To anyone deciding whether to try a sample: Yes, you should buy the sample!
    • After more than a week of nightly use (just over half the sample), I'm not seeing a huge dramatic effect, but it's a definite improvement over what the 2% BHA was doing. (Using on entire face, but mainly looking at the persistent clogged pores on my nose.) Not sure if it's worth the huge cost, but maybe. The sample is DEFINITELY worth buying: it lasts long enough to really get a sense of whether it'll work for you. All Paula's products should be available in substantial sample/travel sizes!

what can I say about this elixir?
    • Outstanding product, terrific-looking results. I was lucky to read the review by Michal before I purchased, which outlined the perfect solution to the overenthusiastic pump mechanism: Purchase and use a sample size also. When it's gone, pump the product into the sample vial and dispense from that on a nightly basis. Much easier to manage!

    • This product definitely minimized the size of my pores. I also noticed that I have less breakouts ever since I started using it.

    • Anyone with oily skin n occasional breakouts who is reaching a plateau in their skin care regime should get this. Definitely prevents pimples n stops new ones from forming.

Not sure what it's supposed to do
    • Gave it 3 stars b/c I'm indifferent about this product. I'm on my second tube, bit not sure I'll be buying again. I can't see a difference when I use vs. don't use. Gave it a few months and nada. Not for me, but I'll give a my sister to see if it does anything for her and report back.

    Wasn't for me
    • I've tried nearly the entire PC skin balancing line of products hoping for some improvement in the large pores on my face, and when that didn't work, I purchased the trial size of this product to try. I was very disheartened to see that even after I finished all the product that came in the sample size (more than a week's worth of uses), there was no difference in my large pores :(. Maybe I'll try another type of product now...

Not impressive, hard to manage package
    • I decided to try this during a bout with adult acne. I was not impressed. The product package is very hard to manage and tends to spill out more than you require. It did help me slightly but with the price point you are better off buying a tube of Tretonin (Retin A) which will have better results and last way longer. I like many of the products but this was not one of them.

This stuff is da bomb diggity!
    • All my life -- OK, since puberty -- I've been saying that if there was a miracle cure for blackheads on the nose, I would be the happiest woman on the planet! I can apply this on my nose, and practically overnight, the blackheads are diminished or gone! I'm not saying that my nose is blackhead-free, but it's much, much better, and what blackheads I do get are smaller and extract a lot more easily. Oh, and it's also shrinking the few small sebaceous hyperplasia that I have. LOVE THIS STUFF!

    Irritates sensitive skin
    • This is the only PC product I've been disappointed with. I have combination skin and my concerns are breakouts, aging, and uneven skin tone. All this product did was irritate my skin greatly. Redness and dryness as a result. Not pretty!

Great product - dispenser needs work
    • I've been using this product for about 3 months now. Although I haven't found that it eliminates blackheads completely, my pores are definitely smaller. If I do start to get a pimple, this product often stops it in its tracks or speeds up the healing process. I only need the tiniest amount of the product. I've found the trick is not to fully press down on the dispenser, but gently press the top until only a trickle comes out. In three months I haven't even gone through half the bottle.

In two days of use this product has diminished them greatly. I am so thrilled with this product it is almost hard to put into words. This, by far is the best!

    Sorry it didn't work
    • I really wanted this to work. I have a few brown sun spots on one cheek and also several sebaceous hyperplasia bumps. I have used two complete vials of BHA 9 with no results at all. Even my one large pore was not affected. I tried it as my last product (first vial) and my only product (second vial), but neither worked. Dermatology costs to treat s.b. are outrageous, usually require at least two treatments, and are not an option for me at this time. So disappointed that BHA 9 didn't work.

    Great product! Poor package design...
    • Excellent product. I use it at night and my skin looks gorgeous in the a.m. While I understand the pump packaging helps with product preservation, this particular pump doesn't work well. There's a catch in the pump that either gives me a tiny drop of the serum or I can push through the catch and get a giant glob of serum. Regardless, I will continue to use it because I love it but I'm hoping you guys will do a little restructuring. After some trial and error I've got the perfect PC routine!

    It works!
    • This product really works as it says it will. In less than a week of using only once a day, my previous acne scars are much less noticeable. I am also prone to red bumps from shaving and this has helped prevent or clear them up. The only thing I don't like is the packaging. Please do something about the pump. With how well the product works, there's always too much left over after spot treating.

Wish I'd met you in my teenage years
    • My skin is somewhat sensitive & prone to breakouts since I began 6th grade (remember the first Earth Day?). I've used a plethora of products over the course of those years. Then I began to watch Paula on AM Northwest. It was thanks to her that I began to see some relief & better understand my skin. BUT this has to be the best product for breakouts I've ever used. After applying it to blemishes (deep and shallow), I see a rapid reduction of inflammation & then within 2-3 days blemishes are gone!

    Will not help Milia...
    • Unfortunately, this is the only product from PC that I have tired and have been unhappy with. I was excited to see that they had a product which claimed to help treat Milia. I suffer from Milia on jaw and neck and have to have them extracted monthly and it is very costly. I wanted to help treat and prevent them at home to reduce the need for extraction. The BHA 9 did nothing for me, not the Milia or enlarged pores. I used this product religiously for 9 weeks and it did nothing for my skin.

Not for me -- scarring and redness
    • Unfortunately, this product did not work for me at all. I didn't notice any improvements in my blackheads or pores. More worryingly, when I applied it (lightly) to blemishes, they dried out to the point of cracking, and now in multiple cases, have scarred. I have never gotten scars from acne before. I thought that the serum might subsequently work to reduce the scarred spots, but have found that it usually makes the spots red and aggravated, and seems to do nothing to reduce their visibility.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear this product wasn't a fit for you. The RESIST BHA 9 is not capable of "scarring" skin. It seems that you may be displaying signs of over exfoliation which most likely means that this product or the manner in which it was being used was too potent for your skin. As over exfoliation can result in dryness, and dryness can make red marks or discolorations look worse, we recommend discontinuing the use of the BHA 9 and contacting our Customer Care team for additional assistance. They would be happy to make some alternate product and/or routine recommendations for you! A common point of confusion for those with acne is knowing the difference between an actual acne scar and a post-breakout red mark or discoloration. A scar results when there is damage to the deeper layers of your skin that has broken down the skin's support structure. Moderate to severe acne can damage the deeper layers of skin which leaves you with an actual indented or "ice-pick" scar. A mild to moderate breakout often leaves a red, pink, or brown discoloration, which eventually fades over time. Although people often refer to such marks as acne scars, they are really post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation marks, which appear as your body heals. Luckily, such marks are not really scars at all, and it is rare for them to be associated with permanently damaged skin.

    Brilliant product
    • Paula hit it out of the ballpark with this. There's nothing else like it on the market and compared to what the high-end Sephora or department-store brands would cost, it's not expensive at all. I used this a few nights in a row on some sudden breakouts. I have sensitive, fair, breakout prone combo skin. This product got rid of everything in 3 days without a trace of redness, flakiness or dryness. I really can't believe it. I'd tried everything imaginable for a month with no success before this.

    • I've been using this serum for almost three months and I have not seen any change in my skin. It also causes pimples. When I skip it in my routine I don't break out in tiny pimples. Thank you for your review, and we're sorry this wasn't a fit for you! It's tricky to know what the cause may have been, as it may have been a combination of factors (such as how you are using the product, other products combined) and so on. It also may have been a coincidence! Please contact our Customer Care Department and they will be happy to help answer your questions, as well as assist with a refund or credit.

Key Ingredients: Boerhavia diffusa root extract, Avena sativa, glycerin, arginine, sea whip extract, salicylic acid

Product Ingredients:

Propylene Glycol (solvent/penetration enhancer), PEG-75, PEG-8 (thickeners), Water, Salicylic Acid (beta hydroxy acid/time-released exfoliant, 9%), Glycerin (skin-repairing ingredient), Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract (anti-irritant), Butylene Glycol (slip agent), Boerhavia Diffusa Root Extract (antioxidant plant extract), Sea Whip Extract (soothing plant extract), Arginine (amino acid/skin-conditioning agent), Polysorbate 20 (stabilizer), Disodium EDTA (chelating agent).

DIRECTIONS: At night, apply as a leave-on spot treatment for stubborn imperfections. Dispense a very small amount of RESIST BHA 9 onto a clean fingertip, and massage a thin layer over affected areas. Suitable for use around the eyes, but avoid contact with eyelids and do not apply along the lower lashline. For best results, use after cleansing and toning, but it can also be used as the last step in your skincare routine. Experiment to see which method works best for your skin concerns. May be applied on its own or over a Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting exfoliant. May be applied over larger areas if needed. Reduce frequency of usage if irritation or flaking occurs.

PRECAUTIONS:

This product contains 9% salicylic acid. Please note:

  • Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin
  • If you experience irritation, rinse from skin and discontinue use
  • Avoid direct contact with eyes
  • Protect skin with sunscreen daily
  • Ask your doctor before using on children
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before use

Detailed instructions on how/when to apply your Paula's Choice products can be found in our How to Put Together Your Own Skin-Care Routine article.

Is BHA 9 just a spot treatment or can I use it all over my face?

A thin layer of BHA 9 may be applied all over your face if needed, but you would want to use it first over smaller areas where stubborn imperfections (for example, blackheads that have not responded to a BHA exfoliant with 2% salicylic acid) are an issue to see how your skin responds.

How often can I use BHA 9?

We recommend applying BHA 9 once a day preferably in the evening, after cleansing and toning. Many will find that their imperfections respond favorably with less frequent usage, such as 2-3 times per week. For best results, experiment to determine the frequency of application that works best for you.

Is it OK to use BHA 9 if I am also using a skin lightening product that contains hydroquinone?

Yes. Apply the BHA 9 to affected areas first and follow with the skin lightening product where needed. Finish with your Paula's Choice serum and moisturizer. During the day, follow with a product rated SPF 15 or greater.

Can BHA 9 be applied at the same time as my retinol or prescription tretinoin product?

Yes, but for use with prescription retinoids, check with your doctor first. If you decide to try the BHA 9 use it as part of your evening skin-care routine. Apply a thin layer of BHA 9 first, as either a spot treatment or all over your face and then follow with your retinol or prescription retinoid product, and finish with serum and/or moisturizer. Pay close attention to how your skin responds.

Can I use the BHA 9 at the same time as one of Paula's Choice BHA or AHA products?

Yes, though for some skin types applying two exfoliants at the same time increases the risk of irritation and that is never the goal. It is also fine to apply any of our BHA or AHA products to areas of your face where you are not applying the BHA 9 exfoliant, or you can alternate by applying your regular exfoliant in the morning and BHA 9 at night. BHA 9 was designed to be a spot treatment though lots of people are having great success using it all over their face and chest.

Is BHA 9 recommended for use around the eyes?

Yes, but only up to the orbital bone area (the bony ridge that stops just before the immediate undereye area). Do not apply BHA 9 to the eyelid or underbrow area.

Can BHA 9 be used on the body?

Yes. BHA 9 is excellent for treating stubborn imperfections on the body, too, especially white bumps, breakouts, and stubborn blackheads or patches of persistent keratosis pilaris. It is slippery so you would want to be careful what you wore to go to bed.

Will BHA 9 help fade acne scars?

Regular use of BHA 9 will help fade pink, red, or brown marks (known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) from acne breakouts, but will not affect deep or pitted scars such as those that can occur from cystic acne.

I have eczema. Can I use BHA 9?

Yes, but to start, apply this treatment to stubborn imperfections only, once daily or a few times per week, morning or evening. If applying over patches of eczema, pay close attention to how your skin responds. If signs of flaking or dryness occur, do not continue applying BHA 9 to these areas or reduce frequency of application. Follow with an emollient moisturizer.

I have rosacea and/or sensitive skin. Can I use BHA 9?

Yes, but to start, apply this treatment to stubborn imperfections only, once daily or a few times per week, in the evening. Pay close attention to how your skin responds. If signs of flaking or dryness occur, do not continue to apply BHA 9 to these areas or reduce frequency of application.

Is BHA 9 better than the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid exfoliant?

Not necessarily better, but it is stronger and designed to be a targeted treatment. BHA 9 is designed for stubborn imperfections (blackheads, white bumps, red marks from acne, sebaceous hyperplasia) that have not responded well (or at all) to one of our Skin Perfecting BHA exfoliants with 2% salicylic acid. BHA 9 is a potent treatment that for most will work best when applied to problem areas. For routine, daily exfoliation, continue to use one of our other BHA exfoliants on other parts of your face, neck, and chest.

How come BHA 9 is not part of the CLEAR line of anti-acne products?

Paula feels strongly that the benefits of BHA 9 are great enough to extend it beyond keeping acne breakouts under control. It is an excellent spot treatment for many types of skin issues such as sebaceous hyperplasia which primarily affects women over 40 who have oily skin and that wouldn't fall under the category of acne. Without question, BHA 9 can benefit acne-prone skin and can be used as part of a CLEAR routine if a stronger exfoliant to treat areas with stubborn imperfections, including resistant blackheads and white bumps (milia) is needed.

What is the strength of BHA 9?

BHA 9 contains 9% salicylic acid in a unique formula, time-released to prevent irritation without sacrificing the result of its 9% strength. This allows even those with sensitive skin (perhaps who even cannot tolerate our 2% BHA formulas) to reap the incredible results possible with BHA 9.

What is the pH of BHA 9?

RESIST BHA 9 has a pH range of 3.1-3.6, just like most of our other BHA exfoliants.

What's the difference between BHA 9 and your skin-lightening products?

The salicylic acid in BHA9 fades discoloration by increasing skin cell turnover rate, while key ingredients in RESIST Pure Radiance Skin Brightening Treatment and our hydroquinone-based skin lighteners work to interrupt the pathways in skin that melanin (skin pigment) needs to form the discolorations. Used together on dark spots, these products will have a complementary, synergistic effect. And don't forget the sunscreen, a must when figting brown spots and uneven skin tone.

At what point after my laser and/or peel procedure can I begin using my BHA exfoliant again?

First, we urge you to follow the post-procedure instructions your doctor or nurse provided. If nothing was mentioned about when to resume use of a BHA exfoliant, please contact the doctor's office where you had the procedure done. Otherwise, our general advice is to begin using your BHA again as soon as possible. Or, if your skin seems extra-sensitive, you may want to wait and apply the BHA exfoliant a few days post-procedure. Salicylic acid is an excellent anti-inflammatory ingredient that can enhance skin's natural healing process as it works to reduce post-procedure redness.
