interrupt the pathways in skin that melanin (skin pigment) needs to form the discolorations. Used together on dark spots, these products will have a complementary, synergistic effect. And don't forget the sunscreen, a must when figting brown spots and uneven skin tone.

At what point after my laser and/or peel procedure can I begin using my BHA exfoliant again?

First, we urge you to follow the post-procedure instructions your doctor or nurse provided. If nothing was mentioned about when to resume use of a BHA exfoliant, please contact the doctor's office where you had the procedure done. Otherwise, our general advice is to begin using your BHA again as soon as possible. Or, if your skin seems extra-sensitive, you may want to wait and apply the BHA exfoliant a few days post-procedure. Salicylic acid is an excellent anti-inflammatory ingredient that can enhance skin's natural healing process as it works to reduce post-procedure redness.

I keep depressing the pump, but no product is coming out.

This product is packaged in an airless pump dispenser which utilizes a vacuum system to dispense and keep the contents fresh. Airless packaging helps to keep air and contaminates out of the product, which enhances the formula's stability and effectiveness.

When using your product for the first time, you may need to “prime” the dispenser. To prime, simply pump the dispenser slowly about 10-15 times. If the dispenser stops working at any time, simply repeat the "priming" step. Do not attempt to dismantle the package.
