The Benefits of Ceramides for Skin

The Benefits of Ceramides for Skin

Ceramides are the most abundant part of skin, making up over 50% of its composition. They’re critical for holding skin together, protecting it from dehydration, signs of sensitivity, and environmental attack.

But what makes ceramides even more amazing is not only the role they play in protecting skin, but the role they play in “educating” skin to literally help it look younger and feel better. Ceramides, along with retinol, niacinamide, and peptides, are all responsible for intelligent skin communication, but this is especially true for ceramides. Think of them as the conductor in the symphony of beautifully resilient skin!

When we’re young, the skin makes lots and lots of natural ceramides but as we age, and because of sun damage, the quantity and quality of ceramides in our skin becomes depleted.

That’s why ceramides are an incredibly important part of having and maintaining beautiful, moist, firmer-looking, supple-feeling skin.

Giving your skin back the ceramides it no longer can create for itself will absolutely help skin visibly behave as it once did. The best way to deliver ceramides to skin is to use skincare products that contain these precious ingredients.

Phytosphingosine and Sphingolipids

There are also two fascinating ingredients used in skincare products called phytosphingosine and sphingolipids that can help skin’s uppermost layers make more ceramides. These types of formularies offer exciting possibilities for signs of aging plus helping to protect skin from environmental stressors.

If you haven’t thought about ceramides before as being something important for your skin, it’s time to reevaluate their role in improving your skin. As serious skincare research evolves (not just trends but real science), we often need to take a step back and rethink our skin’s needs. This is true for all ages, all skin types.

And just to be clear, while ceramides are important for skin, they aren’t the be-all, end-all of brilliant ingredients. As the largest organ of the body, skin has many essential needs plus special needs depending on your skin type and concerns. Ceramides are a wonderful addition to the other essential substances skin needs, ranging from antioxidants, hydrating ingredients, skin-restoring ingredients, and exfoliating ingredients such as AHAs or BHA.
