I just don't know about this one.
    • Let me start by saying that I love Paula's products and have been using them for the better party of 10 years. I hate to leave a bad review, but this product must be the exception.. Earlier this year I ordered it again at the recommendation of the chat person. It pills terribly when I use it, but I also noticed I am getting a lot more milia. I wish it would work because the 2% is too harsh for my sensitive/rosacea skin and I don't like the smell of the 1% lotion.

    Perfect
    • This is the perfect exfoliant for me, it is a very gentle yet very effective exfoliant which does not cause any irritation for me. The texture is very nice and absorbent, drys instantly to a matte finish which is perfect for my combination skin. I have been using it for two weeks now in addition to my PC skincare routine. I have noticed a dramatic improvement in the overall health and appearance of my skin. I am very pleased with this product. I would highly recommend it.

    So-so
    • I've been using the 1% BHA Gel every other night for around a month now, and I'm relatively happy with it, I guess. I have sensitive, acne-prone combination skin. It helps take care of smaller, inflamed pimples, but it seemingly causes nodules ("stress zits," which are hard, painful bumps under the skin). Every time I wake up after having put the 1% BHA Gel on my face the night before, I have at least one new nodule/stress zit. They're very painful, and I don't know why this happens.. :/

Thanks for your review! The most likely reason this is happening is that the action of the BHA exfoliant is loosening clogs deeper in the pore lining that would eventually surface as breakouts or firm nodules beneath the skin.

Good replacement for the 1% lotion
    • I was devastated when PC changed the formula of the 1% BHA lotion, which had been my holy grail for a clear complexion. For some reason I tried the 2% formulas before this one. 2% was too harsh for my skin and actually caused breakouts. The very helpful customer service team suggested the 1% gel and I'm thrilled! All the results of the old 1% lotion, but without the horrible smell (the new 1% lotion has awful cucumber melon scent).

    A good surprise
    • Initially, I bought a couple of samples of the 1% BHA Lotion, but the smell was terrible. I really liked the results, though, so I decided to try the gel. Not only it smells so much better, but it was gentler on my skin. This is the first time I really found a skin care routine that works for me. I use the Skin recovery dry skin cleanser and moisturiser, and use this 1% BHA gel in between. Not only my skin feels much better, no rough pores around my nose and cheeks , but the redness is gone.

    Best thing for seborrheic dermatitis
    • I suffer from seborrheic dermatitis. This gently melts the problem areas away, leaving a healthy itch-free scalp. As an unanticipated side-effect, it seems to balance oil production so I can go longer between washes (which my very long, baby-fine hair thanks me for!). I recommend this over the 2%, which seems to inflame my scalp, and I don't use it every day. What I'd love is some kind of applicator (please?) - rubbing my fingers through my hair is clumsy and damages my hair.

Nice, might be just right for those with less stubborn acne
    • I just started using many Paula products so it can be hard to determine what's a hit; what's a miss. For me, this is a miss. I love that it's a gel. I tried the liquid and it's too runny. This stays right on my finger. Again, for me, it isn't working well enough so I probably need the 2% strength. FYI, be careful with your pump depression or you'll get out too much. I love Paula's products. I tried that other "active" brand. Not even close to the quality and effectiveness of Paula's Choice.

    Great addition/problem solver
    • I recently discovered Paulas Choice website, and wish I had a LONG TIME AGO! I love all of the info provided and am slightly addicted to reading it. My skin issues are oily acne prone, melasma spots, and starting to show wrinkles. I have already been using tretinoin .05% for a while now and my skin was having trouble adjusting to it with flaky areas at least once a week. I added BHA as recommended by Paula and it has helped a great deal. My skin suprisingly tolerates tretinoin better now.

Great Exfoliant for Sensitive Combo Skin
    • Another product I have been using for probably 2 years+. It does exactly what it says and I love the gel. It smooths on quickly and easily and is very light. I use it morning and night after cleansing and apply my other products for moisturizing, sun protection, makeup etc over the top. I have sensitive skin but it is also combination. I will continue to use this religiously! Don't know how I survived before I started using this product!

    Does what is says
    • Does exactly what is claims. I used the sample size and am now purchasing the full size. Caused zero irritation and evens out skin tone. I use this only at night mostly. Oh and if you want to apply lotion on top of this, wait 5-7 mins for it to dry and then you're set.

    Great product!
    • This has really changed my skin for the better. I use the 1% gel 2 days a week and the 2% gel once a week and have had fantastic resuts. My skin does not break out like it used to and now looks even and smooth. Has helped with the fine lines around my eyes and minimized laugh lines also. For ones that say this balls up try not overlapping dry product or over rubbing the product when applying. I have learned to rub on quickly, let dry a few minutes and then put on sunblock and have no issues.

    Simply Amazing!!
    • I have tried EVERYTHING and nothing worked until I tried Paula's products. Seriously, I've been loyal to one company for decades...but their products didn't cure my blackheads that left ugly scars. I was desperate for something new. I had search the web and saw the advertisement for Paula's products and the rest is history. It's magical! The results (although it does take time), were AMAZING!! I recommend this product and the anti-aging retinal cream serious issues. I have my face back, Thanks.

    Not happy with this product!
    • After reading raving reviews about the BHA exfoliants, I decided to give it a try. I really want to like it, but it balls up on my face! I have recurring acne that flares up every once in a while and I was hoping the BHA formula will keep them at bay. However, the acne keeps coming back. I have a suspicion that the product never actually gets absorbed into my skin. It balls up as soon as I put on the product. It's so bad that I have to constantly wipe the flakes off my face!

Would love more if a liquid
    • I use this in combination with the 2 % liquid. I have mild rosacea and usually flame up on my cheeks if I use an exfoliant but this ,at most, produces a tingle. I use this on my cheeks and the 2 percent liquid on the rest of my face and neck. There is a noticeable difference in my skin when I use these. I do not really like the gel consistency as much as the liquid for the reasons others have stated and would like to see a 1% liquid.

Please Paula we need 1% liquid!
    • After using the 1% lotion and it not being a great experience (my face was red and felt sunburnt) I decided to give this a try. It's better than the lotion because its so much lighter/thinner, the smell is okay but smells kinda 'plasticky' however it dissipates pretty quickly. I really wish we could get a 1% liquid - I would be thrilled! There are two 2% liquids but they are too much for some of us, please help us Paula.

    Just OK
    • I think this product is effective, but I'm not happy with the gel itself. Once the gel dries, it just sits on top of my combination skin, and then the gel itself starts to flake and peel off. The performance of the BHA still seems to be effective, but I think that I would have preferred a lotion that soaks into the skin, much better.

    Great Exfoliant!
    • I have very oily/acne prone skin and I use this gel exfoliant during the day before putting on my Epiduo gel. I really love the texture of it- it goes on very easily. It also smells much better than the 1% BHA lotion, which I use at night. It's really helped with my acne and the appearance of my skin. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with an acne problem!

    My mistake!
    • After being diagnosed with rosacea last summer, I switched from the RESIST AHA lotion to SP 1% BHA lotion which worked beautifully. Living in a hot humid climate with summer coming on, I decided to try something even lighter and go with the gel during the warmer months. Every time I use this it begins to immediately ball up. I have tried using it while my face is still moist with toner and waiting til completely dry. Always end up "brushing off the crumbs" before I can put on my moisturizer.

    Fantastic
    • The effect of the product is gradual, but the payoff is remarkable. The 2% liquid was a little harsh to start with, so I stepped down a notch to the 1%. I like the gel because I use it on my body as well, and I don't need cotton pads to apply it. One pump will cover the entire face. Over time, you will see smoother, clearer skin. I would really recommend this to anyone who is new to BHAs or has not used them for a while. I may move up to the 2% for summer, but the 1% is a great start.

Good but going to try the 2%
    • I really like this product, as I do most PC products. It has definitely helped smooth my complexion. It has also helped to keep my random breakouts in check. Unfortunately, I saw no difference in BHs on my nose. I have pretty clear skin for the most part. I'll breakout occasionally once a month, but I do have stubborn BHs. I'm almost finished with my bottle, and I think I'm going to try the 2% gel. Hopefully this will help my issue. I have also tried the RESIST BHA 9 and saw no difference in BHs either. Maybe my skin is just extremely stubborn. Overall, I think this is a great product.

    Gentle and Effective
    • This is gentle, yet effective for hypersensitive skin with mild acne. I saw an immediate improvement in my skin when I first used this, but it took about a month for my skin to clear. This is lightweight, absorbs well and only a small amount is needed to cover the entire face and neck. Higher percentages of BHA and the AHAs irritate my skin, making exfoliation and acne control impossible until I found this. I highly recommend the Skin Perfecting 1% BHA Gel for those looking for a gentle exfoliant.

    Balls up
    • I'm still not sure whether this product is working... been using it for quite a while now and it hasn't seemed to do anything on my stubborn blackheads, might have to keep using it for longer as I know different products work differently on different people. Another major thing is that it balls up when I put other products on top of it. Not sure if I'd get better results with the 2% and if it was a liquid form? Customer Care Response: Thank you for your review. The 2% BHA Liquid would be the most effective. Blackheads can be very stubborn and for some never completely go away. If twice daily application of the 2% BHA Liquid does not help then you would need to add in a prescription strength retinoid from a dermatologist which helps the shape of the pores become more round and normal so that the BHA may better exfoliate them. The combination of the product would be the most effective for stubborn blackheads and clogged pores. Please contact customer care so that we may offer you an in house credit for the product and make suggestions on your routine.

    Fell in love with!
    • This is by far one of my favorite products. Fair and sun damaged skin, lots of freckles and discolorations, breakouts, sensitivity and oiliness...the list goes on and on. What I have to say about this product is that it was a surprise for me to find an exfoliant that wasn't mechanical, but chemical. The salicylic acid really helps unclog pores ( I have been using in for 9 months) and even figured that it can be applied to other body areas like chest, upper arms below the Paula's Choice Resist 2% BHA Body Treatment (even helps towards the elimination of Keratosis Pilaris). I have talked to one of the representatives over the phone because I have been experiencing some tougher breakouts, very difficult to deal with. She recommended me to change from the 1% gel to the 2% BHA Liquid, since it can be more effective for the occasional breakouts that I still get in my late 30's. Whenever I finish this one, I will definitely move to a higher concentration formula, but this is a great, innovative products. Can't get tired to use it morning and night! Thumbs up!!

What makes this product unique?
Skin Perfecting 1% BHA Gel Exfoliant exfoliates both the skin's surface and inside the pore, reshaping the pore lining to unclog pores and improving skin cell turnover rate. This creates a dramatic improvement in the skin's appearance, feel, and function and overall leads to healthier skin. There is a great deal of research indicating that BHA (beta hydroxy acid) increases collagen production and drastically smooths the surface of skin. Additionally, BHA has antibacterial properties that attack blemish-causing bacteria. The silky gel consistency is a great option for oily to very oily skin and also provides light hydration.

This product is 100% fragrance and colorant-free with a pH range of 3.2-3.8 for superior exfoliating properties. Every Paula's Choice BHA product is formulated with additional soothing agents.

Who is this product for?
1% BHA Gel works well on all skin types, but the texture is especially suited for those with normal to very oily skin.

NOTE: Those allergic to aspirin (acetylsalicylate) should not use products containing salicylic acid (beta hydroxy acid).

What's the difference between AHA and BHA exfoliants? Do I need both?

When properly formulated, both AHAs and BHA are brilliant options for exfoliating the surface of skin. Both AHA and BHA work to reduce wrinkles, stimulate collagen, and firm skin but each has its special qualities you'll want to consider when deciding which one to use:

  • AHAs are preferred for sun-damaged and dry skin because they exfoliate on the surface of skin and have the added benefit of also improving moisture content.
  •  BHA is preferred for oily, acne-prone skin and for treating blackheads and white bumps because BHA can get through the oil that's clogging your pores, normalizing the lining of the misshapen pore that contributes to acne.
  • BHA has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action. Those are two more reasons to use a BHA exfoliant if you have acne or sensitive, reddened skin.
  • BHA is preferred for those struggling with rosacea. Not everyone with rosacea can tolerate an exfoliant, but it is wise to experiment with a BHA product to see how your rosacea responds.

If your skin is sun-damaged and you're also struggling with acne or clogged pores, add a BHA product to your routine.

If you'd like to use an AHA and BHA at the same time, that is an option, though not really necessary. Some people find they work well when they're applied at the same time, but if you want to give this a try it is best to apply them separately, one during the day and one in the evening.

How do I use an AHA or BHA exfoliant?

  • You can apply an AHA or BHA product once or twice a day.
  • You can also apply either of these around the eye area but not on the eyelid or directly under the eye.
  • Apply the AHA or BHA product after your face is cleansed and after your toner has dried.
  • Once the AHA or BHA has been absorbed, you can apply any other product in your routine, such as moisturizer, serum, eye cream, sunscreen, and/or foundation.
  • If you're using a topical prescription product such as Renova, other retinoids, or any of the topical prescription products for rosacea, apply the BHA or AHA first.

Your AHA (glycolic acid) products have a higher percentage than your BHA (salicylic acid) products. Does this mean AHA is a stronger exfoliant?

AHA products are most effective at a 5% to 10% concentration and BHA at 1% to 2% concentration. Think about it like making bread, the amount of yeast you need is tiny in comparison to the amount of flour you use but equally important to get the results you want. The percentage of effectiveness varies depending on the ingredient. Rest assured that the BHA products are not any less effective due to lower concentrations of the exfoliant.

How does Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 1% BHA Gel Exfoliant compare to the Skin Perfecting 1% BHA Lotion Exfoliant?

The main difference lies with each product's texture. The 1% BHA Lotion has a light lotion base with a touch of moisture. Our 1% BHA Gel has a water-light base that also has hydration benefits. Those with oily to very oily skin may prefer the gel's texture.

Is Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 1% BHA Gel Exfoliant stronger than the Skin Perfecting 1% BHA Lotion Exfoliant?

From a percentage of active ingredient standpoint, no. However, because the 1% BHA Gel has a glycol base, it is better able to penetrate the skin, which may produce faster (but not necessarily better) results.

I tried Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 1% BHA Lotion Exfoliant and did not care for the texture, and Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant was too strong for my skin. Will the Skin Perfecting 1% BHA Gel work for me?

Quite possibly, yes. If you're looking for a BHA exfoliant whose texture is lighter than our 1% BHA Lotion but not as strong as our 2% BHA Liquid, the 1% BHA Gel should be an ideal "happy medium" for your skin.

At what point after my laser and/or peel procedure can I begin using my BHA exfoliant again?

First, we urge you to follow the post-procedure instructions your doctor or nurse provided. If nothing was mentioned about when to resume use of a BHA exfoliant, please contact the doctor's office where you had the procedure done. Otherwise, our general advice is to begin using your BHA again as soon as possible. Or, if your skin seems extra-sensitive, you may want to wait and apply the BHA exfoliant a few days post-procedure. Salicylic acid is an excellent anti-inflammatory ingredient that can enhance skin's natural healing process as it works to reduce post-procedure redness.
