How to Find the Best Skincare for Men
A man’s skin—just like anyone’s—deserves daily care. A few simple steps will keep his skin looking healthy and attractive as the years go by.
Healthy skin is about more than just appearance—though who doesn’t enjoy the greater confidence that comes with clear, younger-looking skin? Beyond that, though, a basic routine with well-formulated, fragrance-free products can offer a great shave, fewer ingrown hairs, and a reduction in bumps and blotches as well as oily, dry, or flaky areas.
Most important, maintaining smoother and more even-textured skin doesn’t need to take tons of time and effort.
The Right Men’s Skincare Products
Unfortunately, most skincare products marketed to men contain sensitizing, drying ingredients like menthol and denatured alcohol, as well as skin-aggravating fragrances like peppermint, witch hazel, and eucalyptus. Despite research proving that fragrance, whether synthetic or naturally derived, is harmful to skin, most men’s skincare products contain them. Paula’s Choice Skincare is one of very few brands that offer gentle, highly effective, carefully formulated men’s products.
A Smarter Shave
Any discussion of men’s skincare should include advice on how to get the best shave. It’s the element most specific to men’s skincare—the rest is just good, solid advice across the board. So, for a faster, smoother shave:
- Shave at the end of, or immediately following your shower.
- Wash your face before shaving to help soften the hairs.
- Avoid very hot water; it can cause redness and that dry, tight feeling.
- With a clean razor, shave in the direction of your hair growth, using short strokes.
- If you need to shave in the opposite direction of your hair growth (on your neck, for example), do so slowly and gently.
- Rinse your razor often, and replace the blade every few shaves.
- Run your hands over your face and neck to ensure you haven't missed any areas.
- Finish by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen, even if you’ll be indoors most of the day.
Beyond the Shave: a Basic Men’s Skincare Routine
Step 1: Wash your face morning and night with PC4MEN Face Wash; it’ll leave your skin fresh and clean—not tight or dry. Cleaning excess oil and surface gunk allows for a closer, smoother shave, and helps your other products work more effectively.
Step 2: Shave with a thin layer of fragrance-free PC4MEN Shave for a close, ultra-smooth shave that leaves skin looking refreshed, not raw and aggravated. Its cream formula helps shield skin from razor-related problems and post-shave redness, and it’s gentle enough to use on sensitive skin—even for those prone to rosacea.
Step 3: Apply PC4MEN Soothe & Smooth with a cotton pad or clean fingers. Think of this as a soothing aftershave with extra skin-transforming benefits. Because it contains BHA (a gentle, leave-on exfoliant), it not only leaves your skin smooth—without abrasion or dryness—but also clears clogged pores, diminishes the look of wrinkles, improves skin texture and tone, hydrates, and calms redness. You can also use Soothe & Smooth on your face and neck at night, for results you’ll notice the next morning; it’s not just for after shaving.
Step 4, AM: Apply PC4MEN Daytime Protect SPF 30 every day, year-round. We know many men don’t like the feel of sunscreens, which is why we formulated this one to feel weightless and not look shiny. We think you’ll be surprised at how light it feels, which means you’ll look forward to using it—and that’s the goal. Sunscreen is a game-changing step to reduce visible signs of aging and the risk of skin cancer, when used as directed with other sun protection measures.
Step 4, PM: Instead of your SPF moisturizer, apply PC4MEN Nighttime Repair after cleansing and exfoliating with PC4Men Soothe & Smooth. It’s a lightweight moisturizer that stops dry skin in its tracks—including around the eyes—while powerhouse ingredients like retinol and antioxidants strengthen skin’s defenses against environmental stressors.
These four steps are all you need to get started—and all you’ll need to see and feel a difference in your skin’s appearance. Eventually, you may want to add more products to this basic routine, but to begin, what’s most important is to develop and maintain a daily skincare habit.
Last, as a final note: Most men’s skincare lines offer face scrubs, but these types of products are not as gentle as BHA exfoliants—nor do they offer any skin-transforming benefits. Worse yet, harsh scrubs can cause micro-tears, which damage skin rather than improve it. As a rule: Avoid abrasive scrubs and stick with a gentle, leave-on exfoliant.
