Great for summer
About Me Beauty Conscious
Comments about SKIN BALANCING Antioxidant Serum with Retinol - 1 oz:
I have aging, sun damaged, combination skin, prone to breakouts and redness. I also have melasma and wear quite a bit of foundation and concealer.I needed something to protect my skin against further damage, but would not make my skin greasy and make my makeup wear off sooner. This serum really works for me. It is matte and absorbs completely. My skin feels soft and soothed when I put it on and my makeup goes on smoothly and lasts, especially in summer and in combination with Paula's Antiaging Clear Skin Hydrator. Fortunately, my skin has not had any negative reaction and it's pretty sensitive. I love the gel-like consistency. My skin has really benefitted from this serum. Lines softer, brown areas a little lighter. Great product for me.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I was really hoping this would work for me as an all-over face serum since I had been using the Resist Ultra-Light Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum all over my face for a couple of years. Unfortunately, I have not been able to use this product anywhere other than under my eyes.. and even that area (initially) had little bumps when I woke up the next morning. Additionally, the texture of this serum is not as serum-like. It is more like a gooey gel that does not spread as well as the Ultra-light. I wish I would have stuck with that one because this has not done anything that positive for me.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Greasy and difficult to apply
from Los Angeles, CA
About Me Minimalist
This serum reminds me very much of "dry oil" body products I have used in that it has both a dry, and a greasy, slick feel to it. Application was a bit awkward since the serum was separated into liquid and gel parts. On my face, it left a slight slimy film, and lots of shine on my forehead and nose. On the plus side, it is very light weight, soaks in relatively quickly, and isn't sticky like some serums I have used. The scent is inoffensive, and does not linger once the product is applied. The serum isn't particularly hydrating, so for combination skin, some moisturizer would need to be applied to drier areas.I used the serum from two sample sachets, so I can't comment on the long term benefits. Based on this experience, I will probably not buy the full size product. However, if I were to use this product full time, I would choose to only wear it at night because of how shiny it made my skin.

Bummed this caused breakouts for me
from Seattle, WA
I LOVE how much PC Skin Recovery SPF 30, Moisture Boost cleanser and Best Face Forward foundation have cleared up my skin problems, so now I've been trying to wade into the serums. I don't know what it is, none of the serums or add-ons so far agree with me, including this one. Usually if something is too oily or too moisturizing, I'd get breakouts in my t-zone, and if it's irritating, breakouts on my dry cheeks. Unfortunately this serum gave me both. I didn't use a ton, just put a few drops in the moisturizer, but that was enough to set my skin off, and since it's the only change in my routine, I know it's the culprit. I tried the samples before buying the tube and they didn't cause an issue, but I also don't use the whole pouch at once so maybe being exposed to air over 3 days inactivated whatever was doing the irritating. Anyways, usually I love the samples to avoid returns, but not this time. When the breakouts die back down, I might try the new Calm serum, but since it focuses on reducing redness vice anti-aging, and the PC lotion by itself stops redness for me, it seems a little redundant. Fingers crossed the Calm 1% BHA works better for me than the regular 1% lotion, I'm trying those samples next.

Made bumps on my forehead go away
from Kansas City, MO
About Me Rosacea, Sensitive Skin
I love this serum! I have had some stubborn sebaceous hyperplasia bumps on my forehead that I figured were just part of the new 40-year-old me, but they disappeared (probably within a week) when I started using this serum. I know it was the serum because when I ran out of it I tried another product for a couple of weeks, and the bumps CAME BACK! So I went back to the Skin Balancing serum with retinol and my forehead is smooth again. The texture is different than other serums I've used, but it doesn't bother me...and more importantly, it works!

Best for my Combo skin
from Ellicott City, Md
I have combination/oily skin but the crazy type which is super oily on the nose, relatively oily on the forehead and chin and extremely dry on cheeks and eyes. I had used before the resist serum for acne/wrinkles but I found that the texture was too rich for my skin. This one is definitely the best. I love the texture, it's like a primer, extremely light weight and smooth. I notice the difference in my skin if sometimes I don't put it on because I ran out of it. I wish it would come in a bigger tube.
Irritated skin A LOT.
from St. Louis, MO
About Me Beauty Conscious, Minimalist
My friend who is a regular customer for Paula's Choice products gave this product to me as a gift, since I was new to Paula's Choice products. She told me that this will help hydrate my normally oily skin that needs hydration. However, after about 2 weeks of using it, my skin has gotten worse. I don't know if it is just the ingredient that is irritating my skin, but even after following the direction for using retinol products, my skin is not getting better. I didn't break out from my normal skincare routine but this broke me out in the chin area and gave me rashes on my cheeks. Definitely not the best first experience from this company.. Since I don't usually break out, I am pretty stressed out from seeing all these problems. And I'm sure stressing out about my skin is even worse for my skin. Ugh.

I use this serum after cleansing (other products)and exfoliation (Skin Perfecting lotion) at night and the results have been great. The texture is light and absorbs nicely leaving your skin feeling balanced just like the poduct says. I don't feel the need to put moisturizer after either, even if occasionally I do for extra soft and smooth skin the next morning. After one month the combination of the products I use have resulted in the smoothest and most unclogged pores I've had in a long time and my hormonal acne has substantially subsided.

Good Stuff! But Use Sparingly; Ineffective on Wrinkles, IME
About Me Beauty Conscious, Mature Skin, Minimalist
I have mature, combination skin, large pores, and am prone to hormonal acne breakouts. I bought this for a couple of reasons:- The primer I normally used (another brand) is being discontinued, and I needed something to hide my pores that wouldn't cause breakouts- I wanted something with retinol, as I have acne, age spots, and fine lines tooSo, first of all, if you're sensitive to silicone, skip this product. It's loaded with silicone agents. However, I'm (surprisingly!) not sensitive to silicone, and I love the feeling it leaves on my face. But it's odd to get used to using, honestly. I'm on my second tube now though, and this one separates worse than my first one did. I've tried storing it on its lid and in a container with lid up, and still have to shake it well before dispensing. Before you use it, make sure your skin is completely dry. It can ball up on skin that isn't dry. And after you use it, let it dry/set well before applying any other product. I've found that if I don't leave it alone to dry/set, anything I apply next will cause it to ball up. But it's fine as long as my skin is dry to begin with, and I let it set afterwards. It works GREAT as a primer. And hides pores well (but again, let it set, or the product will get picked up by whatever you put on next). After I shake it, I apply a small pea-sized bit to clean fingertip, and dot onto forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin. Then blend gently. A little goes a long way. Some things I've noticed: When I first started using it I had no peeling, but I was using it around my eyes and the skin there definitely began to dry out and my lines became much more pronounced. I've since ordered the PC eye cream, and have stopped using this product around my eyes altogether. However, I have extremely sensitive skin around my eyes (but only there) and this did not make my eyes water or swell, as many other products have. So that was nice. Still, additional dryness was bad for my 40s eye area, so I stopped using it there. Also, I think I overdid it all over my face the first few weeks, as my pores started looking BIGGER before I applied this. So I backed off and went from twice daily (morning and night) to once a day as a makeup primer, and will skip a day when my face started feeling a bit dry (which is rare for me -- I don't usually suffer from dry skin). My pores look smaller now than they did to begin with, despite PC's claims this will not reduce pore size, but only appearance. I am also using BHA products, but have used them for years and am just now seeing a difference in pore size, so I really think this product is helping now that I'm not overdoing it. Anyway, don't panic if this happens to you. Just back off a bit on how often you're using it and make sure not to overload problem areas. Also, apparently I'm one of those people where retinol makes my skin thinner. I had no idea, but red spots and acne places started taking longer to heal. So I've also started avoiding those areas.Bottom line : If you are squeamish about watery gels on your face, you might not like the consistency, or it might take some getting used to. But I LOVE it. I think it feels great on my skin, and if I didn't have red areas I needed to hide, this is what I would wear in lieu of makeup. It's that good. It's a boost of confidence in a tube. And while it has not fixed some things, and I've had to adjust some others, all in all I think this is a fabulous primer, especially for hiding pores.
