Additional Information

Why is it different?
Combined with potent antioxidants, CLINICAL 1% Retinol Treatment is a specially formulated light lotion that absorbs quickly and goes to work immediately to enhance hydration and diminish the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven skin tones. Licorice, oat extract and other soothing ingredients help to calm redness.
What does it do?
Goes to work immediately to visibly refine pore size and diminish the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and uneven skin tone. The light lotion formula is supplemented with nourishing licorice extract, oat extract and other soothing plant extracts to calm skin and ease redness. You’ll be amazed at how much younger-looking, firmer, and radiant your skin will look and feel.
How to use

Limit initial use to three times per week; gradually increase frequency to every other night, then finally each evening as tolerated. Apply a pea-sized amount amount after cleansing and toning. Carefully avoid the lips, eyes (including eyelids) and corners of the eyes. Can be used on the perimeter of the orbital bone if desired. To minimize irritation, try combining with 2-3 drops of Resist Moisture Renewal Oil Booster.

Note: Some people may experience a delayed sensitized reaction to 1% retinol. Do not assume that if no reaction is seen after a few applications that you can apply this product more frequently. Pay close attention to how your skin responds and adjust usage accordingly.

If sensitization occurs (redness, flaking, tenderness, or drying of skin), reduce frequency of use or mix one pump of the Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment with your favorite Paula’s Choice serum or PM moisturizer. If sensitization persists, discontinue use. Protect skin daily with sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater.

Need to get rid of milia?? GET THIS

I have very sensitive, milia-prone skin that barely agrees with products I try to use. I could rant and rave about this stuff for days because it COMPLETELY changed my face. My skin is softer, firmer, more radiant, and every trace of milia I had is gone. I will be buying this again, for sure!!!!

One of my favorites!

This product works wonders for my skin's texture. I use it daily at night with the BHA liquid and am completely fine (I have sensitive skin). I have mild acne scarring/hyperpigmentation and feel that this works well with the BHA, peptide booster, and niacinimide for improving those issues :)

The best

This stuff works. Don't listen to the other reviewers complain about the pump. Only once in the last 10 years that I have a problem in the company sent me a brand new one free of charge. This makes my skin look softer and dare I say younger. For reference I am 50 years old with very fair skin. My skin is in phenomenal condition primarily from the use of daily I repeat daily application of a good SPF. Paula's Choice retinol has taken it to the next level. Don't skip sunscreen because everything else is pointless. Sunscreen is the one step you can never do without because it will undo all the good you've done by the way I like this better than prescription because I can use it almost every night

The best retinol treatment I've ever used. I've been using this for years and it's fabulous. Highly recommend it!!!

Mixed feelings

I just started using this product. So far I can tell you that the pump is defective. Unfortunately, when I was attempting to kick start it the way that they instruct you too, the bottom of the bottle broke! I appreciate the care to package an air and light-sensitive product carefully but was really disappointed that it was hard to use. Attempting to get it to work properly resulted in me literally breaking the bottle apart. Needless to say, I can now get product out of the bottle but this did not make for a positive first impression. The product itself is high quality. It is a creamy texture and goes on very smooth. It doesn't have an offensive smell either. I will continue to use! One point of confusion for me, however, is whether or not I can use an AHA/BHA exfoliant while using this product? On the product packaging it instructs you to avoid, however on the website says it is safe. Any advice?

Pump does not work

It's frustrating to pay what you pay and get a dysfunctional product. The pump does not work. I cannot get any product out of the container. I ordered 5 items from PC and two of them have dysfunctional/non-working pumps.

Great product!

This is one of the only products I use where you literally see the results in days. It took me about a month of sporadic use to acclimatize to the retinol but now my skin is very resilient and I'm able to use it even with a BHA. This product has done wonders for my pores and overall skin vitality.

Poor packaging

I can't critique the product because I can't get any out of the container. This has happened before with other products with defective packaging. I have been a loyal user of PC for years, but it's getting frustrating dealing with poor packaging.

The One Constant in my Skin Care Routine!

The Paula's Choice 1% Retinol Treatment Serum is one of few products that I have re-purchased several times. This retinol is strong enough to be very effective but contains enough skin soothing ingredients that it doesn't leave my skin feeling irritated. If you haven't used retinol before I recommend you start out very slowly- like every other day or even less if your skin starts to flake. You could also mix this in with a hydrating serum or the other option is to start out with a product that has a lower percentage of retinol. I have read some reviews of the Paula's Choice Serum stating that it made their skin flake and dry but this has nothing to do with the brand- it is just that the percentage of retinol was just too much for them to start out with. I use this at night after cleansing and on top of a very light hydrating serum. I always apply a thick moisturizing cream over the retinol serum to keep my skin from becoming overly dry. I love that Paula's Choice has done a great job protecting the serum from air and light. Retinol is extremely reactive to air and light exposure so you definitely want make sure the retinol you buy protects it from this exposure. This is also why you should use retinol at night and ALWAYS use sunscreen in the day time. The only "true" anti-aging product you can buy is sunscreen. One more thing to love is that this serum is alcohol and fragrance free. It is also on the more affordable end of the spectrum and cruelty free to boot.
